Snow Days to Change Last Day of School!

Taking days from Spring Break to makeup lost school days may help the OP, but what about all those parents that have vacation plans over Spring Break? I bet they won't be pleased.

True enough, but most of the time missing days in mid-April doesn't mean missing final exams. Also, there is that whole "bumping into summer camp" issue that someone else mentioned. Most of the time it is still going to be preferable to make up the days before the end of the year if possible.

I think that most schools will usually try to accomodate non-refundable travel plans that were made in good faith based on a published schedule, either by excusing the student or allowing alternate done-in-advance assignments.

Ok, now that I've already purchased five flights for the end of June, I'm now worried about whether the kids will even be done with school since they will have so many snow days to make up. Our school district started school in August before Labor Day, and the last day of school was originally supposed to be June 13th. I've already booked flights for June 25th, returning on June 30th. Our projected last day of school is now at June 21st I believe, possibly even June 22nd. Pulling them out of school the last few days is not an option because they are in high school and have exams up to the last day of school.

Not only will this affect my reservation at Bay Lake Towers (probably won't be able to get a 2 bdrm unit if I need to change the dates), I will incur change fees if I need to change the flight days! I'm hoping they will start taking days away from the Feb. and April school breaks! Any school districts doing this - taking away the school break weeks so the kids don't have too many days to make up in June?

Enough already with this SNOW!

I just had this come up today...our trip is to Washington D.C. and our last day was to be the Friday before Memorial Day. Well last week I sent off the non-refundable deposit and contract for a VRBO in Virginia. Then see the prediction of snow in mid-west late week. So ....today we hit the final day we can miss before our vacation will be in jeopardy. One more day and we will be over the 'padding' I gave us. So this morning when we were canceled I immediately sent the principal, superintendent (we are a small school system with one high school, one junior high and one elementary) and the assistant principals. I carefully explained what had happened and what would happen if we missed one day. They had said NO EARLY FINALS! Within 20 minutes I had a response from the principal and she said my boys (8th grade and 10th grade) could take the finals early if we missed any more days. I think since I sent it out right away when I realized any more days missed spelled trouble. I also carefully explained I would lose my deposit and would lose $1100 also. I think notifying early is the key---I think if people wait until a couple weeks before it looks like it was last minute...this way they know it was planned, that we had allowed for several extra days and mother nature decided not to be nice.

Now I am seeing the forecast for next week....3-5 more inches!

GOOD LUCK!!!!

I just emailed our superintendant. I was looking at June 8-14 and we are up to June 2 he says (I had it figured at June 1 and so does the online calendar, but anyway). We have had 3 snow days and he told me that days 4 and 5 would come from spring break. So he thought we were pretty safe at June 8.

Last year we had 9 snow days and I know we took some out of spring break and a teacher inservice. Mainly because a school band trip was leaving for NYC on June 3, so they really wanted to be done by then. Our babysitter's school lengthened their school days to get their days in sooner.

Good luck to anyone betting against the school calendar! :)

I also have our Disney trip planned for the 1st week out of school. It is not my first choice but I thought I could make it work best and also work around 3 kids camp/school stuff/ college schedules/work schedules. I may be doing some quick re-planning if we get 1 more snow day as we used our last one on Wednesday! Crazy weather!

Oh my high schoolers take finials the last day of school. Report cards are mailed.
