Smokers!

Where were you? I've never see a "ton" of smokers anywhere they please outside of a weekend at Food and Wine. The only reason it gets out of hand during Food and Wine is it can get dangerous for CMs with drunk guests. I remember being told to "pick my battles".

It was a bigger issue at my resort than the parks my last visit. I was actually really surprised to see how many people ignored the smoking area at the all star I was staying at vs when I've stayed at a moderate resort. I wasn't too annoyed with people smoking outside of their rooms. I was more annoyed the two times people were smoking waiting for their buses.

I grew up in a house of smokers though so it's nothing but a slight annoyance for me. I get far more annoyed by adults swearing, or cutting lines than smokers.

I think the worst areas are the areas heading to the buses. Plenty of folks feel it's ok to light up on the way. Spoke to a cast member and she agreed the trend is upward. I think the heavy air down here is not helping either. I agree it's a matter of picking your battles. I think I've noticed it most this trip at Epcot and DHS. Hopefully June will be better.

I only encountered two smoking outside of where they should be... one while walking through AK and one outside Space Mountain. I notified a CM & in both instances, they were asked to move or stop.

I think part of the problem is that Disney does not always have smoking areas that are easy to find and has sometimes moved them without changing maps for example (not that it's an excuse really but it doesn't help). That and some people are just too lazy to walk to the nearest one! Really sorry people have had such bad experiences with smokers. The only time I have ever smoked at Disney outside of a smoking area was walking across the car park at POR after MK EMH (so I was alone and there was no one around) and that was just habit as a safety precaution (I am very prepared to use it as a weapon :teeth:).

I encountered it at HS.

I think what happens is one inconsiderate person lights up. Then other smokers see it and assume that it must be a smoking area and then you get a whole lot of them in one place! Somehow it only really bothers me at MK. Everywhere else I can deal with it (and walk quickly through the haze) but smokers at MK really bother me!

Our experience with smokers in the parks hasn't been bad at all. Just about all the ones we saw were in the DSA's.

How many times we sat in the DSA to have a non smoker come and sit and then complain that people are smoking. In Studios there is only 2 smoking areas. I dont know if I dont pay attention but have not seen people light up when they were not in the DSA

I noticed smokers at the resort, but they were always in the correct smoking areas. In the parks, i would just point it out to a cm.

My husband (smoker) is like the smokkng police. He pretty much stalked a guy in Universal who was walking around with a cigarette. Bringing children into the smoking areas is horrible too and makes the compliant smokers feel bad about smoking there. I do wish they had a smoking section anywhere near the bus stops...missed a few buses from Pop because cant see the busstop from the closest smoking section lol

Now that you mentioned it, we actually walked past a couple women smoking right on the sidewalk of Main Street in MK one morning. Kinda near the Starbucks. CMs were nearby and no one said anything. It was like walking through a thick cloud of smoke. My husband and I just speed-walked around them and looked to see if any CMs were going to ask them to move (they didn't). I felt bad for the kids coming into the MK and having to go through the smoke. Not very magical! :(

While I haven't seen a ton of smokers outside of the designated areas, what I have noticed is people with the ecigs or vapes walking around. As a former smoker, smoke itself doesn't really bother me too much, but I hate the sickly sweet smell of some of those vape capsules.

Vapes are the same as cigarettes but easier to hide. IF you see a vapor and it bothers you tell a CM or if you are ballsy enough tell them yourself that ecigs are cigerettes in Disney's eyes.

I agree ecigs are used so much at Disney (and anywhere for that matter) in inappropriate places. We have a guy at my office who uses one in the office even though cigarettes indoors are illegal in NYC. I ask my office manager and he said he hadn't done anything because he wasn't sure if it was illegal or not.

My system (library) just recently included ecigs/vapes in our alcohol and tobacco policy. For the longest time they did not because so many of them don't actually use tobacco. But in the end people are often bothered by the scents as much as by tobacco.

My dad used to smoke a pipe (cherry scented tobacco) and I loved the smell and thought I would like the scented vapes but nope it is very distinctive.

I haven't tried them as I am the type that I would just go back to smoking if I even tried the vapes, but those scented things pretty much sealed the deal for me.

Just make sure you aren't accidentally walking through the smoking sections before you complain.

Hmm. Growing up with smokers I am MORE annoyed at it. But I am currently right now at this moment awake (pacific time usual late riser) bc I'm dealing with an asthma attack bc my lungs were damaged by my parents' habits. Mom was asthmatic from birth (her dad smoked all over her) so I'm not sure what she was thinking taking it up at 15. At least she stopped at 35 after a massive asthma attack made her realize we would go to our dad if she died. Dad is now asthmatic. It makes me angry that my lungs are damaged bc of it. And I cannot comprehend why there are ANY smokers younger than 50. Why anyone would start, given what we have known for so long now, boggles my mind.

So we definitely have opposite annoyances. Bad words are, after all, just words.

It will continue to be a problem until Disney chooses to do something about it consistently. CMs aren't going to be confrontational and generally are too busy to alert management/security for something like that. In the last few years I have witnessed several incidences of behavior that "isn't allowed" that a CM asked a guest to rectify, and the guest either flat out ignored it or told the CM "No." This includes smoking in lines and bathrooms, vaping, drinking by the pool, and general things that are in place to keep attractions running smoothly (i.e., line progression, seating). Guest behavior is certainly not improving, and as Disney's prices increase the entitlement behavior will continue and escalate.
