Smoking in the Bathroom

Congrats on quitting! I'm an ex-smoker. It's not easy to quit--don't beat yourself up if you snuck a drag. ;) Everybody at work is doing really well with Chantix, by the way!

I'm sure the housekeepers are not getting any direction from Disney re: smokers. Why should minimum wage workers put themselves at the risk of verbal abuse to enforce a policy that Disney obviously does not care to enforce? I wonder if Disney would reprimand them for saying anything to smokers!

There are MANY things Disney could do to enforce their smoking policies.

1. Remind people at check-in that there is no smoking in any rooms or walkways, and point out smoking areas on the map.

2. Take action (instead of trying to weasel out of their responsibilities) when other guests complain about smoking in non-designated areas.

3. Reward housekeepers for discovering smokers. Iread about a hotel that gives the housekeepers $10 for sniffing out smelly rooms, then fines the client $200.

4. Enforce their policy of fining people for smoking in rooms. I would bet they haven't fined a single person yet.

5. Place sensitive smoke detectors in hotel rooms that would detect smoking. Then ENFORCE the no-smoking policies. ( I know an office building I used to work in had such sensitive smoke detectors that you couldn't so much as light birthday candles.)

Thank You, doing pretty good since then, no slip ups. Eating alot of licorice and gummies though. :worship:

ITA, that Disney should enforce the non-smoking rules. I totally expected someone to come banging on my door even though I lit up and put it out right away. ha ha:rotfl: I'm a BIG rule follower though.

The only thing was though that as a single mom, I really did not feel comfortable leaving DS12 in the room alone while I went for one, so I always dragged him with me, but he sat on the far bench away from me. Needless to say, he was up late with me most nights so I could have my late night smoke.:rolleyes1

If the smell is coming through the vents, how is Disney supposed to know WHICH room the smell is coming from? I would hve thought that the mousekeepers would have told security or management when someone smoked on the balconies or someone but saw people just hanging out, smoking. It was late at night, but that does not matter.

Wow, this worries me now. DDIL and I have Ashma and DS is extremely allergic to tobacco smoke and we plan a trip next year.

Comfort Inn's recently went smoke free and when you register you are required to sign a form stating that you know it is smoke free and that a $500 cleaning fee will be charge to your credit card if you smoke in your room (including bathroom).

I agree that anyone having a medical emergency because Disney does not inforce it's rules should immediately file a law suit.

I would need a new room immediately, even in the middle of the night. Also - room de-odorizer would make it worse, not better, if you have asthma.

When we checked into the WL last August, we did sign something that stated we understood the no smoking policy and that there would be a fine, if a person is caught smoking, in their room, or balcony area. I think the fine was starting at $250.00, though not positive because I didn't pay attention to it, as we are non-smokers. I just signed the form.
Not sure why this is not done at all the Disney hotels as part of the checking in process.

I agree that if Disney is going to make policies, they need to be enforced across the board.

When you check in and sign that piece of paper that no one ever reads at WDW resorts, it states the smoking policy there. I am a smoker (pls don't flame me-pun intended) but I follow the rules at WDW and elsewhere. I am with the op and I think if they wanted a different room, one should have been made available if possible.

Calling the front desk from your phone doesn't send you to your resort's front desk, it sends you to a central operator off site of the resort. I annoys the heck out of me that in order to talk to your actual front desk, you need to walk to the front desk and ask for a manager. Quite often after hours, it does take a while for management to respond. We had a similar problem at SSR a few years ago. I repeatedly called the front desk and demanded that they send someone to our room immediately since I knew the smoke was coming from the studio lockoff adjoining our 1br unit. They finally did since I called over and over again. The smoking stopped, but then started up again the next day, and we continued the process. I'm sure the resort got pretty sick of my pestering them, but if the resort is not going to enforce their own rules, I will help them to.

This was before the resorts went NS, but we had a NS room for medical reasons (DS, DD and I are asthmatic, but DS is extremely asthmatic, and smoke is a major trigger for him.)

Hopefully now, Disney is charging the fines they are supposed to be charging for the offenders.

I'm not a smoker but let's get real.
How the hell can a hotel FINE a person for smoking?
That's outlandish and totally asinine.

Same way they can fine you for stealing towels or trashing the hotel room. It's their property, they can do it. Most hotels are realizing that smoking in their rooms often leads to property damage and increased cleaning costs. Thankfully, the WDW has finally followed the lead and has made all the resorts nonsmoking.
