My wife and I are both teachers. We have 2 boys (2 1/2 & 11 months) with baby #3 due 1st week in July. Ever since I have been a teacher, I thought it would be great to pick up and go to Florida on a snow day. All week long our local weathermen were going crazy about the possible snow we would be getting. On Wed. night I was talking to a teacher friend about a repeat trip to Mammoth Cave for some more mountain bike riding in the snow. He couldn't go. Well, that got me pondering some possibilities.
I asked my wife if she wanted to go to DW if we got out of school the next day if the snow did indeed hit. She, of course, thought I was ludicrous! But, I had good reasons. We took son #1 when he was 13 months old, so it would only be justified to take son#2 to DW before baby #3 arrives. Well, she bit.
The next day I woke up bright and early and checked outside for the presence of Mother Nature. Much to my chagrin, NOTHING!! So I went to get in the shower. As I'm getting in, my wife pops in to say we are out of school even though it hasn't snowed. We were very puzzeled. We decided to go ahead and pack.
At this point we were still worried that we would be in school the next day, Friday. That worry didn't last long because at 10 am the snow started and it came down in sheets. We decided to go!!!!
Previous to the final decision to go, my wife had called her sister to see if she would be interested in going with us? Good idea? NO! Not because of a bad SIL but b/c she couldn't get off work until 5 pm. So here we all sat waiting for 5 pm to arrive while the snow is rapidly accumulating on the ground and roads. After an hour (See, I am a patient man
), we called her back to see if there was any way she could leave earlier. By 2 pm we were on the road.
As we hit the interstate, it was smooth sailing. Then we left KY and crossed into TN were we promptly stopped and did not move an inch for 3 hours!!!! Both of our parents called us 3 times each to convince us to come back home. (That was a little annoying.) I took a nap at the wheel for 30 minutes; never thought I would do that and live. Finally we were able to get to an exit. I refilled the gas tank just in case, I still had 4/5 ths of a tank. By using my GPS, I had Nashville downloaded into it, we used the highways.
The amazing thing was that all of these highways were salted and clear and barely any traffic at all. Everyone was at a standstill on the interstate but nobody would get off. We checked out the interdate the south side of Nashville and it was clear as can be.
My goal for the trip was to make it to Macon, GA. When we got to Macon, everyone except myself was asleep. The last time we stopped in the middle of the night my oldest son woke up and played for 4 hours. So we kept on going.
When I started to get tired my wife was ready to drive so we switched. When she started to get tired I was ready to drive again. We did one more of those switches before arriving at the Ticket and Transportation Center at opening. We got out of the minivan. The boys had been in their carseats for the last 17 out of 18 hours. Thanks goodness they sleep well!! We brushed our teeth and had a wonderful day at MK.
I got reservations while at MK for AS-Sports. On Sat we did MGM. Both boys loved Disney's Playhouse. Sunday we did AK in the morning, Epcot the rest of the day. We drove back on Monday.
A couple of notes:
The next week, we got snow again and again we were out on Thursday & Friday. We received many calls to find out were we would be venturing this snowstorm?
We didn't go anywhere b/c we needed these days to recoup from the WD trip!!!!
When we called my parents before we left town and told them of our plans, they called back 10 minutes later and said to come by and pick up a $100 check to spend on the boys. Are we spoiled or what?
This is my first post ever on the DIS, so I hope I did things right. We will be DVC members before the month is over unless something unexpected happens.
