my wife just had her gastric banding surgery with me to follow sometime this summer. ( its the one they make your stomach pouch smaller, not the one you actually bypass the stomach).

Any ideas on good, cheap places to eat in wdw and area without having to throw away most of the entre?

literally 2 chicken nuggets and some water fill my wife up...

good soup?? good kid portions??

please help if you can

Well, first of all I am thinking I wish 2 chicken nuggets would fill me up...it would save me tons on my May trip! You know, I think there are lots of options for you and your DW. One thing you might want to consider is just grazing throughout the day, and maybe sharing with each other. You could share a Dole Pineapple float (Like pineapple sorbet with pineapple juice in it...yum!) at the MK. There are soft pretzels, and egg rolls, and all sorts of other smaller items you can get at carts and fast food spots throughout the parks. Also, you could even try some of the sit down restaurants, and just order an appetizer or soup (I hear the Beer Cheese soup at Le Cellier is to die for). Ordering appetizers, soup or salad at a sit-down should not cost too much, but might give you a nice and cool break from the parks. Getting a kids meal is an option for you too and the fast food locations, as well as the sit down restaurants have them. Check out the menus (adults and kids) at www.wdwig.com. Enjoy your trip and congratulations on your upcoming "thinner" lifestyle:)

DD and I are not big eater either.

We like to go to the Land food court and split a sandwich between us plus l small bowl of homemade soup for each. Very good.

We split meals most places we go too.

Your wife can always order a kids meal at the counter services.

I would split meals. Cosmic Ray's has the best 1/2 rotisserie chicken and mashed potatoes. I LOVE it. We split it with our 2 daughters and it was enough, but they were 1 and 3. I would definately check out the menus and split a meal and then enjoy the snacks throughout the parks. Have a great time and enjoy!!!

I too have wondered about what I will eat or not eat for that matter. I've never been, so I can't recommend specific foods yet. I'm not sure what restrictions that your wife has with the banding or how far out from surgery she is. I know that I am on a low carb no sugar diet. I can eat carbs but it slows my weightloss significantly. I can't eat sugar at all or I will get sick. I think a good choice would be for you to order something that she likes and let her nibble off of it. I will have my husband and 3 kids with me, so I will be doing that myself. I didn't plan many character meals because I saw no point in paying $20+ for a buffet meal that I would only be able to eat 3 or 4 bites of. Appetizers is another good idea. As well as kids meals. From the research that I've done thus far, it seems most places are fine with adults sharing or ordering kids meals. The problem with kids meals, in my case, is that they are carb laden. Good luck and I'm sure you will do just fine. Sharing meals works wonders for my hubby and I. I've become a very cheap date! :p

I had gastric bypass surgery last May and my surgeon gave me a card to use in restaurants that explains the procedure, shows a diagram of how small my new stomach is, and requests that I be allowed to order from the children's menu or share with a family member. I just wonder if any Disney restaurants or Character meals would honor this card? I hate to pay a fortune for a Character meal that I can only eat 3-4 ounces of! I did email Disney to ask but have not received a reply as yet. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!

In any restaurants at WDW you can split a meal for no extra cost except Shula's, buffet's, and I would think probably V&A's.

As far as the buffet's go, that's going to be trickier. They are not going to allow you to just eat some from someone else's plate at no additional charge, but might be willing to charge you half price, or a child's meal price. If they say no, then you can just avoid the buffet's and eat only at full service places which will have no problem with you and your wife splitting a meal (which I would imagine would be a better option than eating a steady diet of items from the kids menu--after three days of chicken fingers you might start to grow feathers. :) IMHO the only buffet at WDW worth visiting is the Cape May...so you're not going to be missing anything by skippping them.

Also, you might get more response posting this over on the disabilities boards--there's lots of folks over there who are familiar with a wide range of issues, ranging from mobility issues to food allergies to anything in between.

Best of luck to you!

Anne

I'm not a big eater either - and I'm very picky - so DF and I stick to counter service. Yes, i've gotten kids meals before - but sometimes all they have on the kids menu is chicken nuggets/burgers/PBJ/mac and cheese. get kinda sick of that after a while.

personally, sit-down meals for me are a waste - I never come close to finishing my meal. so counter service is just more economical for me.

I do have to reccommend the Tusker house in DAK - healthy food (1/2 a roasted chicken is GREAT - DF and I can split it - with him eating most of it) and counter service.

good luck with everything!

Also remember that many restaurants have similar menus at lunch but the cost is less. I also noticed that many of the nicer places have wonderful appetizer menus. You and your wife might share an appetizer.

I am struggling with WW so I was rather food-obsessed on my last trip. It's a lifelong battle... Came back a few pounds heavier but am right back on track again. I wish you a happy and healthy trip!

If your looking for quick n tasty soups in counter service places id recommend Cosmic Rays chicken soup and veggie soup at the little huddle of stores near tower of terror, very good if your getting fed up of fast food too :D

Vintage Knight,

I had the surgery in Mid...September last year and traveled with someone who had it October 1st of last year. We were there over Thanksgiving for about 10 days. Since we were just out of Surgery we might have been a bit more limited than you might be when you go. I did call Disney and spoke with there special needs department (after speaking with dinning reservations). They ended up transfering me several times I finally ended up with someone who had the surgery herself about a year before. She was familer with the resturant card the doctors give you. She said at this time Disney will not honor them.

That being said they will most likely leave out the charater meals and buffets unless you want to pay regular rate and eat nothing.

What we ended up doing was mostly fast food/counter service. Sharing a soup or salad at Cosmic rays or doing a grilled chicken breast sandwich and asking for fruit instead of fries when offered. Disney has cut back a little since December on portion sizes, but we still ended up getting rid of a lot of it then. Remember don't over eat you can always have that sandwich and if you still need something a half hour later get a treat like a dolewhip to share (don't try to do one each you'll hate yourself later.) Remember your on vacation so a small treat might be ok since you are doing a lot more walking (excersice than usual).

For sit down dinning you also will end up sharing or asking for take out. We did this a couple of times at Prime time and took the leftovers back since we had a cooler in the room. But if you do take out remember you are going to have to carry it around so try to do it at the end of the day.

***Remember to Tip the staff at as if you ordered 2 items instead of 1 if you share. Even the lady at Disney seemed to think this was the best option. We did this every time for sit down dinning we only had one bad experience and that was at Mama Melroses. I guess the waiter thought we were trying to be cheep so the service was really bad. Every other place was fine and the staff at primetime was great about it.

I haven't had gastric bypass surgery but went last year while I was on WW. I was limited in what I ate and considered the cost of buffets as paying for the price of being entertained in the restaurant. My wife and I certainly split things and I often ordered off the appetizer menu. If you're looking for healthy, keep an eye on the stands around the parks, which sometimes offer fresh veggies or fruit...This post is now way off topic. Don't be afraid to ask for what you want in restaurants. Most of all, have fun and expect to hemmorhage money while in WDW anyway!

DW & I almost always split sandwiches, meals, snacks & desserts at WDW. In our case it's not because of lack of appetite, but because it allows us to eat the many different foods that we love or new ones we want to try. One thing we did more of on our last trip is skip the fries they try to push with just about every sandwich at the counter service places. An example would be the "chicken tenders-served with fries". I ordered the tenders & said I didn't want fries. No problem, and it rang up for $1.80 less.

BadgerBruce, that's great to know. Those fries are bad for you and gross besides! If they are in front of me I eat them! Now I know I can "delete" them...
