Smoking on the ship?

I'm going on a cruise and I'm bringing.....popcorn, kettle corn, nachos, beer, and an inhaler.... who's next?

DH is allergic as well. Watery eyes, asthmatic, needs an inhaler, etc.

All that said, he's yet to have problems w/the smoke on DCL, after three cruises. The only place he can remember in which the smoke was heavy, was at Rockin' Bar D. We sat as far away from the smoke as we could. However, the smoke seemed minimal in most other areas. The ship was large enough for us to move away to another area if it became problematic. (We can't even remember any incidents, as we've since sailed other cruise lines in which smoking is permitted indoors at casinos and all bars, and that's another story in itself.) I dislike smoke as much as the next person, but have still had a great time on each of our cruises. In fact, DH even said (after we had to find alternate routes to walk on a Carnival ship in which smoking was permitted at the indoor casinos,) DCL's smoke is NOTHING compared to this.

Who knew a simple question would stir the pot so much?! Dr. Cavin - make this one with extra butter! (and let's be sure to sit in the non-smoking section, please) :rotfl:

Personally, I don't think there should be any place people are allowed to smoke in. Those who smoke are not only killing themselves, but the people around them. Second hand smoke and the smoke that comes out of the other end of the cigarette are even more deadly than the stuff a smoker breathes in. I'm sorry, I just don't want to get lung cancer. Two of my grandparents died from lung cancer, and one of them quit something like twenty years ago.

People vacationing on the DCL shouldn't be thinking about that. Heck, I shouldn't be thinking about that. I'm 14! But I hate smoke. Whenever I pass by someone who smokes, I hold my breathe, because not only its dangerous, but it smells disgusting. It'd be a big downer if I had to frequently avoid areas and hold my breath on a vacation.

Sorry about my mini-rant, I just loathe smoking. I assume that all those that are allergic to smoke get the same reacting as me petting a cat. That's not pretty, lol.

That's why I'd much rather live in California than New York. In California, there is no smoking in public places. In New York, its hard to find someone in Times Sqare thats NOT smoking.

I just received an E-Mail from DCL about the smoking policies on board. I wrote yesterday to confirm about the report on this thread about Rock in bar D being smoke free. It is true! Wave bands on one ship and Rock N Bar D on the other as well as the promenade lounge are now non smoking. The sports bar lounge, and cadillac lounge, and one the(can't remember the name) on the other ship that's equal to the cadillac lounge are smoking. So there is something for everyone. If this makes you happy, please let DCL know so they will keep it this way. Just thought you'd like to know this information since it came from DCL itself.

We were on the Wonder July 3rd and spent all our outside time at the Mickey Pool because of smoking at the other pools. I wasn't able to handle being in any of the interior spaces that presently allow or have allowed smoking in the past. The stench and residue is there, it just depends how sensitive you are to it. We were fortunate enough to find a non-smoking group to sit with on CC and didn't have any problems on our veranda. Not being able to enjoy the clubs and programs/entertainment offered in those clubs and around the goofy pool at night was a bummer.

Smoking was much worse in the parks though. Hardly anyone observes the smoking areas there. Smoke was everywhere. :crazy2:

Florida is the same as California (pretty much no indoor smoking in any public place except bars), and believe me, you get used to it fast! I spend a lot of time in both FL and IL, and it's so hard to have to breath the cigarette smoke drifting over from smoking sections in IL when I've been spoiled in the Sunshine State.

We're sailing again in Sept., and it's great to hear that Wavebands is still non-smoking. We spent more time there on our last cruise and plan to do so again. It's so much more enjoyable to attend the parties and shows without having to leave early because my sinuses are rebelling.

Honu,
sorry to hear the odor was still present when you cruised. In October the Magic will go into dry dock for two weeks. During that time they do a major rehaul and clean up of the entire ship. They will be changing carpets, drapes, repainting etc... Hopefully after this is done it will help to get rid of the smell that was left there after it became non smoking. I guess it just depends on the luck of the cruise you are on how many are smoking. Our last few cruises we didnt have any smoke or smell of it around the family pool or the deck in general. We walk 9 and 10 constantly with no problem. Only saw a couple of smokers. Guess we were lucky.
Hope the dry dock makes it better for people who are sensitive to the smell, i know it's hard to get rid of without really stripping the place down and replacing everything, which will happen on the Magic and the Wonder next year. Good Luck,
