snow tubing ?

We are planning to take our kids snow tubing for the first time this weekend. My question is do you think my five year old is too young to have her own tube, or do you think she needs to ride with my husband or myself. My other kids are seven and ten so they should be ok on their own.


My other question is would you buy the half day tickets or the full day tickets for this. I don't know how long the kids will last in this cold weather or if they will get tired of it. So what would you do

It depends on the facility. Some places have height requirements because they only have single rider tubes. But We took our daughter when she was 5 or 6 and she was ok on her own. But if they have a web site, you might want to check or call them to see if there are any height / age requirements.

As for your second question, it also depends on the facility. Some tube places have the lift where you sit in the tube while you get pulled up, other's have you stand on an escalator of sorts. I found that if you're able to sit in the tube on the way up, its not so bad, but its the type of lift requiring you to stand, it can wear you down.

I can tell you from my own personal experience including last week, that even at ages 40+ and 11, we've only ever done half days, especially if its super cold out, and that's been plenty.

I have only seen single rider tubes. Sometimes where we go, they will let parents hold on to their kids tube in a 'train". But if the runs are too fast, then they do not let anyone train. And do check height requirements. I just checked ours and it is 42". During weekends, they only have 2 hour tickets, and that has been plenty long enough for us. I can't imagine being out there all day.

I would only do half day. And your 5 year old might not meet height/age requirements for the place, so do check those.

Our local ski place sells passes in 3 hour increments - that's always been more than enough time for us.

And I think most places are single tube only, but no height requirement. Most families I've seen with smaller children will get their kids situated in the tube, then hook their tube onto the kids tubes before going down the hill. At our local place, there's varying heights (and speeds) of hills, so there's enough variety to keep all ages interested.

The three places that we have taken our kids sells tickets in 2 or 4 hour increments. That's plenty of time.

where we are going has three passes, two hours , four hours or five. We are going to Windham mountain but the info on their site is not very good they have no prices or how tall you have to be. I am going to stop on my way home from work tomorrow and check it out. Has anyone here ever done snow tubing at Windham
