We recently were on vacation at the World a couple of weeks ago and I'm just now getting the chance to post about our experience at the Pop. We absolutely love this resort and this was our 5th stay there. It is cheap, new, has a great food court, and you can see the fireworks from the 50's, which is where we always stay.

Well, this was our first stay since they enforced the no smoking in all rooms and balconies. Here is what happened to us.....DH-32, Me-28

We check in on Sun. Nov. 11th around 1PM and take our things to our room. I can't remember our exact room number, but it was 31 something. It was in an interior corner the side closest to the parking lot if that helps. Well, the first night everything was fine. The second night we arrived back from a day at Epcot, ate some dinner, go to bed and at around 12AM we both wake up to the smell of smoke in our room. Neither of us smoke and I guess you could say we are sensitive to it but we don't have asthma and aren't allergic to it. At first we couldn't tell if it truly was cigarette smoke or some other smoke. It just kept getting stronger and stronger. And for it to wake us both up it had to have been pretty strong. DH goes outside to look around and see if he sees anyone smoking. Nothing. Even if someone had been smoking out there it couldn't have been that strong in our room unless they had been laying down blowing it under our door. It was stronger than alot of bars I've been to. We finally realize it is strongest in the bathroom and figure it must be coming from the vent. So DH calls the front desk and tells them how we were both asleep and were awaken by the smell of smoke. She asks if we looked around outside and he said yes and didn't see anyone. I ask to make sure there isn't a fire nearby and we aren't smelling that because it was just soooo strong I wanted to be sure. She assures us there is no fire. Then she jokes with him and says, "Are you sure your wife isn't smoking in the bathroom and hiding it from you?" He told her no, that neither of us smoke, but it was very strong. She says that they could bring an air purifier to the room for us. He asks me if that's what I want and I was just so tired that I said not tonight and maybe tomorrow if we still smell it. She said okay and they hang up. Well, we close the bathroom door and finally get back to sleep.

The next morning we wake up and it doesn't smell as bad. Until DH opens the bathroom door and the smell pours out of their. It was worse than the night before. He hurries up and shuts the door back. It was so bad it was like someone was standing right in front of you blowing it straight in your face. DH really has to go to the bathroom so he goes to the ones by the bowling pool to use that. He's also pretty upset about the girl at the desk the night before joking about it being me smoking in the bathroom. While he is gone I call the front desk and explain how we had called last night and wake up this morning, had the bathroom door closed last night and when we open it it's worse. I told her it's so bad we can't even use our bathroom. She apologizes and tells me that 16 rooms are connected through the same bathroom vents. 4 over and all 4 floors. So, if anyone in any of those rooms was smoking in their bathroom they probably had their vent on blowing it into it but all it does is send it throughout the other rooms. She says she can move us to another room not connected to these and also will give us 25% off the last nights stay. She says to have our bags packed under the window and they will move them for us while we are away today. I also got to pick which area I wanted to move to and could have even chose preferred but because we like it more quiet we stayed in the 50's section. DH comes back and I tell him about everything but he is still upset about the other womans comments and that we have to pack up everything and move because of someone else thinking they can get away with smoking in their room.

I also was reading throught the papers they give you when you check in and it says if they find out you have smoked in your room or balcony it is a minimum $200 fine. I would think that would just cover them having to give the other 15 rooms a percentage off if they complain of the smell. BTW, we didn't have any problems in the room they moved us to for the remainder of our stay, which was 5 more days.

Closing thoughts--
- We still love the Pop for all the reasons mentioned in the 1st paragraph.
- I do not approve of the new no-smoking in the rooms policy even though we are non-smokers.
- I do not agree with the smoking areas. I understand that they are made centrally located for all, but that also means that every non-smoker must walk through a cloud of smoke to get to where they need to. ie:Right by the doors to enter the main building, and on the main paths to the main building.
- There will always be people who think they can get away with something, thus ruining things for others, and causing headaches both for the cast members and guests.
- I think they should make one building or half a building just for smokers and furthest from the main guest areas(pool, main building) or else have one of those 16 block of rooms in each building for smokers.

I'm also thinking of sending these thoughts to Disney. Does anyone know the best place to send this and get a response?

Thank you and I hope this helps someone else, April

We stayed at Pop in August 006 and the smoke that flowed through the vents made our experience miserable. I suppose it could have happened anywhere but the fact that it wasnt dealt with and our complaint wasnt taken seriously put us off ever staying there again. We stayed at a time when smoking was allowed but even so, the fact that it leaked into other rooms and made our room, clothes and person smell wasnt nice. Disney has a problem. They need to deal with it.

Sorry your trip was clouded with smoke! I think the Pop really should have looked for the culprits. Tis why the rules are in place. But I am glad to hear they moved you to another room.

I never understood why some people just couldn't follow the rules.

We have stayed at the Pop twice and we are staying there a third time in 2008. Neither me or my mom smoke and my little brother has severe asthma. I don't know what we would have done if we smelt the smoke.

This copied from the sticky thread....

If you agree OR disagree with the policy, I'd like to point out your interests are best served by writing the Walt Disney Company directly :

Please DO tell WDW what you think!!!

Your stay isn't the first one I've read about where there have been problems with this new rule... I just posted on the smoking thread that it seems all Disney has done is spread the smokers out into areas that were never smoking areas before, and it's causing more problems than good... Die hard smokers are going to smoke... period... and bad weather and LATE night are two times it seems that smokers are going to break the rules... Even those that otherwise obey the rules... Personally I don't feel this rule is fair to anyone, smoker or non... :scared:

I can sympathize with your experience. But an idiot smoking in a nonsmoking room can happen at any resort, whether or not there are nonsmoking rooms available at that hotel. We've had it happen to us at SSR, WL, and POFQ, as well as many non WDW hotels. Disney has had nonsmoking rooms for years, and people still would smoke in nonsmoking rooms. I think the new policy is a good one because it's going to save on cleaning costs and damage to furnishings because most people will follow the non smoking rules. If they don't follow the rules, they will be charged the cleaning fee, and that's how it should be. That's probably the main reason hotels are going this way, including the major chains- it's going to save them money. Also, giving the smokers a smoking area is the best solution since they most likely aren't going to stop smoking while at Disney. If a smoker is being courteous and smoking in the designated area, I will be happy to avoid walking through it, or at least hold my breath until I'm on the other side. Smoking rooms do not solve the problem of people smoking in nonsmoking rooms. Now that all the rooms are nonsmoking, it's still not going to make a difference to those idiots who think they don't have to follow the rules. The difference now is that they will be paying for the cleaning and damage to the room.

DW smokes and always follows the rules . We don't mind the new rules and ask to be put on the first floor closest to a DSA as possible.

I do think this is the type of thing that will be happening more and more with the current rules. It also points out how if they don't catch you with the Cig in hand how can they really blame those doing the smoking in the bathrooms.

One last thing we had this problem a few years ago at POP and just kept the lights and fan running . I guess it's harder for it to come through when it's trying to push air out of the bathroom.

I still think they did the policy for Insurance discounts more then for Guest appeal. Or they would enforce (and not Joke) about the policy better.

She apologizes and tells me that 16 rooms are connected through the same bathroom vents. 4 over and all 4 floors.

I am so sorry that happened to you.
I had that the bathroom ventilation at Pop connects with 15 other rooms.
I think that is another reason why a lot of guests staying at Pop hear a lot of sounds coming from other rooms and think the walls are "paper thin" at Pop.
The sounds are most likely coming through the vents --NOT the walls.

We stay at All Star Music and my DH who is a builder remarked about how quiet the rooms are at All Star Music. We never our heard our neighbors and I only heard a toilet flush (softly) once when I was awake during the night.

I had read that the ventilation system at Pop is set up different than the system at the All Star resorts.
Apparently 16 rooms at Pop all share the same ventilation system.
That is why Pop had a lot of problems with guests smelling smoke when smokers would smoke in neighboring rooms.

I think the room noises are also traveling through the ventilation system at Pop.

So even though the walls may not be any thinner at Pop the rooms seem to be noisier there.

Just my 2 cents

Have fun at Disney!:wizard:

When so many were begging Disney to go nonsmoking I was so against it for this very reason, I knew it would simply make it worse.

For any future concerns, when you are at Disney and you call the Front Desk from your room, you do not get the Front Desk you get the Disney Call Center and yes they could care less about what is going on the resort.

I suggest two things either go to the Front Desk in person and ask to speak to the on duty manager and express your concerns in person, or ask to have a manager sent to your room to smell the problem in person.

Also please write Disney and let them know. They say they never get complaints about the new policy.

- I think they should make one building or half a building just for smokers and furthest from the main guest areas(pool, main building) or else have one of those 16 block of rooms in each building for smokers.

Well that anymore is a moot point as there isnt SUPPOSED to be smoking in any building.

It just wont matter, if someone wants to smoke, they will. If they are supposed to or not, to a lot of people it doesnt matter. Now, that's not saying all smokers do, as a matter of fact I'd say the large majority of smokers, know it smells, know it offends others, and do try their best NOT to affect others. But as with every other thing out there. You'll always have your bad apples that ruin it for everyone else..

crap, I'm staying at Pop Century for 10 days over xmas and new years. The busiest time of the year...I hope I don't encounter this

Thank you to everyone for your comments. I will definately write to Disney about our experience and will let everyone know about any reply I receive.

I'd also like to thank any smokers who do follow the rules. While neither DH or I are smokers I can understand your right to do so if you choose. I also can understand that if you do smoke and it is is the middle of the night or it is raining or very cold out how one would not want to have to either bundle up, get out of their pjs, or have to carry an umbrella with them to smoke. Yet, this is what they would have to do follow the rules. I can see both sides.

I just feel that Disney really needs to find some other solution. Maybe changing the rooms to not having the vents connected would be part of a solution.

Here's wishing for some change in the right direction... :genie:

I am surprised (a bit) that WDW does not have the super sensitive smoke detectors used to deter smoking. I have twice stayed at hotels where the fire alarm went off during the night because someone was smoking in a non-smoking room.

We are staying at POP for the 1st time in Feb. I hope we do not encounter this. I'll have a sinus headache for sure.:headache:

?? - which fireworks can you see from the 50's building? I'm not sure what building that we will be in.:dance3:

I have to agree with this.

I was nervous about my most recent Pop stay because I had heard horror stories about people breaking all sorts of rules at the resort. I didn't have too many problems, thankfully.

I think you should write to Disney about your experience. They need to know what happened. So many people will come home and vent about something like this and never tell the right people (DISNEY). A local restaurant has this on their menu: "If you are pleased with our service, tell your friends. If you are not, tell US and we will make it right."

Good luck! Let us know what Disney says!

Write to the Disney Communications address - and copy the manager at pop century - be absolutely factual, with dates, times, room numbers and what you did to mitigate the problem. Be clear that you aren't looking for a perk, but want to address what appears to be an ongoing problem. They *WILL* read your letter, and probably call you, as well.

I used to smoke and quit over 13 years ago and I am now allergic to cigarette smoke and have terrible allergies. DH still smokes and he goes outside when we are home. When we are at our other home (WDW) he does go to the DSA. I don't care if someone smokes but at least have the consideration for others around you who do not. My letter and complaint would have been written/made even before we left WDW. At least you were able to move to another room and as far as the person at the front desk or call center goes, making a comment like she did is uncalled for and unprofessional.

I agree that one building should be set aside for the smokers. The odor is offensive and stays with anyone for a while if they don't smoke. I would have been plugged solid and wouldn't be able to breathe deeply if I were in your shoes..they would have done something immediately for me and no joking around...I don't think they would have wanted me at the front desk with a dr. or any type of medical help... Sorry you had to have this experience..

Me and DH are both smokers and it drives us crazy when we see people smoking anywhere but in the designated smoking areas. Even before WDW had the designated smoking areas we would always try to find and out of the way place to have a cigarette. We would never walk around with one in our hand, etc. God forbid a child, so excited about being at Disney and not paying attention walks into a lit cigarette:scared1:

I promised everyone I'd let then know if I got a response to my email.....Here it is. Doesn't seem too promising to me. I'm not really sure that calling her would help anything and I don't really want to have to spend my money to call her long distance. What are your thoughts??

we stayed at the All Star Music in November (nov 5th to the 14th)..

the entire time we were there, there was a smoker about 8 rooms down from us...
her smoke didn't bother us, but i'm sure that the room next to her must have smelled horrendous..
and her room must have smelled awful as well...although she smoked on the balcony, she had the door to her room propped open...

if we'd been next to her i would have insisted moving...as it was, we had to walk through her smoke to get to our room...

now that i think about it, i also had to run another gauntlet of smoke getting to and from our room.....there were several smokers in the inner courtyard right by the building (just off of the staircase)...
so several times i passed through their halo of smoke on the way to the main building..

pretty obnoxious of them, though i never said anything to them..
i figured anyone smoking where it's not permitted probably isn't going to be very receptive to comments....
