when we were little we always had a bread bag full of pre-made sandwiches for the ride down to florida.

now, our favorite/tradition of things to have on hand are: cheese, sausage and crackers. vegies and dip. the normal chips. sandwiches we make as we go.
what do you take or make for your travel?

we4mickey needs to share what they bring. it is a must on all our trips down with them. if we don't travel with them they will call to say "guess what we are having?". just to rub it in..;)

Wow....our take along while we drive snacks are the same! One other thing I do since I've already cubed cheese and salami for snacking is to use half of it for Italian pasta (cheese, salami, onion, gr. pepper, carrots, pasta and a bottle of lite italian dressing) Put this in the RV fridge and it stays fresh for several days and makes a great snack or side dish for those campsite burgers!

We always have homemade chicken salad on hand so that when we stop for lunch we can make sandwiches. Otherwise we have individual snack bags of chips, crackers, and cookies.

Well since we haven't driven to FW yet, I can tell you what I was planning to do (before this thread was started). I was planning to make sandwiches before we leave home. I was going to leave off the condiments so they don't get mushy, wrap individually, and put in the refrigerator. This is a great thread and perfect timing for our upcoming drive. :thumbsup2

Three things I have to add are: spray cheese & crackers (it doesn't slide off!); oranges, but already peeled and sectioned in put in individual baggies in the cooler; and hard boiled eggs - already peeled and put in a ziplock so as to be "grab & go". Must-have's for any of our long car rides!

We clean out the cupboards...all cereal, small crakers, pretzels and peanuts go into a large plastic jar along with raisins and M & M's. It is easy to pass in truck and there is something for everyone. We also take tootsie pops and play the "see who can be the last to get to the tootsie pop center game". This offers a much needed quiet time during the long drive and it still works even though they are 13 and 16.

graciejane, I love that idea for a nice quiet tootsie pop game!

*A huge $5 bag of Wal-mart trail mix (the ones with the M&M's in them) are always a favorite.
*Fruit like apples that don't need any cutting or other prep.
*We sometimes bring the stuff to make sandwiches but don't actually make them beforehand - I can imagine this might change once we have little ones in the back seat that are suddenly hungry right now and start to whine! :)
*Crackers like Triscuits or Wheat Thins
*This isn't a food (and I hope I'm not hijacking here), but we've found that an audiobook makes a huge difference in our perception of how quickly time passes on the road. It's a snack for my mind. :)

Great thread!

i forgot about the hard boiled eggs. those work out really good, too. if there are left over ones you can make eggsalad...

I am always so excited about getting to the Fort that I dont want to stop to eat on the way down. We also usually leave really early, around 4 am. So I make a variety of sandwiches; ham and chees, turkey, roast beef and sometimes tuna. I vary the bread and use some sliced and some small hoagie rolls. Since most of us are sleeping during the first few hours of the trip, by the time everybody wakes up we have the sandwiches, some kind of chips, drinks for the cooler and I always make a big bag of choc chip cookies. That pretty much takes care of us until we get there. The trip is about 9-10 hours for us.

Well, you know a trip to FW just wouldn't be the same without Sour Cream coffee cake. It has become such a habit. How many am I going to have to make for this trip. Let's see four vehicles 2 days on the road and all those appetites! Yikes, I better start baking now. DH would never let me bring hard boiled eggs. Gotta have the cheese and sausage and fresh cut up veggies. DH always has to have something chocolate, hard candy and something salty to satisfy whatever he has the taste for. After all, he does the driving, so we have to keep him happy :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:.

Cheese-its
Pringles
Crackers and cheese
Hard candies
Nuts ( any kind )

We also are the masters of auto-tapes for the road, last time we listened to Robin Cook ( forgot the title ), good story but it was about tanted meat, so we didn't eat much on the way down to WDW

You guys are making me hungry!

We usually have Lay's wavy potato chips, chicken salad to make sandwiches during our rest stops, something chocolate and Pepsi's.

The cubed cheese sounds like a great idea. Will have to try in November on our next trip.

We only have about a 11 hour drive, but with these ideas, I may have to eat all the way next time.:woohoo: :woohoo:
