Size 1 diapers too big for newborns?

You will need Newborn diapers. My advice is to buy them from a store with a friendly return policy :) and DON'T open the packages until you know for sure what size they will wear. If you buy too many newborns (hard to imagine) you can then return them for the size 1's. Only one or two brands have the little cutout for the umbilical, the rest fold over. Of course, the special cutout raises the price considerably, and IMO was not worth it. I used store brand diapers and those worked for me.

DD1 was 8 lb 8 oz and wore Newborn diapers for about 10-14 days.

DD2 was 10 lb 5 oz and went straight into size 1's at the hospital. I was able to return the newborns I had purchased since I didn't open them ahead of time.

I wouldn't buy preemie diapers, if the baby needs preemie size, they are still usually in the hospital until a newborn fits.

Remember, babies should have 8 wet diapers a day.

So you're talking at least 112 diapers a week for twins. Having a case or two on hand when they're born is a good idea :thumbsup2

I remember in the sleep-deprived days of new motherhood, there was no way I could count diapers, so I just took 8 out of the package every morning. As long as they were gone by the next morning, I knew everything was okay :)

Running out of diapers is way worse than running out of toilet paper. We never understood those people who were in the gorcery store at midnight buying a pack of diapers. Stock up - they aren't perishable and you KNOW you're going to use them! We always went for more when we opened our last case (we bought them at Toys R Us by the case, because that was the cheapest option - but that's been 6 years ago now...so things may have changed). We tried to keep at least three cases in the house at all times. I felt like we were "low" if we ever got down to one case.

Good for you for thinking about this ahead of time :)

And while you're doing advanced planning, go ahead and install your car seats and then have a professional check them to make sure they're in tight enough :)

I was going to place a large order online this week.

I just can't decide now - Premie or newborn? I guess I really won't know until they're born and we know how big they are.

My biggest was almost 9 pounds, and still started out in newborn. My twins were about 6 1/2 pounds each, and premie would've been nice - get at least one package, since you can always exchange for bigger.

Most twins that are close to term weigh between 4 and 6 pounds. I know there are exceptions to every rule.

Don't get stressed. Buy the newborns. We use those at the hospital even for little guys. The tabs will stretch around to get a more comfortable fit. Our hospital doesn't even stock preemies (we don't provide care for the 1 and 2 pounders).

Congrats on your babies!!! Enjoy them.

When our twins were born we used premie diapers. They were 4lbs 13oz. and 5lbs 2oz. The newborn ones swam on them.
You will go through soooo many diapers in the beginning. They were peeing and pooping machines!!!!!!!

pampers swaddlers newborn dont have the space for the cord cut out anymore! (at least theses last 2 packages i bought didnt!)

my son is a week old and 8 lbs 6 ounces and the 1-2 box (8-12 pounds) i got at sams club is huge on him....so he is still in the swaddler newborn that goes up to 10 lbs

yep, too big. and you'll be surprised at how big the newborn diapers can seem on smaller babies! I only had smallish babies. my singleton was 6lb3oz, the twins were 5lb10oz and 4lb10oz. also, preemie clothes, if you have a few, will fit much, much better, than normal newborn sizes. my twins were lost in regular newborn sizes. its really funny to think they were ever so small, because the clothes and diapers were so teeny.

make sure you make a stamp of their feet in their baby book if you think of it. its amazing how teeny they are, and how much they grow that first year.

eta: for the diapers, I highly recommend pampers swaddlers, particularly if you have boys. my boys peed right thru/around any huggies we every bought, pampers were the only ones that seemed to do what they were supposed to.

Do they sell any premie packages bigger than 20? That's all I can find so far.

How many premies would you recommend I buy, if they're sold 20 to a box?

The weight given on the diapers is accurate. Go by that.

my kids all went thru at least 10 diapers a day, so twins were at least 20 a day. try target for a larger size...can't remember if they come in larger quantities or not. I'd buy at least two weeks worth. if you will be around, or somebody, you can always get more. and oh how you'll need more! I caution about overbuying at first, just in case your kids have a weird reaction to the diapers.

also, for wipes, make sure to get unscented ones, especially at first. the perfumes can do a number on little babies.

That's another reason why I would recommend premie diapers. We tried folding the newborn ones but they would pee thru their clothes on top.

Boom - go buy 4 packages of the preemie size - you'll have 80 diapers, so you'll have enough for about 5 days per baby at 8 diapers per day. You can always go and buy more of these if you see that they are likely to fit pretty well for more than the first few days. On the other hand, if they are small on the babies, you can still use them up. Remember, you can always diaper them and put some sort of pants over them. Believe me, the baby will pee or poop right on schedule even in a too-small diaper, and then you've used up another one. And in about two hours, the baby will help you use up another one.

Get about 10 or 12 packages of the newborn size. That's 200 diapers, 100 per baby, so enough for about 12 days at 8 diapers a day. By the time you are using these, you'll have a real baby instead of a fantasy one, one you'll know much better what size to buy.

But I'd have some of each on hand, anyway.

PS - "Going out for diapers" is a time-honored tradition for new dads, who often find they want a little bit of a break from the new routine at home. Many a dad has taken a 20 or 30 minute break to go get diapers. You might want to save that as an option for later!!!!

Pampers Swaddlers for newborns are great! My dd was 7lbs 3oz when she was born and we used the Swaddlers for at least a month or two. When my dd was born we tried everything and Pampers Swaddlers were the best...then we moved onto the Pampers Cruisers.....I know they are more expensive than the other brands, but they really worked better for us.

DD was 4 lb 12 oz when she was born, and she needed premie diapers for several weeks. She is in newborn size for a long time.

In our area, it isn't easy to find premie diapers in local stores. Keep it in mind once the babies are born. If they are really small, you might want to order some more premie diapers in case you think they may be in them for a long time.

Don't know if this has been said yet but be careful how many diapers and wipes you buy ahead of time. My dd had a really bad reaction to Pampers diapers and could only use Huggies wipes. Anything else made her break out in a horrible rash.:guilty: If we'd bought a bunch ahead of time we'd have just wasted our money. As it was we probably gave away 2 packages.
