Sketching at Disney

So I'm thinking of bringing a sketch book on my next trip in April for 2 reasons...
1. It will give me something other than watch films and panic on the long haul flight from the UK (no fear of flying as such but high general level of anxiety and I do get v claustrophobic)
2. We are staying for the first time at (drum roll pls) AKL! Only my second deluxe resort and it's always been a dream as I'm a little animal obsessed. (Ask my 4 dogs, 2 rats and hamster)

So does anyone else sketch / paint at DW? I know days are pretty packed but it's the most magical place on earth!

I'm VERY surprised that my girlfriend doesn't sketch at Disney. She does not like certain rides so she waits for my son and I to ride. She is an artist and art teacher who is always sketching.

Maybe suggest it? 😊 Disney isn't necessarily a place people think of when they think of sketching I suppose!

I will! We leave Friday for Disney. BTW, she would be the one who takes the water colors. She made her own water color "set" (for lack of better word) in al Altoids tin so it was smaller and more portable.....did I mention she is an artist?

I'm 100% the same in fact I just 'restocked' my watercolor pack. It's really nice that you support her art though, many people view it as wasted time. I hope your whole family has a lovely trip!

I love her art. Thanks and I hope you have a great trip too.

I’m bringing my iPad Pro/Pencil 2 to sketch in the parks. I use Procreate and 53 paper plus have a paper-like overlay so that the screen feels more rough than the slippery, squeaky glass.

Although - it sounds like Disney is removing benches around the parks so there aren’t as many places to sit?

That’s a bummer because I was hoping to do some sketching by the castle on the benches in the rose garden.

That would be a shame if the benches were gone, sitting on the floor is not ideal!
I like the different style of bringing the iPad, I don't have anything like that myself, do you have any examples of the sort of drawing you have done?

I realize I don’t on my phone - it’s all on my iPad. Nothing Disney, mostly camping - lake, heron, turtles, sunrise, etc. My spirit animal is Bob Ross (happy trees!)

I got into it by the great tutorials on YouTube for procreate - the pencil 2 is so responsive it’s seamless. You can also pick a canvas size that is similar to a sketch pad size - I like A3.

Zooming in and out is easy - and erasing is easy too - with a tap on the side of the pencil. And having the “paper” screen saver mimicks a more paper like feel.

I’ve been waiting a while to find a tablet that has the Wacom (the best name in electronic artistry) performance but portable and multitasking as well in a decent price range.

The 2018 iPad Pro paired with the Pencil 2 truly provides the experience I imagined 10-15 years ago.

I’m hoping to sketch in Harbor House (I really like the zen atmosphere of the second floor), by the Haunted Mansion, the new Skyliners, and on TSI looking over to Frontierland. I haven’t been in WDW for 10 yrs so I’m pretty excited to capture the quiet places I’ve enjoyed while looking at the Skyliner as this cool new transport, like when the monorail began. Plus, we’ll be at Fort Wilderness camping - so lots of nature around.

I’m pretty amateur - and I’ve found the iPad Pro is easy and addictive for being more creative and feeling comfortable enough to dash off a picture when I get inspired.

Camping at FW is ideal for a bit of mindful sketching. That's why this only occurred to me as we are staying at AKL.
I don't think anything like this is in my budget atm but I'll definitely keep am eye out!

I’m in the process of setting up an afternoon safari - Wanyama Safari - for us to take pictures and spend the day at AKL.

It’s awesome that you are staying there!

We are planning two days in AK just to see the animals, do all the exhibits and the KS multiple times (morning, afternoon and just before sunset - since you see different animals at different times).

My friends are surprised - since they think AK is a half day park at best - and it’s the first one we are heading to after arriving at the Fort.

Of course, I go to the National Zoo and Baltimore Aquarium every chance I get, with family that volunteer there. So a wildlife preserve is a main attraction to me!

I just remember not having a lot of benches located within sight level of the exhibits in AK. I think my plan will be to take pictures - either with my phone or my older tablet - and use those pictures as reference to sketch on the iPad Pro.

The Nomad Lounge was not open when I was there last - but it looks to have comfy seats to relax in and sketch, have a drink or appetizer. Of course, AKL has great places too - but looking at places in AK - Nomad Lounge looks quiet and relaxing.

I think I may steal your Nomad lounge idea!
Ditto, this is the first trip we are taking where we are not doing a combined magic kingdom epcot first day. Scary stuff lol! I've got an old Panasonic lumix I usually take but I'm hoping to upgrade and downsize before the next trip, I am incapable of putting the camera away in case I miss something and as a heavy bridge camera carrying it around my neck for 14 hour days was no joke! :crutches:
