My wife and I have started planning a 3 week round the country trip next sumer. While it is not Disney related, I have a couple of questions that I am hoping some of the wonderful people here on the Camping board can help with. We have a 2 year old cocker spaniel that we think we would love to take with us. The only problem I keep coming up with is that we will be tent camping for 90% of the trip and if we go into a place during the day I do not want to just leave him in teh car to overheat. She is a school teacher so we are going in the middle of summer. I have done this before and know how hot it can get. Does anyone have any suggestions for him in a car situation. Also we had considered renting an RV. Only a small one since it is just the 2 of us. Does anyone know of a place to rent one for reasonably cheap in the NE. Thanks again for any help you can provide.

I love my dog, she goes just about everywhere with us.

But, in the situation of driving and tenting situation I think the pup would be safer at home.

I would never leave a dog in a car alone under any circumstances.


Check with local RV dealers for rentals or suggestions. You will either have to tow a small car or take the RV sight seeing with you. So you will need one with a generator that will keep the A/C running for the pup.

You might if you can think about a pop up if you can tow. Some of these can be had very reasonable. I would not leave my dog in my car in the summer. Not to scare you at all but we went camping in South Florida and had our dogs in our Fifth wheel and lucky for use we got a late start that morning the power went off at about 10 and did not come on until 5 lucky for us we were there and we changed our plans but it scare's me to think what might have happened if we wern't there. We leave emergency number with the rangers know in case something like that happens.

Years ago we traveled with 2 dogs that would bark the whole time we were away from the camper. To keep peace with our camping neighbors we would board our dogs at a kennel on the days we went away. The dogs got to spend the nights with us and this allowed us freedom too. This might work for you too.....it would require some research finding a kennel. We only used ones that were vet operated.

Thank you for the responses. Believe me I am completely unwilling to just leave our dog in the car. I am very much against that. I will keep looking and thinking and if anyone has any other ideas that would be great. I really don't want to board him for 3 weeks and may see if I can get some friends to work together for us to take care of him. Thank you so much for you ideas so far. I knew if anyone would have some it would be you guys.

We had to leave our Lab in our van one night, it was cool out and I thought it would be ok. I checked on him and took him for walks before we went to bed The next morning we got up early to leave and when I opened the drivers door I couldn't believe it. Barney our lab was sitting in the passenger front seat looking at me and my drivers seat was in shreds I couldn't believe he ate my seat down to the frame, he just looked at me as if to say, Go ahead leave me again, I dare you. I loved that dog and later we had a good laugh about it.

another option instead of boarding... we have a "pet sitter". she comes to the house twice a day and takes care of all the animals. only a couple of dollars more than we would pay to put just the two dogs in a kennel. We have 2 dogs, 2 cats and a guinea pig The animals get to stay in their own environment and I know they are being well taken care of. Just another thought for you!
