Today is Veterans Day in America, but it doesn’t matter what country you live in, to be thankful for Veterans every day. Without our Veterans, our countries would not be what they are today. So, on this Veterans Day, tell us…..

Are you a Veteran?
Is anyone in your family a Veteran?
If yes…..who?
(multiple choice)

*Thank you to all our DIS Veterans from every country :thanks:

For Me……My Dad and my FIL are both Veterans. Those in my family that have passed away that were Veterans are my Stepdad, Grandpa & Grandma (my dad’s parents). Thank you to them and to all for your service.

My only experience with veterans are with the friends I've made outside of my old community. There were no veterans in or around my family growing up.

My grandfather served in the Navy during WWII and was on the USS Missouri during the Japanese surrender.

When I showed a coworker my grandfather's class picture from the Navy and he noticed that he was at Sampson, NY, my coworker did some quick digging and found out Hitlers nephew enlisted there a month before my grandfather.

Thank you for your service to all veterans

My father was in the Navy.... WWII and Korea.
He was on a ship during the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

My uncle was also in the Navy during WWII....in Japan.
My grandfather was in WWI. He helped build the Panama Canal

Other. Spouse is a veteran (surprised it wasn't an option...). He was in the Army in Germany in the mid 1970s and then served in the Army National Guard for 30+ years, including a year in Afghanistan imbedded with the Afghan National Police. He retired in 2012 as a LT COL.

My grandfather (Mom's father) served as a cook in the Army during WWII.

My dad was in the National Guard. One of my brothers was a Corporal in the Marine Corps but a motorcycle accident had him medically discharged because of that. My other brother served in the Army and retired as a Colonel. Several of my cousins served and one was injured in Iraq, thankfully not seriously. Someone in my extended family has served in the military every generation and in every major conflict going back to the Spanish-American War. My 3X great grandfathers even signed up to serve in the Civil War right after they immigrated to the United States.

My 17 year old grandson plans in enlisting as soon as he graduates from high school.

What a story! Thank you for posting the link!

So many veterans in my family it's hard to count. My son was a Navy Corpsman/RT, Hubby is (never was) a Marine, Daddy was a WWII Navy veteran, Brother Army, Nephew Marine, Uncle and Grandfather WWII, all the way back to the Revolutionary War there was a Grandfather/Uncle/Cousin who served. Had Grandfather's/Uncle's/Cousin's on both sides of both the Civil War and Revolutionary War. Evidently we are either a war like family or patriotic. Not sure which. Every direct ancestor I have landed here before the Revolutionary War on both sides of my family and all fought in that war. (except one 2x great grandfather that I can't trace any further back than him, I suspect something he didn't want anyone to know, he did fight in the Civil War though).

We have a lot of friends and family that are/were veterans. I actually have one friend who left the world of private medicine that's still serving as a nurse in the Navy. On the flipside, we have one friend who was an Air Force pilot that's now flying commercial jets.

As for family, we have a lot of Army among my family (and a few Marines), especially from the WWII era. The three standouts...
Maternal Grandfather - I don't remember his final rank, but he spent a lot of war stationed in France teaching hand to hand combat. I was periodically allowed to play with some of the little things he brought home.
Uncle Killed in Action - It took decades to confirm his status. I spent most of my childhood and a chunk of my adult life with him listed as missing. He was an Army pilot and we knew he was shot down over Germany, but it took that long to find other squad mates that could confirm that he perished.
Paternal Grandfather - The only piece of his war years that I ever saw was his gun. He didn't know what to do with it, so he used it as as a doorstop until it made him so sick that he turned it into a local Army office. He saw action throughout the war and it really scarred him. He started out in the North Africa campaign. I believe it was D+4 when he was repositioned to Normandy. Likely the worst he saw was during his time in Belgium. He definitely didn't like talking about it and he could never bring himself to turn to certain pages on the European calendar I'd made for him, but my parents did get a little look into his war life a few years ago when they spotted him in some footage for the show, World War II in Colour. After the Army, he worked in a Navy shipyard, so he continued to help once he came home.

Thank you, to ALL that have served to protect our freedoms! 🇺🇸🦅🗽
