Just went to take out the trash, and there was a black earthworm on the sidewalk. That didn't bug me until I got closer to it and saw that it was acting more like a snake - picked its head up and pulled back it back when it heard me coming. Sorry - but snakes totally freak me out! Big problem living in Florida, I know. Anyway, it was black with a little red ring around it's neck. When I poked at it with a stick, it flipped over and was brown on its underside. Let's just say that he's dead and gone (sorry), but what kind was it? With it being so little, just wonder if Momma is close by and what kind she is.

You are much braver then I am. I would been into the house like a shot. I am deathly afraid of snakes.

Oh, no I'm not!! Terrified of them!! That's why he's dead now - couldn't stand the thought of him growing bigger in my yard! That shovel in the garage has a really long handle, so I didn't have to get too close.

I know how many people are afraid of snakes... but I have to tell you I cringed after I saw that picture of the baby snake and knew that the OP had "taken care" of hers. I grew up in Middlebug (just south of Jacksonville) it's a very rural area and I got used to having snakes around quite a bit. Even had a few as pets over the years.

He was about the size of the one in the pictures in that link that is in someone's hand. Sorry! :guilty:

We've seen a lot of snakes since moving to Florida. We have a lot of Black Racers in our yard.

One hissed at DH once and raised up (the thing you mentioned.) I think it was the kind with the ring around it's neck.

I'm always afraid I'm going to find one in my car. You should see the way these things climb. YUCK!

When we first moved to Maryland we lived in an apartment for a couple months before moving into our house. One day I looked out onto our patio and there was a huge, black snake on the patio. I called the rental office and asked them what kind of snack it was and they told me that it was a black rat snake and told me that it was harmless. They asked me (begged me?) to leave it along until they could move it and I told them that I was fine with it as long as it was harmless.

I actually like snakes as long as I know they are not going to kill me! It came from having brothers who would go catch snakes and bring them home to scare me (and my friends). I learned to not react and grew to like them.

I've got a few pictures of snakes that have been in our yard.

Does anyone know how to post a photo? I have them in my iphoto and tried to post them but it didn't work.

omg, I am totally cringing. Yuck snakes. Spooky!
