I have a 10 year old who saw a commercial for this game. I know nothing about it. Is it too young for a 10 year old? Also, it looks like there is more than one. Which is best? What should I consider when choosing this?

No, 10 is not too young. It is marketed to tweens, so that is right in the game's wheelhouse. My 11 year old asked for the new one for Christmas, that is Skylanders Swap Force.

You have to buy the Starter Pack, which comes with a "portal" that you plug into the console, and then 3 characters. From there, they sell additional characters separately, which I assume is where the real money-making is done.

It's a fun game, I have watched them play it on occasion but haven't played it myself.

I am not sure if you can get any of the previous games used for cheaper, but there is also Skylanders Giants (last year's version) and Skylanders Spyro's Adventure (initial version, 2 years old). But you will probably want to get the starter pack for whichever version you end up going with.

Swap Force just came out, so I would reccomend that.... but you can get some great deals on the characters from Spyro and Giants (The past 2 games), and they work with Swap Force too!

10 is not to young.. it is geared to the 6-12 year old crowd I think... so he will love it.

I was leery last year (My boys were 5!) but all their friends were talking about it, and we ended up getting them a starter pack for Christmas last, and they still play with it..(As is their 13 yr old step brother) this year Swap Force is under the tree.

Skylanders game is perfect for a 10 year old.

There are 3 versions out now.

1)Spyros Adventure
2)Skylanders Giant
3)Skylanders Swap Force

The spyros adventure is on it way out and being retired shortly, from what I have heard from different retailers, Game Stop, Toys R Us and Wal-Mart associates. Now this is what I was told and should be taken that way.

Swap force is the newest version out.

You have to purchase the starter pack which includes, game, portal of power and 2 or 3 figures. Other figures can be purchased there are singles and 3 packs to add to the game, as you advance.

I would get the Swap force as it is the newest out. Toys R Us does have some deal on it right now. So I would check it out.
