A made up holiday? For sure...but then aren't all holidays made up for one reason or another???
Okay, a holiday in Mexico maybe. But Cinco De Mayo has no basis in the U.S.......other than beer sales.

I have family members with food allergies so will have at home Tacos, rice, and chips and salsa made so they can enjoy and might go to Rita’s for dessert.

Possibly, although I dare say there are probably several holidays that have no basis in the U.S. but are still celebrated here.

I'm retired, so no holidays. And I worked in an industry for 42 years where holidays were not a day off, just another work day except I had to find alternate child care, and many places were closed whose services I needed that day.

I think we are having two different conversations!

We normally don't celebrate Cindo de Mayo (though I LOVE Mexican food and could eat it everyday), but today I'm going to make some enchiladas that we really like with guacamole, spicy refried beans, and Spanish rice. Super easy to throw together and feels festive. I like making stuff at home because, to me, it tastes just as good as eating out and I know everything that is going into it.

We don't really drink at home and usually just out at restaurants/Disneyland lol, so no margaritas here today.

From what I understand, it is more celebrated in the US than it is in Mexico. So it is pretty much a US day to celebrate by eating tacos and drink beer/margaritas.

I'm not sure I'd call it "celebrating" but we usually have some sort of Mexican dish (usually NOT Tex-Mex) and Margaritas for supper on Cinco de Mayo. We didn't do that this year, though, as DD graduated with a master's degree in social work today (ooops, I guess now, technically, it was yesterday!). The festivities started with a departmental reception at 2pm with graduation at 4pm. After the ceremony (which took 3 hours) we took DD, her DH, and two of their closest friends out for dinner. After dinner, DH and I went back to campus to see her name on "The Big Board"- UMaine runs all the graduates names (both grad and undergrad) on the scoreboard at the football field. It's been running for a week now but tonight was the first chance I had to stay and watch for her name, although I've been driving by all week. It's now official: DD's name was on the Big Board and she has her master's degree in hand. So proud of her and her hard work!

We didn't end up celebrating Cinco de Mayo, because we ended up going out to dinner last night (not even to a Mexican restaurant because they all looked really crowded). I would have loved to have tacos at home or something instead.

I grew up in California and totally love good Mexican food. So on Cinco de Mayo we usually go out to a Mexican restaurant, order in from one, or I make a Mexican dish myself (not my preference). On this May 5th, I had enchiladas for lunch and a couple Coronas with dinner. In our younger years, it was always a great reason to attend Happy Hour and drink Mexican beer and margaritas. After we became parents, it was even more special.

Our 24 year old daughter was born on Cinco de Mayo. So we ALWAYS celebrate! She’s a fun loving party in a person, and her birth date perfectly suits her!

Favorite thing about Cinco de Mayo? Sink-o de drink-o. popcorn::

[oh, and I went to Chipotle to get my mom some lunch...:teeth: ]

Sadly, this is not a celebrated day for us. (it used to be)

Our dear friends and neighbors lost their 2.5 year old daughter on May 5th. She had ATRT, a very fast growing brain tumor (she was a very happy and normal little girl until 24 hours prior to her death.) To say everyone was blindsided would be an understatement. This will now always be a somber day for us. :sad1:
I have lived your pain. My 6-year-old granddaughter woke up in the middle of the night with an asthma attack, went into cardiac arrest, and died on the sofa. There is no elixir for the pain. And time does not heal the wound. But one thing I have learned is that I will celebrate her life and try not to put too much attention on her death. I prayed a small prayer for your friends.

I'm going with other. We don't celebrate Cinco de Mayo per say, but it's my mom's birthday, so we celebrate ON Cinco de Mayo. :)

Thank you. And I am terribly sorry for the loss of your granddaughter.
