I wish it was 4 but when we saw the original plans for the house, the 4 brs were very very small so we had them change it up a bit. Now it has 3 big brs but I still want one more!!!
We live in a 225+ year old house, the former, Captain Samuel Jones Tavern.
We use 3 rooms upstairs as bedrooms & another room, the largest, was used as an 'assembly' room.
You could use it as a bedroom, but the arrangement in relation to another bedroom, off of it, makes for an odd flow to modern tastes. Of course, in tavern days they, slept folks all over the place
We have three that are right now true bedrooms. There is also a den that could be used as a fourth, it's got a small closet and French doors right now, but the doors could easily be swapped for solid doors. Because the closet is very small it would probably only be suitable for a small child or nursery. (It would be a perfect nursery as you can see it from teh kitchen and family room)
We do have two master bedrooms though, large with private en suite bath and large walk-in closets. DH and I have one, and our 20 year old son has the other. It's great because he's got plenty of room for his buddies to come over and hang out and play video games or whatever.
DH orginally built our split foyer home with 5 BR's. However, now that the kids are grown and we have an 'empty nest', I suggested he convert the two big BRm's downstairs into one big garage workshop. He did and he loves his AC/heated drive in joint where he can work restoring his Cougars! We still have 3 BRm's up, our master, one for grands when they stay over night and the other is our office/computer.
We have 5 but only use 4 as bedrooms, the 5th is a sitting room/tv room. Our other house, we currently have 2 (trying to sell one) has 5 bedrooms but could be 6 bedrooms. We used 3 of those bedrooms (the boys had a HUGE room that they shared).
We have 4 true bedrooms which are all being used and one that we added when we finished the basement. We use that as the cave, when someone needs to getaway (namely me)
