Smoking largely banned in UK

MPs have voted by a huge margin to ban smoking from all pubs and private members' clubs in England.
Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt said the change, expected to take effect in summer 2007, would "save thousands of people's lives".

Ministers gave a free vote amid fears Labour MPs could rebel against plans to exempt clubs and pubs not serving food.

The Commons decided by a margin of 200 to impose a ban on smoking in all enclosed public spaces.

I couldn't be happier about this. Nothing like a drug to impede on people's lives after all - especially if the drug is inflicted by a third party seated a table away from you.

I mean, why should others suffer just because of one person's drug addiction?

I'm with the experts. Let's give smoking the boot.

They banned smoking in my state. I voted against it because of my political ideals of freedom...BUT

I sure am loving the smoke free clubs!!! I actually go out MORE now...and don't have to de-stink my coat!

This happened in Canada some years back and at first there was an uproar and now it is the way it is!!! Gone are the days of second hand smoke making your eyes sore and smelling up your clothes! Nobody else can inflict this on another and it works fine!!!!!

I thought the entire UK already did this. I remember thinking pubs=smoking, that's going to be rough for them. Never happened? Oh well, more senility sinking in!

Ireland is pretty much smoke free too.

Tomorrow I will be smoke free for six weeks!! After 45 years of smoking, I'm pretty proud of myself.

That's great! And now maybe France will want to follow suit so that when I make my England/France trip in a year or two, I can breathe. (Not holding my breath on the French giving up smoking!)
