Skipper Canteen questions

I booked Skipper Canteen for lunch for our upcoming trip because the menu looks interesting to us. I know the reviews early on were pretty lackluster, so I'm wondering if the food quality or service has improved since opening. Also, are they still serving the specialty drinks in those copper mugs? And, do you get to keep the mug?

We ate there during spring break and really enjoyed it. Didn't have a copper mug, so I don't know about that.

My service and food was the best in the Magic Kingdom. Not sure where the bad reviews come from. The waiters do carry over the jungle cruise feeling so be prepaired for tacky jokes and things like calling tea mud water and sprite chemicals.

Skipper Robert performed a Jungle Cruise Fireworks Show for us. It basically meant he threw straws in the air but it was hilarious.

Another menu change? They just made changes a couple of weeks back and they are changing again?

I asked on Sunday and was told the restaurant will always have seasonal changes so the menu will never be set in stone.

I enjoyed it so much I ate there twice when I went. I did the Skip's Mac and Cheese and it was amazing! The bread is a little odd but I liked it (just can see why others might not prefer it) I'd highly recommend it although I went BEFORE the menu change so not sure if it's going to get better/worse now.

1) No major change in food quality or service . . . still mediocre-to-poor
2) Those "copper" mugs are not copper, they are simply colored tin.
. . . IMHO, a total lie regarding it being a "mule"
. . and, YES, copper does make a HUGE taste difference in "mules"

Honest question, is there anything on property you like? I saw your C rating for Tiffins and was shocked by that. Nothing was mediocre to poor about my food or service.

1) Certainly, there are eateries we like.
. . . there are also eateries at which we were disappointed
. . . there are a few eateries we even recommend people not visit (but, just a very few)
. . . even at low-rated eateries, there might be dishes we enjoyed and would recommend to others
2) When rating anything, one must be consistent and use a standard, or the rating(s) mean nothing. *
3) I frequently get an email saying my "C" rating should have been an "A".
4) But, when people do a rating, such as a "A", I need to ask for their standard.
. . . are they comparing restaurants equally?
. . . are they using bias or their "Disney Enthusiasm" and giving extra points because of such?
5) As an example, few people could argue against an "A" for service and an "A" for food quality at Victoria & Albert's.
. . . thus, should Tiffins get an "A" for service or quality?
. . . if it gets a "B", where would one place service and quality of California Grill compared to V&A or Tiffins?
6) Once again, one needs to rate everything to a standard.
. . . If one gives Tiffins an "A", a reader might believe the individual rating item (service, quality, etc) would rival V&A.
. . . If one based their dining selection based upon that rating, one would be disappointed if expecting V&A levels
7) So, using such a rating standard, where should Tiffins be placed?
. . . was Tiffins service equal-to or superior-to V&A?
. . . was Tiffins food equal-to or superior-to V&A?
. . . was Tiffins seating comfort equal-to or superior-to V&A?
8) Trying to remain consistent and objective can be tough, and often creates differing opinions.

* Not quite in the same realm, but this is a major complaint of school systems and why people try to build a uniform standard. How can someone determine the level of learning if different school systems and/or different teachers use different grading/rating standards?

I love the Skipper Canteen. I didn't notice when I went there 3 times the week it opened that there were any issues and I didn't notice any issues when I went there last month. I've had a specialty drink there numerous times, but never in a copper mug.

Thanks for the information about the copper mug raddisneyfan. Maybe they were just using those copper colored mugs when the restaurant first opened. I remember reading fairly early on that guests were disappointed that they had run out of them. Maybe they just never re-stocked and are now serving the specialty drinks in regular mugs/glasses???

I for one was not impressed with the Skipper Canteen. Had dinner reservations first week in April. I did not particularly like the limited menu options. I would be guarded if asked to recommend.

We loved Skipper Canteen! In fact, we went twice during our week at WDW.

This is despite the fact that we've become a bit of food snobs over the past few years (we ate mostly at signature restaurants; we found most of the non-signature table service food to be extremely disappointing or, in the case of a few, inedible. We also found a few signatures to be very average). Certainly, it's not the best cuisine in the world; but it is IMHO fantastic for Magic Kingdom and for most in-park dining--especially given that it is not priced like a signature restaurant.

The copper mugs were not available during the last week of May; there was a rumor on these boards that they were being discontinued permanently.

Thank you, @bemccar1. I agree that some of the non-signature places are not very good, especially the buffets. Good to know about the mugs. I won't count on getting one of those.

Thanks for the information about the copper mug raddisneyfan.

1) My country club serves Moscow Mules, and they are G-R-E-A-T after a round of golf.
2) A famed American Iron Chef is our executive chef (He is also a consultant in one of our restaurants . . . we have major interest in two).
3) I have had Moscow Mules with and without copper mugs.
4) There is a definite difference.
5) Never (REPEAT: NEVER, NEVER, NEVER) have a Moscow Mule without a true copper mug !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6) Fake copper mugs do not have the same taste, as they do not react with the ingredients.
