We are total newbies making our first trip in Feb. I am already reading and planning because I really want to make this trip special for my wife and especially our kids, since I never got to experience it has a kid, I told my wife I wanted this to be the trip of a lifetime for them. So during all my studies I see all the acronyms and have slowly began to figure some out but I see terms like "Rope drop" insread of the fast pass. I don't know what rope drop is....and acronyms like BOD, HHSM and tons of others is there anywhere to help me decipher all of these !!!!!! :crazy2:

Rope drop basically means park opening. they literally have a rope there that the walk backwards through the park so when the gates open you don't get the local track team outrunning everyone to the rides. search for magic kingdom rope drop on youtube to see what it looks like.

BOD I'll assume is BOG (which isn't on the list) Be Our Guest Restaurant.
I can't place HHSM tho. - Unless it was about High School Musical

Yes, check out the link above for commonly used abbreviations! And it will be helpful for you to look at the "Welcome to the DIS" forums, which are especially targeted to newbies: http://www.disboards.com/forums/welcome-to-the-dis.83/. Check out the "sticky" threads at the top of the page for tons of great info.

Regarding your question about "rope drop", that means the time of official park opening. Years ago, the Disney cast members (Disney employees are called cast members or CMs) started to literally hold a rope to keep people from running into the park and trampling each other on their way to the most popular rides. They do a version of a rope drop today, too, to help control crowds. So when people say "rope drop," they mean getting to a park prior to opening.

FYI, if you really want to get lots of things done with lower crowds, getting to the parks at least 30 or 40 minutes prior to the official opening time is a great strategy, so you can be toward the front of the line when the parks open. Be aware that sometimes the parks sometimes actually open anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes before the official opening time, so getting there 30 or 45 minutes early gives you a good jump on the crowds. Lots of people aren't willing to get up early on vacation so the lines are very short first thing in the morning!

Good luck planning your trip - have a great time!

When I first started lurking here in 2009 researching my 2010 trip, I was so confused. I went to the above link and printed it off. I kept it next to my computer. As new abbreviations were added as new events, attractions or restaurants opened, I added to it. I knew that it helped when an OP (original poster) would first spell out the abreviation in question then use the abbreviation in the rest of the post. When answering questions, I like to look at the post count and join date to determine whether or not to spell out or abbreviate something. I still don't understand some newer ones with which I am unfamiliar. It never hurts to ask. If you do, at least three people will give you an answer within minutes. Welcome Rob.:disrocks:

I often wonder if the over use of acronyms on these boards create an insider-type of atmosphere here. I've been around for a number of years and at least half of those acronyms used still takes me time to figure out what these 2-4 random letters refer to. And it's not unusual that some I cannot figure out at all. I can't imagine being new to Disney World (WDW) and these forums and have to navigate through all of this; it can be very off-putting. It is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, even though I know it's not anyones intention to be unwelcoming to new people. You guys are awesome anyways!

I wish people would spell out the word the first time they use it, and then go to acronyms. But I'm going to disney world in six months so I'm good either way!:yay:

Welcome and sorry! You get used to it after awhile. I remember being confused at some like BTMR (Big Thinder Mountain Railroad). I think abbreviations are easier than typing it out (once) when using the hunt-and-peck mobile devices vs. normal keyboards.

There is definitely a learning curve but you will get it in no time!

Internally debating on whether to add a link to the MILF thread here.
Just for anyone wondering, on this family-oriented, Disney vacation planning website; the acronym MILF stands for Monster's Inc. Laugh Floor - the Attraction in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom Park.

I agree with this. While new to these boards, I am very knowledgeable about Disney, particularly Walt Disney World, and I often have to stop and think about what an abbreviation means. From context I can usually figure out what something means, but sometimes it takes a while. And it doesn't help that for things that have had a name change, I tend to know the old name better than the current one (for example, Peoplemover vs. Tomorrowland Transit Authority). Heck, I still call the park with Tower of Terror MGM.

The link above is very helpful, though not all inclusive. Thanks to the person who explained what MILF means in the context of this board. I saw that for the first time last week and could not figure out what on earth that referred to!

I feel your pain! Our situations are similar in that I am also planning a trip for my wife and kids and I am educating myself with the hope that it is the best experience possible. The link provided above is very helpful. But I find the best way to learn the lingo is to just keep checking out different threads on here. There is no substitute for time invested here. Your trip isn't until Feb. so that leaves plenty of time even before your 180 day mark gets here. (Im sure you know that 180 days from your arrival date is an important day with regard to your ADRs (Advanced Dining Reservations).

For What it's worth (FWIW) many theme park websites use the same abbreviations. It is common to use acronyms to save typing.

Thanks for all the help this is exactly what I was looking for, an most of these examples that were provided have really helped out a lot. So many of these conversations already make a lot more sense now..lol...The company i work for already has a dictionary of acronyms that they use so I am trying to learn and distinguish now so it kind of feels like double duty

I have lurked here for 8 years and been posting for 2 or 3 and only recently saw that one! There was a hilarious post entitled "MILF jokes" that really was about the Monsters Inc attraction, yet most people in the thread had some pretty funny comment about what they *thought* the thread would be about:rolleyes:

An Rob :welcome: I hope you find the DIS as immensely helpful as I did! (Though, if you start to get overwhelmed, step away s-l-o-w-l-y! It's easy to tip the scales from knowledgeable traveler to neurotic planner and stress yourself out!)

The MILF is pretty funny, but my personal favorite is the acronym for All Star Sports. :teeth:

Wait till you type out some of the new places.. First they have in the gutter names to begin with and then with acronyms and it's a whole new way to make all the boys here laugh a lot...
