First trip to Hawaii was 50 years ago, and I went to a Luau. Not sure how authentic it was, but it was nice.
Last trip to Hawaii was in 2007. The Luaus cost $100 a person then and my wife and kids felt that was too much money, they wanted to do other things. My daughter is vegetarian so a roasted pig wasn't a big draw for her.
If I ever make it back to Hawaii I would like to go to the Luau at the Polynesian Cultural center, even though it costs $250 a person. I just remember going to the center and learned so much about the actual culture of Hawaii, not the Travel Agency version.
I've only been to the one at the Poly, in 1992. I remember a lot of it because I had so much fun. I still have a flamingo swizzle stick from the drink I had with my dinner.
The only one I have been to was at The Polynesian. It was back in the 1970s as part of our Senior Class trip. It was a been there done that for me . If we ever get to Hawaii I will look into going to an authentic Luau.
