no school busses running in Wellington county and all schools in Halton are closed. I thought we were only supposed to get 15cm of snow.... either Halton doesn't know we live in CANADA or it's going to be really bad!! I'm betting the snow day is b/c they didn't meet their quota of snow days in Jan :rotfl2: :rotfl:

Stay safe if you have to drive anywhere today!!

Yea, I was surprised to hear that Halton closed the schools. All ours are open, just no buses running.

We're getting 15cm and the schools and buses are running.I'm keeping the kids home today.

My DD 10 has a PD day today and DD 14 has a day off from High School exams.

But like most days when it snows in Mississauga the buses are canceled and the schools are open.

We live in Halton and it seems odd that the schools are closed. According to a teacher friend of mine, it costs more to close the school then to keep it open.

We are in Halton too, this is the first time in 9 years that my kids have gone to school that the school has been closed. Usually, they cancel the buses, but leave the schools open.
BTW, my DH said to me this morning "No, our kids are in Hamilton-Wentworth, Oakville is Halton!!" :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

(we had a small arguement over THAT one)...thought I'd share :lmao: :lmao:

we're getting some pretty good snow here in Barrie...suprizingly we haven't had any snow days yet!

I, too, was very surprised when the Before School program turned us away at the door this morning at around 7:00. They usually keep the kids on PA days, but I guess they weren't prepared today. It was barely even snowing at that point. It's coming down pretty good in Oakville right now, tho.

It didn't even occur to me to take my DD to work with me (which I've done before)! I was just too excited about taking the day off! :thumbsup2

We're in Halton and I was really surprised to get the Schools Closed phone call this morning. At that time it was hardly snowing at all. Now, It's been going steady all day.

We live in Halton as well and I was very surprised that schools were closed - I didn't think it was that bad at 7 a.m. My two 14 year olds were delighted of course (math homework not finished last night!) but I still had to drive my 19 year old to her college daycare placement. I figured no problem - boy was I wrong. It was bad enough getting her there, but I picked her up around 1:00 and had the worst winter driving experience of my life. I grew up here but only moved back in 07 after 25 years in Peel and I forgot what a pain hills can be when the plows haven't been around yet. I need to remember that Georgetown is in Halton HILLS and you can't get up an icy hill when you're puttering along at 40 kms! Much tea and chocolate was consumed when we finally made it home!

I still can't used to hearing about the buses not going, but schools are open. Here, they just close the schools. If the buses don't go, there is no school. I guess that's because probably at least 90% of students at all the Island schools take the bus. Last year I had 23 students, and all 23 of them took the bus to school.

No snow day here in Essex County. Day off for most of the high school kids anyway as it is the day before the new semester begins.

The buses were cancelled in Dufferin. DS was very disappointed because they were supposed to go cross-country skiing today.

It's the cost that keeps the schools open. If I understand it correctly, when the school board decides to close the school, they loose their funding for that day from the Ministry of Education. Also, parents who must work (nurses, firefighters etc) still need somewhere to take their kids. It's not perfect and if I could stay home with my child, I would.

I know all too well.

Here in NE Alberta we have that along with a thing where "schools are closed but teachers are expected to report"! :sad2:

I think it must almost kill those tightwad school board members to give a teacher a day off. Clearly, they don't care if a teacher is hurt or killed on dangerous winter roads that are too dangerous for the kids.:crazy2:

Rant over, I feel better.
