Holy cow, am I ever stunned at that performance.

That was a FANTASTIC field he just TROUNCED by about 15 lengths.

This horse could do it. He really could.

*makes plans in 3 weeks to go to New York*

go Smarty Jones :) i wanted to bet on him but i cant place bets yet and grandpa said he didnt think he would win so he wasnt gonna put a bet in!!!!! grrr lol:o

Yeah Smarty Jones!!! He's representin' Philly!

Thanks, theSurlyMermaid! This city hasn't had many wins in anything lately lol, so this is nice.

Okay, the official trouncing was by 11 lengths. It only looked like 15!

I don't know that I can stress this enough...that was a first class field he just ran all over. Last year, when Funny CIde won the Preakness in a trouncing, the difference was Funny Cide beat a third rate field.

I cannot believe what I just saw. It was absolutely dominant.

BTW, who else thinks Smarty Jones' trainer looks like Eddie Izzard. The resemblance is unbelieveable and makes me all that bigger a fan!

It was an awesome race...the second place horse sure looked like he was going to catch up....but wow!! Smarty Jones really turned it on...

Zurgswife....lol, I LOVE your screenname.

Last year I was at the Belmont in the pouring rain to see if I would witness a triple crown...all for naught. I was crushed. This year, I swore I wouldn't do that to myself again, but OH MAN....its the weekend of my birthday and what a present that would be.

I'm doing it. I have to.

That would be awesome to see, SurlyMermaid! A Triple Crown winner! :p

After watching the race today, I think he can win it. Go Smarty Jones! :jumping1:

Chester Co horse and proud..that's where we are from! (Originally)

I watched the race from Philadelphia Park Race Track, home of Smarty Jones, and the crowd there was going crazy with excitement! It was great!

I can't believe he won!! If he does the Triple Crown, I want a parade down Broad Street!

:bounce:

I was born in June of 1973, which means Secretariat was winning the Triple Crown right around that time. Then Seattle Slew in '77 and Affirmed in '78...I was too young to remember those.

Oh, how I always wanted to see a Triple Crown. I've watched every race since Ferdinand in '86 and never once has it happened. I suffered though the close calls, like my favorites Alysheba and Sunday Silence, and years where there was no chance at all.

Please, please PLEASE let this be the year.

I don't watch a lot of horse racing and don't understand much about it at all, but I can still tell which horse is in the lead! I am so drawn to races like today and would LOVE to be there for one of the Triple Crown races. (Hope that's the right terminology!) I just think it would be neat to experience it. I wouldn't dare try to bet....I'd 'GoofItUp' for sure!

theSurlyMermaid, if you get to go you'll have to tell us all about it!

I sure will, Goofitup, and I can tell you a little bit of what it was like from last year alone. Firstly, to get a seat with all the fancy women wearing hats....well, that probably costs a bundle, but we did a general admission thing and it cost maybe two dollars a person. I'm serious. Then we were able to get all the way to the rail at the homestretch. I mean, you couldn't have a better view...the horses charged down the homestretch right in front of you.

Of course, last year it was pouring down rain and it was FREEZING, so if its even remotely nice this year, I bet we'll have to get there at 8am to even hope to get a similar place. You can bring a lawnchair, but we did not, so we stood for hours. Would have been worth it if Funny Cide had won, but he didn't and we knew he wasn't going to fairly early.

But what a rush! Belmont Park is a HUGE track and the excitement....well, there's nothing like it. And this year, unlike last, people actually expect Smarty Jones to win....he's the best and he's beaten his best rivals convincingly. Every year, the sportswriters always come up with reasons why the current anointed horse won't win...and each year, they've been right. But this has to be the first year I've seen where the writers can't think of a reason he'll lose.

GO SMARTY JONES!

For those who don't know how to bet, its easy!

the most you need is $2.00. You pick a horse, look at its number (Smarty is #7) , and go to the teller at the track or turf club and say "$2.00 on #7 for Belmont."

If the odds are small numbers, which they always are on popular horses, like 3-1, 2-1 ,etc you won't get much money back if the horse wins unless you wager a lot of money.

I won a big $3.00 and change on Smarty ! But I don't care- it was FUN!!
