Looking at flights from MCO to Columbus, Ohio. I can get a non-stop through Delta for after our cruise, but it is on a 37 passenger plane. Having never flown on one of these, should I consider it for the 3 of us or do a 1-stop on a much larger plane?

While I wouldn't want to fly cross country on one, we've found them safe and comfortable for shorter hops. We're on one PHL to DTW next weekend.

I fly to BTV fairly regularly and am usually on one to there as well.

I'd take the non-stop on one of those.

As an FYI, food service is usually non-existant, but they do beverrage service. Because there are less px, we've found the FA's to be very cordial and personable on those planes.

Larger's not necessarily better for planes and the extra stop on Delta, either
in ATL or CVG can cause further problems /delays. I used to fly on the embraer 145 from CVG to Fort Wayne and it was fine. Yes, it was a shorter flight but I think you are probably looking at just over 2 hours from Columbus to MCO. With three of you, you'll have a whole row (that is if the plane isn't sold out). Also,
luggage is delivered quicker due to the limited number of passengers. Direct/Nonstop is the way to go if you want to get to WDW quickly!! :moped:

I like these small planes better. Not as long to board or deplane, and if you are in the single seats, more leg room. As far as turbulence is concerned, I found it no worse in the smaller plane than the bigger one. I'm doing the CMH-MCO flight in May, I can post after that trip how it was. I know that Helenabear flies that flight nearly every time she goes, you might ask her.

Thanks for the replies!

It is the only non-stop to Columbus.

We usually fly out of Cleveland since that is much closer, but the airfare out of Columbus to LA is unbeatable compared to up here. That means I need to fly back to COlumbus from MCO.

Everything you guys said about shorter boarding times, etc.. makes perfect sense.

yep, Cleveland is my "normal" airport too. The prices weren't much different, but the flight times out of CMH are wonderful. I have a 6:00 am flight, and will be in MCO at 8:15 am. Fly back out of MCO at 6:40 pm. Can't get anything any later than 5 to Cleveland. I go to Columbus on business 1-2 times a month, so checked it out last time I was there. A ton of hotels close by!

I booked this flight.

Anyone know of luggage restrictions since it is a smaller plane? I checked Delta's website, but couldn't find anything for the small jets.

We will going on the 2 week Panama Canal cruise on the Magic, plus a couple of days in Disney Land before. SO, we will have a lot of stuff.

I live in Columbus and take these "commuter" type flights on Delta all the time for business trips. Seems as though most of the Delta flights originating at CMH are on these smaller "commuter" type planes. As a general rule they are not bad flights as long as they are not completely full. The planes are small, the aisles are small and it seems to me that the seats themselves are smaller, so when the plane is full it is really :crowded:!

As far as luggage goes, I'd plan to gate check anything larger than a handbag or laptop. The overheads are really small and it is a stuggle to get even a small suitcase in the tight space. Most of the time on the commuter flights they will request that you gate check anything larger than a purse or a laptop anyway (including stroller), especially if the flight is full or even close full. To gate check your bags- you just leave them on the tarmack with an agent who gives you a baggage tag then, they will wait a few minutes to allow everyone to de-plane, but when you are allowed to de-plane your bags are waiting for you on the tarmack. No need to go to baggage claim to retrieve them this way, just pick them up on your way off the plane and your all set. If they do not request that you gate check your bags, I don't know that you could get a suitcase over 19" or so in the overheads or even under the seats (unless your really good at stuffing sausage :teeth: ).

Another thing to keep in mind, if you check your bags when you check in at the airport. If the plane is full (or close to full) they may send your luggage on another/later flight due to weight considerations on your flight. In the words of a Delta agent "they would rather get people to the destination and send bags later." I have had this happen a couple of times. The worst was this Christmas when DD and I took a trip to ATL, we check 3 bags and they arrived in ATL on 3 different flights at 3 different times :earseek:! My theory up to this point when I fly on a smaller plane was to check all of my bags since I'd have to gate check them anyway, plus this way there is no need have to lug them through security and then through the airport. However... after our Dec trip I think I'll be gate checking bags for now on and hopefully avoiding the 3 hours at the airport collecting baggage after the flight arrives :earboy2:.

Oh, and by the way it is not possible to get frequent flier miles for your bags...I asked, figured if my bags came on three different flights I should get the mileage for three flights. The agent thought I was a nut... :rotfl2: but she did give me three $50 gift Delta certificates, so I can't complain to much.

Same as a normal Delta flight. 2 checked per passenger free of charge, anything over 50 pounds subject to additional fee, incremental as it the weight
increases (ie. 75 pounds etc.). One carry-on, plus a personal item (purser, briefcase, etc) per passenger. Hope that helps. :magnify:

Thanks for the info!

Will a car seat fit on the plane? If not, then I may not even take it and just belt DD in.

Yes, a car seat will fit. (Maybe I should have said "should fit", at least ours has fit on every plane we've taken it on, including RegionalJets and turboprops.)
