If you're asking which port of call has the better snorkeling, then I'd say St Thomas/St John. As for which excursion to do... skip the excursions and go on your own to Cinnamon Bay on St John (this would involve a taxi, ferry, and taxi). Or for a more accessible beach (only one taxi and no ferry), go to Coki Beach on St Thomas.

We just got back from the Eastern...You can read our trip reports on the trip report page...the people at our table went to St. John on St. Thomas on the DCL excursion and said it was great, but it does take time to get there and you don't get much snorkel time...they were done and back on the ship by noon. It does have great reviews though. I would definitely do it on my own...lots of people did...it so much cheaper, plus, you can stay all day. We decided to go to Coki Beach instead...it is wonderful...10min. cab ride & $7 each way for us. The beach is great...on a reef, so great snorkeling to the Right, near the rocks...pretty good to the left near the rocks too. There were lots of DCL and Carnival people there. It was gorgeous...chairs, umbrellas, restaurants, drinks available. No waves, smooth water, clear blue. Either way you won't go wrong with the snorkeling. You can read my review of the snorkeling on St. Martin on the trip review page. Have a great time...we're ready to book the Western.

if you are looking for a dcl excursion, I would recommend the st. christopher shipwrek cataman sail and snorkel (hope i am naming this correctly). You take a forty five minute or so ride out to buck island, and then you jump over the side. There is an old shipwreck, and then there are tons of fish. I was impressed, and that is hard to do, because i love to snorkel, and have been to lots of different places.

regardless of where you go, enjoy!!!
