We checked in to our room at the GF on Sunday after 4 nights at the BWI, we check out tomorrow. We have a ground level room in Big Pine Key. Last night after the fireworks, my daughter and I were going to sit out on our patio but there were people smoking right next to our room. This morning a few were smoking early and now a man is smoking a cigar at this "smoking area". TBH, when we checked into our room I did not even notice that this is a "smoking area" or I would of changed rooms immediately. Today we are having a resort day and I find it frustrating that they put a smoking area right outside guests rooms.

That's not good. Take a walk to the front desk and ask for the Mgr. Let the mgr know that you cannot use your patio and how disappointed you are since you paid not only for the room but the sitting area outside. They most likely will try to make it right for you. I'd also write a note when you get home to the GM of the resort and let them know about the smoking area and how it impacted your vacation.

They already called me. Extremely nice GM and she made it right. They would of changed our room but we are checking out tomorrow. I just think they should maybe put the smoking area somewhere else but maybe it would always be near someone's room.

Glad it worked out for you. In the future, when checking in, ask where the smoking area is located and tell them you don't want to be near that area. Saves the hassle.

Yes, I will. TBH, I didn't even realize they had these areas inside the resort areas but in the future I will check. Thanks

Ugh, I didn’t realize the smoking area was there either, and we had 2 stays in Big Pine. Neither stays were on first floor but still..... I think they should put the smoking areas off the beaten path somewhere. I hate having to pass thru smoking areas, I’d really hate if it was right outside my room. Messes with my sinus.

That's terrible. My DD and I both have severe asthma and are triggered by smoke. That would have been a major issue for us. I'm sorry that you had to deal with that on vacation.

OP here. The general manager or who ever called me was extremely nice and did comp me some $$$ but to be honest it really was a detriment being right next to this area, not only were people out there smoking frequently but we always like to keep our curtains open when we are in the room and it felt kind of weird like the people are hanging out smoking and can see right in the room. I know people walking by can see in but it's usually quick and they are just passing by not standing there for an extended period of time. In the future I will definitely make sure we are not right next to this area, there was a lot of people who used this area to smoke. Live and Learn!!! All in all, we loved the GF and will continue to stay there because it's beautiful and has the best feeling of any resort, IMO.

Sounds like Disney should have a new Room Category at GF- "Designated Smoking Area View"!lol:)

Smokers would pay extra to be so close to the DSA-problem solved!:)

Unfortunately, even the smokers do not like having a room near a DSA…

(Yes I understand your post was sarcastic. I got the joke and found it funny!)

Do you mind if I ask why you chose to put smoking area inside quotation marks?

No, we wouldn't. We are fully capable of transporting ourselves to and from a DSA.

OP I have to react. First off, I am a non smoker.
I am sorry this happened to you on your vacation I agree it was unpleasant for you.
BUT by the time you chose to post, you had already been compensated by the GF. What more do you want? I find it very unfair to come to the internet and to start a known to be controversial subject thread like this. JMHO

I am not the OP, but I find threads like this helpful because I would not have previously thought to be concerned about possible placement of designated smoking areas when choosing a room location. I too would be disappointed if my ability to use my balcony or patio was hampered by the the smell of smoke.

As the OP acknowledged:

TBH, I didn't even realize they had these areas inside the resort areas but in the future I will check.

That is why this thread is helpful, in my opinion.

I'm not the OP, but I would have posted the same thing to let others know that there is smoking area near this room area, so others are aware. That way other people can request to be away from that area if need be. The OP wasn't aware of the smoking area initially, so letting others know, who may not know either, is helpful.
