So about this Hurricane - 10/7 Dream cancelled, 10/7 Magic Canadian, 10/8 now 10/9 Fantasy 6-night

Why do the travel agents have to call Disney on the phone to rebook??? Is Disney's computer system that antiquated? Do they have people at a central office doing everything with pen and paper?

For how many days extra is a ship provisioned? Has anyone been on a cruise that spent extra days beyond your normal itinerary? Just curious how they handle Navigators, dining rotation, menu, etc.

When I was on the last med cruise before they crossed back, the boss of the restaurant (whatever is his title) told us that the ships have to carry twice the amount of food they need, just in case. So on our sailing (7 nights), they had to have 14 days worth of food. Though in our case, the ship had 3 weeks of food on board because they had begun preparing for the transatlantic which they needed four weeks of food

A couple wonderings.

- people who are on the cancelled Friday Dream and are spending a few pre-days at WDW will need to extend lodging stays until their Monday flight (this is a typical scenario). That could be tricky, but might be balanced by people staying and people cancelling.

- also, for many people on next Monday's Dream, or even this Saturday's Fantasy, they will be flying in early even for an overnight or a couple days at WDW. But will their flights even be departing? What do you do if your flight is cancelled but the cruise isn't?

- the poster on the Dream said they were anticipating a late Saturday arrival in PC. I assume this is to allow the Fantasy to leave first.

they're predicting matthew will increase to a category 4 before hitting florida...
if that happens, it doesn't seem likely that PC will be ready for ships on saturday...
or maybe they're really good at cleaning up a big mess fast?

Thank you! I think I am going to go with my daughter even if my husband decides to stay home!
Wow, I'm sorry your husband isn't interested in the cruise. I hope he changes his mind and has a great time. There are many reasons I enjoy DCL cruises. I work in the transportation industry and I love watching the operations of the ship. Entering and leaving the ports are my favorite parts. That I would be interested in the operations of the ship never occured to me before I took my first cruise. Perhaps there is some aspect of the ship operations that would interest your husband.

DD and her husband were on the magic in the med last month...
she said the ship itself was so much fun, she didn't even get off the ship at most of the ports...
so i would think that cruising north, while you won't get CC or WDW, you'll still get the ship, and that's the main reason we cruise disney to begin with :)

Hi - greetings from the UK! I'm new to the board but due to sail on the Dream on 17th Oct.

Firstly I'm so sorry to those of you affected by the 10/7 cancellation.

Are there any other friendly faces due to be on the 10/17 sailing? I'm praying that everything will be settled down by then. I'm not too fussed by port changes, just grateful for a safe holiday!

Anyway, please do give me a wave. And thanks again to the forum for so much helpful information.

hi! there are definitely people from your cruise on this thread, and in addition, here's a cruise-meet thread for your cruise at this link:

If it is that bad, they will move ports...Fort Lauderdale/Miami.

Thanks for the link disneyholicfamily! Shall post there too for more date-related discussions but also keep an eye here for any weather/sailing updates. Predictions of a hurricane loop-back sound worrying, but as a Brit my knowledge on these things is fairly useless!

even the experts don't know what's going to happen.....are you already in the states?

Orlando airport is closing today (I think I heard noon), so there's going to be massive inbound cancellations at the Disney resorts, so I don't think its going to be too difficult for those there to extend their stays.

Under normal circumstances, if your flight is canceled or badly delayed and the cruise isn't, its your problem to get there. That's why its normally strongly suggested to fly in at least the day prior. However, it looks like Disney is pretty flexible about offering refunds for scheduled cruises this week(end), so I think they'll stay that way until flight schedules stabilize somewhat at MCO.

No, we're not due to arrive in the States until 16th Oct (day before sail date). We're then spending two weeks in WDW afterwards.

Hopefully the storm itself should have moved on or died down offshore by that point, but I can't help but feel sorry for the people and damage left in its wake.

I did a Canada cruise (NCL) a few years back and it was wonderful! Peggy's Cove is idyllic, Halifax is very interesting with some very cool history - the Miqmaq curse and (might be in poor taste, but there were cemeteries with graves from the Titanic), St. John's is gorgeous, AND it's peak leaf season! I would kill to be on the Magic for that!! If he likes history, there is TONS to learn - and if it's just you girls, you'll have so much fun - I never wanted to leave Peggy's Cove.

Updates:
  • Just called DCL customer service and they were unable to help with upgrades because I booked using my DVC points, sigh, so now I have to call DVC member services at 9:00.
  • At this time Canadian port adventures can only be booked on ship at their desk on deck 3. So that is where I will be running to as soon as we board.
  • My husband decided that he will go with us on the cruise, which is nice since our 11th anniversary is on 10/9 and we have a dinner reservation scheduled for Palo that night.
Question:
  • Has anyone taken a cruise with this Canadian itinerary in October? Just curious if the pools will be open and/or if it will be too cold for my 8 year old daughter to swim (trying to figure out if I still need to pack bathing suits - of course I can always buy them on board if needed )
Thanks!

Thank you so much! This is excellent advice

Where are you from? That makes all the difference in the world. I'm originally from Buffalo, and yes, I swam in the pool in the day. The hot tubs were AWESOME in the slight chill of the evening. If you're from the deep south though, bring a parka :rotfl2:

Congrats on the anniversary, and I'm so glad he's going to go!!! You will have a great time!

As long as there is no fog, or storms, the pools should be open! (Fog closed the Goofy Pool on the Wonder as the fog horn is blowing right there, so it's too loud to use the pool.) The pools are heated to keep the water temp at least 75F. I went into the Goofy pool on the Wonder in Alaska with DD12. Water was really warm, like a bathtub. I knew it would feel really cold getting out, so I had us go straight into a hot tub, spent 15 minutes in there, and then felt fine when we got out as our bodies were overheated.

I can only report what the crew has told me. They knew it was going to be really bad. They were warned. On our Iceland cruise the captain told us exactly when it was going to get bad and exactly when it was going to end, and he was exactly right. They know when it's less then 24 hours or so. They have really good radar systems on the ships. They wanted to get back to port for the next cruise. It may have ended up being worse then they expected, same goes for Anthem. I'm sure RCCL is being a lot more careful with storms, and it seems DCL is doing the same.

After seeing the Sandy videos, seeing the other cruise ships wait it out while Fantasy passengers were scared, and this time seeing Disney insist all was on schedule even after PC was closed, our decision to not book DCL any more during hurricane season has been confirmed. Disney certainly considers the safety of the passengers, but looks like the comfort of the passengers is second fiddle to getting back to port on time so they can turn around the ship (see Sandy). I'm glad the closing of PC forced them to do the right thing this time, and I believe everyone on the ships now will have a reasonably calm cruise.

I hope all those on the Dream enjoy their bonus day!
