Smoking ban

Ok so far i seem to be the only smoker on the thread. how will it effect me? Well it will mean i will definately be smoking less, normally its alcohol in one hand and cigarette in the other, and if i don't have to watch my friends smoking around me then it will be much easier to go for longer between. I also think that this may be the push i need to quit.

Basically i think its a very good thing, i have never liked inflicting my smoke on others, and if it means i cut down or stop altogether then great. The pubs and clubs are going to be much more bearable all round, even as a smoker it can be too much sometimes.

We've had the ban here in Wales, too, for a couple of months now, and it's not until I go 'over the border' where the ban isn't yet in force that I realise how much I appreciate the cleaner atmosphere in public places :thumbsup2
same here

It's made such a difference here and not just in the pubs. I can take the kids to a cafe and not have someone at the next table blowing smoke in our direction and going out for a meal is lovely as well.

Have to agree with everyone
it has been the best thing to happen here:thumbsup2

but just be aware the smell of smoke covers up alot of the other smells:scared1:

LOL!

I am pleased that the ban will be here in England, I am worried about having to battle through smokers at doorways though.

Me too but my DD said smokers won't be allowed to congregate too near buildings...

you're not the only one Claire, I'm an on and off smoker too, will it make me stop? probably not to be honest, I go through phases when I smoke a lot then don't touch it for months. Like you I'm not keen on smoking in enclosed spaces and I've never smoked at home, or in any body elses house - even if they've been a heavy smoker.
But, at the end of the day, I enjoy it! I really enjoy a cigarette, I can't see myself stopping because of this.

I saw this thread earlier, but decided to say nothing. I took the easy option.

I agree with what you wrote. Bruce doesnt smoke and I dont smoke in the house or car. I am trying to give up at the moment. Its the alchohol I am not sure how to deal with at the moment. Its only been 6 days, so I cant really say that I have given up.

It might point in the right direction, but I seriously doubt the ban would stop me totally. Unless I wanted to stop anyway.

:woohoo: :woohoo: :yay: WELL HAPPY ! :woohoo: :woohoo:

hate smell of smoke on my clothes and people lighting up DURING meals - yuk

We have had the ban here in Wales for a while, and it's great to pop into a bar for a drink or particularly go out for a meal without any unwanted smoke drifting around. The only downside is that all the smokers now congregate on the outside tables, so sitting outside for a drink on a nice summer's evening is will have to be a thing of the past, unless I am doing it in my own garden!

Just a small point. If you see someone smoking in a pub/Club, and the landlord won't do anything about it, the enforcement comes under the local Council, so contact them.

I am a smoker however I am happy for this ban because although I smoke I understand that not everyone wants to have my smoke around them and I am quite happy to go outside. The only bit that would bother me, and I suppose I will get used to it is at stations and airports. Wish they would provide an outside area - but I managed at MCO so presume I will manage everywhere else.

I think that there should be smoking and non-smoking pubs/clubs then everyone would be satisfied. On a night out everyone could make their own choice where they wanted to go. The smoking pubs/clubs would only employ people who smoked so no-one would be offended. This seems fair to me and I am a non-smoker :thumbsup2

Doesn't really affect me (as I never go out!) but my friend has a pub which has always been non smoking and I think she'll be pleased to get rid of the smoking room she's had to have :)

I really noticed the smoke when I took DD to a show at Butlins and I worried how it would affect her asthma. She was fine but it will be nicer next time we go.

They have some good quit smoking schemes round here with discounted patches and gym memberships if you sign up

Personally I can't wait for the ban, it will be great to be able to go out and not worry about stinking of smoke when you come home. DH and I went to the pub on Wednesday night and it was awful, but TBH I think a lot of people were smoking more in order to get them in before the ban! ha ha

This seems fair to me as well.

I have been out for the last 2 evenings, we have had a no smoking ban here in Wales for some time, I personally think its great, and Im an occasional smoker, however I do have to say, at no time did I have any trouble fighting through hoards of people congregating and smoking in doorways, it just hasnt happened, there were one or two people outside having a quick cigerette but not stood in the doorways, most pubs and clubs have put up ashtrays on the walls right around the buildings and it appears to be working well, pleasent on the inside, and somewhere outside for those who want a quick ciggie. I thought as it was raining there may be people who might stand in the doorways because of this but there were not,the few people that I saw smoking stood well away from the main entrances under their umbrella's. I have a feeling not being able to smoke has actually made people cut down on the amount they would normally smoke when they go out:goodvibes

As an ex-smoker I'm so looking forward to the ban. It'll be nice to go into the pubs again and not come home with tobacco odour.

Don't they have to stand so far away from a door way 10 feet or metres something like that i'm sure thats what i heard.

I imagine with the nature of Pubs we will find a lot of people getting fined today.. :lmao:

Seriously, as a Non-smoker I love this idea now. It also means that (and I shouldn't really be saying this but,) at our school they can have proper enforcements to people who smoke there. Bravo!

I think it is great, also I think it will only work if it is a complete ban rather than choice as we have had non-smoking pubs here before the ban and after a few months they had gone back to smoking as the lots of customers went to smoking pubs instead.

I am so happy about the ban at train stations as I use the train a lot and often had to stand in the rain as the person sat next to me is smoking.

We have been debating this at work a lot lately. We (even the smokers - i dont smoke) think its great, particuarly as many of the smokers i know try almost weekly to give up, do a great job until the weekend rolls around, but then fall into bad old habits after a few drinkies on a Friday night :headache:
