Slow around here?

I think those threads are different BSH. Those threads always have regulars who start them....and then participate. So I say...have at it!. The other threads...are started by someone who never participates. My theory is that it's one or more of the mods....that start those threads to keep the board "moving" so to speak. Otherwise it makes no sense.
I used to answer the questions sometimes, and then another poster pointed out that a lot of the questions could be used for phishing. That possibility had never occurred to me, so I chose to put them on ignore. I know there are posters who think that even the 'name a song...' threads are stupid, but they get people engaged. Personally, I like putting on my thinking cap or searching for a song to fit the topic. I also participate sometimes in the more serious threads if I have something to say. That's life; you can't be deadly serious all the time.

I'm one who doesn't like the "name a song" threads...but they get people involved. They are obviously popular and generate a lot of responses. I don't know why people get all annoyed about it. If the topic isn't for you it's very easy to just skip it. I have certain people on ignore as well because I don't care for their threads, but others love to participate. I don't feel like just because something isn't my cup of tea it shouldn't be allowed to be posted. And you never know what topic will cause spinoff posts that are also interesting.

I actually have learned things and adjusted my perspective and opinion on several things by reading some of the things here. There are certainly things I won't change a view on but I am thankful for different opinions because it makes me reconsider at times.

I know people like to say debates/discussions never change anyones mind but I disagree. There have been times when in a discussion someone point out a differing point of view and I’ve though huh, I never thought about it like that. So yes you can change points of view or at least make someone think about it.

True that you can't be deadly serious all of the time, but there are times when our world turns deadly serious....overnight. I just find it silly that we're not allowed to discuss those events here. I definitely spend less time here during those times as I search for adult conversation elsewhere.

I can't tell you how many times in 20 years here that a discussion changed my view on a topic. Or gave me perspective that I may not agree with, but have to understand many people believe.

The bolded is a big part. Not that my mind has been changed (it has, some), but the discussions do help me see other points of view.

I seldom change my mind on important things; my positions are carefully considered and I could clearly give my reasons, if asked. But it also does mean something to me to understand why others think/feel the way they do, especially when they don't agree with me.
99% of the threads are boring. The interesting ones get closed. This thread on how boring this board is is fairly interesting. :)
Ha! There have been many of threads on the exact same topic. And most posters say the exact same things in them, practically word for word. Including me. :wave2:

I can’t say my mind has ever been changed by someone on here. At least not on anything to do with my core values. Now when it comes to vacations, cruises, hotels, food etc I’ve gotten a lot of great advice and have been persuaded to try a few new things.

Well, my mind has been changed towards my core values about money by many posts on these boards. Many who take multiple Disney cruises a year at concierge level at a cost of about $10,000 per adult consider that a typical middle class vacation. But many of those also consider an individual making $150,000 a year to be middle class. And they consider having to pay $10,000 a year in property taxes to be typical middle class. Certainly something I considered when I got my property last week and my annual bill jumped to $2,624 thanks to some voter approved bonds.

Mine hasn't been that low in over 20 years. But then we are one of the highest property tax states and counties in the country.
20 years ago mine were $1,600. 40 years ago, when I bought the house, they were $1,100.

Same....closest we ever got was when we lived in Orlando in 2004-07....taxes were around 6K per year. Highest we ever had in NJ was 15K a year when we owned a McMansion.....now we're at 11K or so on the house we've been in for the last 16 years.

Apparently there are six states where property owners no longer have to pay any property taxes after they reach age 65. I picked the wrong state to live in!

When we purchased our home almost 53 years ago, taxes were $700 a year. Now, just under $10,000. Marie has an aunt in Encino, house is 1,100 sq ft, 2 BR, 1 Ba, online value, just under $1,200,000, tax $1,048. Ten years ago, $883.

That would be nice! Property taxes are very high here in NJ. Some towns are worse than others....my town is fairly high based on property values. The towns to the east of me, closer to the ocean with a fair amount of legit "mansions"....no "mc" about them.....have property taxes exceeding 100K per year.

Lol. I’ve been shocked by some of the same things. I’m not sure traditional middle class can afford Disney anymore that’s why they’re not around here. Some will claim Disney has never been affordable to the middle class, but I think it used to be within reach with some savings and planning. Not so sure anymore.

i was paying about that from 2011-2015 but then it bumped up to about $3100 the next year and $3300 the following. our taxes were decreased in 2018 and 2019 to about $3000 but then the pandemic and telecommuting made our real estate market psycho hot so values went through the roof-now we are at about $4100. i won't complain though-it's less than i payed 17 years ago in california on a house property tax valued at far less (i lost track of the number of bonds we were paying on there).
