We sometimes celebrate Cinco de Mayo, but we this year, we have other stuff going on today. (We did have Mexican food on Tuesday, though, so that kind of makes up for it.)

No celebration here. And no Mexican food today, that I know of We do like Mexican food though, have it several times a month.

Thanks for a good week of @slo polls, Sandy. Have a great weekend, weather sounds good.
Thank you for the Thanks Dan :goodvibes
The Chicago area is finally going to have a nice weather weekend - it's about time - LOL!!
I hope you have a great weekend too :cool1:
Sadly, this is not a celebrated day for us. (it used to be)

Our dear friends and neighbors lost their 2.5 year old daughter on May 5th. She had ATRT, a very fast growing brain tumor (she was a very happy and normal little girl until 24 hours prior to her death.) To say everyone was blindsided would be an understatement. This will now always be a somber day for us. :sad1:
Oh my.....how devastating :sad1:
My prayers are with everyone that grieves for this precious little girl.
😱

I don’t understand? Tacos on Tuesday. Enchiladas today.
:rotfl:
My husband would agree with you 100%
I like Mexican food, but not enough to have it twice in one week - LOL!!
He could eat it every day.

I don't really think about it much. It seems like a lot of people go out and drink Margaritia's and such, but that's not my thing. I might have Mexican food, but I also might not. I won't go out of my way to do something special.

Not something we celebrate, though I do like Mexican food once in a while.

Yeah, it’s a real but very minor holiday.

In the US it was “invented” by the beer companies to increase sales, no other reason.
I had never heard of it until maybe 15-20 years ago. I was misinformed and thought that it is Mexican Independence Day, which I now know is a separate holiday in September.

It’s a common misconception. Even today if you’d ask 100 random Americans on the street, a large majority would guess that it’s Mexico’s biggest holiday.

I suppose in Mexico Cinco de Mayo is comparable to Patriots Day in the US. Big in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, but virtually ignored elsewhere.

We normally would have Mexican food tonight but we have a 50th wedding anniversary party to go to so we will still be celebrating just not Cinco de Mayo.

I googled it -

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla where the Mexican army defeated the French during the U.S. Civil War on May 5, 1862.

Cinco de Mayo History

Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day, a popular misconception. Instead, it commemorates a single battle. In 1861, Benito Juárez—a lawyer and member of the Indigenous Zapotec tribe—was elected president of Mexico. At the time, the country was in financial ruin after years of internal strife, and the new president was forced to default on debt payments to European governments.

In response, France, Britain and Spain sent naval forces to Veracruz, Mexico, demanding repayment. Britain and Spain negotiated with Mexico and withdrew their forces.

France, however, ruled by Napoleon III, decided to use the opportunity to carve an empire out of Mexican territory. Late in 1861, a well-armed French fleet stormed Veracruz, landing a large force of troops and driving President Juárez and his government into retreat.

I went out for Mexican food on wednesday as I didn't want to wait super long for a table today. The place I went to had a sign out front saying they weren't taking reservations on Cinco de Mayo and that your entire party needed to be present to be seated.

I don't have any plans today. I did buy a margarita wine cocktail thing that I'll enjoy tonight.
I always thought it had something to do with a battle w/ the French?
It does. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory against the French army in the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

I don't celebrate. I think in the US it's just a reason to drink, which I really don't do. I don't like Mexican food much either, most of the restaurants near me are Colombian anyway. I'm also not comfortable with boiling down Mexican culture into having a margarita and eating a taco on Cinco de Mayo, if I'm being honest.

Not celebrating, Friday is pizza night for us. Besides my wife doesn't like Mexican food.

We don’t celebrate. Not sure what we are having for dinner tonight. Tomorrow is my husband’s birthday so we celebrate that tomorrow instead.

A made up holiday designed to sell beer.
It marks a minor victory by Mexico over France in a war Mexico ultimately lost.
