So Cal Driving Advice needed

If I am reading the comments correctly this is what I gather:

Westbound
AM rush hour, use 60 west as 91 west is congested.
PM rush hour, use 91 west rather than 60 west.

Eastbound
AM rush hour, use 91 east
PM rush hour, use 60 east

This sound correct or did I miss something?

The best we have ever done was in summer time - good roads and lotsa daylight - in 16 hours. And that was pushing hard on my poor, poor children and even poorer wife. And I am a crazy fast driver across Utah on I-70 but more cautious on I-15.

As kids have gotten older we still push but usually not so hard. The last few trips have been 17-17.5 hours door-to-door. About 1020 miles for us to my folks in Riverside.

How many miles is your mapping telling you?

Google maps is telling me 1010 miles, so almost exactly the same!! i driven to Vegas many times and google maps tells me this is 11hrs 51 mins and we do it in 11hrs even, so I am hoping for 15. But it is just me and my husband, no kids this trip, and I am the more crazy, hurry up person of the 2 of us. He drinks a lot of coffe, and I even told him that he has to bring a bottle with him in the car I don't really mean it, but you get my point!

I think we were having a debate about it because people were misunderstanding and think "91 is always bad". It is not. You overgeneralized with the above.

Someone mapped it last year and the difference was like 5 miles. The traffic flow is to the west in the morning on both 60 and 91, and to the east in the evening both 60 and 91.

60 handles traffic better which is not to say it handles it well. Just better than 91. Usually. If you pray hard and present appropriate offerings to the traffic gods.

So anytime you are going with traffic 60 would be a better choice. Against traffic they both work but 91 is a straighter shot and a little more scenic and a little shorter.

If any SoCal locals think I am off here then please chime in.

Huff, I guess we need some clarification. I heard just use 60 west anytime cuz they have an carpool lane and so does 57.

Ahh, nevermind. We got clarification before I even posted.

Thanks Hydroguy, that's pretty much what I got out of discussions. We will make the appropriate sacrifices before leaving home (and maybe on the way)

I will reiterate my advice from above since HydroGuy had questions about it.

As a local who spends quite a bit of time on the So. Cal. freeways, if given the choice to take the 60 or the 91, we will always choose the 60 over the 91 regardless of time of day or direction.

The 91 can be congested much moreso than the 60, going either way, anytime of day. It's the way the way it is.

Again, my local advice, stay off the 91 if/when given a choice.

Yes, this! The 91 is not ALWAYS terrible, but usually it's the freeway to avoid.

Westbound: 6am - 9:00/10:00am; 4:30pm - 6:30pm
Eastbound: 7:30am - 9:00am, 3:30pm - 6:30pm

(using Corona - Anaheim as reference points direction-wise)
