INTROS AND TRAVEL DAY!
Hello! And welcome to my first trip report!

I don't know if admitting it's my first trip report is a help or a hindrance to the number of readers I will get, but I can say that I did quite a bit of binge reading of reports here before our trip, so hopefully I got the gist of it and can provide some fun reading.

My name is Becky and I'm from North Carolina. The traveling crew consists of my husband, James, our 18-year-old son, Alex, 14-year-old daughter, Emily, and myself. This is our 6th trip to Disneyworld, the first one being in 2007. We all love  Disney and were eagerly anticipating this trip. Here's a picture of us from this trip. I decided to purchase Memory Maker again this trip and was glad I did. We got Photopass pictures in many locations that we hadn't before, and we absolutely love the ride photos and Magic shots (well, I think I'm the only one who loves the Magic shots, but the others are kind enough to play along).

Our trip was from July 15 - July 21, staying at the Dolphin. Our previous stays have been off-site (twice), Pop Century, and Port Orleans Riverside (twice). We really love POR, but we wanted to try something different AND if possible we wanted to get 2 rooms because with the kids getting older we feel a little cramped in one room for a week. Alex is a light sleeper and gets aggravated at my husband's snoring (so do I but I guess I have to put up with it ) and Emily, well she's a teenage girl and needs her bathroom time in the morning (and afternoon and night) and since it takes Alex all of 3 minutes to get ready to go anywhere, she pretty much had a bathroom to herself.

So, I was able to get a pretty good rate on 2 rooms at the Dolphin through Costco. Yes, Costco! Crazy, huh? It was 6 nights with two resort-view rooms, and 5 day park hoppers. I was really looking forward to being in the Epcot resort area for the first time.

TRAVEL DAY, PART 1

Our flight on July 15 was scheduled to leave Raleigh/Durham at around 8:00 a.m. so we planned to leave the house no later than 6:00. This was potentially difficult as we are not historically early risers, but we managed to get out the door just a few minutes after 6. Arriving at the airport we were planning to park in the remote parking area and take the shuttle to the terminal, but at the last minute we decided to park in the lot right beside the terminal, even though it cost twice as much per day. This would prove to be a great decision. When we made it inside the terminal, the line for baggage check was really long. We don't travel by plane much, but my husband had recently gone on a business trip and knew that if we didn't check our bags at least 45 minutes before departure time, we would have to check them at the gate, which meant taking the bags through security, which meant dumping any liquids over the approved amount (i.e., the majority of my daughter's and my toiletries). (Alex, by the way, had nothing to worry about as he managed to pack 6 days worth of clothes and his laptop into one backpack that he carried on the plane.) We got in line and nervously watched the time ticking away, with James nervously debating (and driving us crazy) the whole time whether we should move to curbside check-in (although that line kept getting longer with every passing minute too). We finally made it to the front of the line. My husband asked the lady behind the counter how much time we had to spare and she said 1 minute. :scared1: Yes, one minute later and our first stop in Orlando would have been to Walgreen's for more face cleanser and toner. Luckily we avoided that little detour.

Next we made our way to security, thinking we were home free now that our bags were safely on their way to the bottom of the plane. We got through security smoothly and started making our way to the gate. After just a few steps we heard the final boarding call for our flight! So we started running towards the gate. Luckily it wasn't too far down and as we got to the already empty waiting area, the check-in guy asked if we were the Green party. I replied yes and asked if they were waiting for us. He said yes, but that in 5 more minutes they would have left us. :scared: We were really squeaking in under the wire today!

We boarded the plane, sheepishly found our seats and got comfy. As I mentioned, we don't fly much and neither Alex nor Emily are big fans of flying, so we were glad it was going to be a relatively short flight. After about 1.5 hours, we were descending into Orlando. Emily got this great picture of our first hidden Mickey.

Isn't that cool? :cool2:

On our way to get our baggage, we made a quick stop for our first Disney pictures.

(Sorry so blurry, James took that one. :rotfl:)

Of course the one I took of him is clear as a bell. :thumbsup2

After baggage claim it was time to pick up our rental car. Before we decided on the Dolphin we were toying with the idea of take DME from the airport for the first time (we usually rent a car at the airport), but DME is not available for Dolphin guests, unfortunately, so off to Budget we went. We hopped in our lovely red Hyundai Elantra and were on our way to the Disney Bubble! :drive:

Next up: Arrival at the Dolphin. Are there any upgrades in our future?!?

Airports always stress me out no matter what, so I would have probably died if I had stepped into my terminal and heard my final boarding call :scared1:

Following!

Yay, my first follower! :welcome: Thanks for joining in!

Joining in, your airport experience made me stressful, lol!

:welcome: and thanks for reading! It actually happened too quickly for me to get too stressed at the time, but thinking about it now kinda freaks me out!

:welcome:Thanks for following! I realize now how lucky we were to actually make it. Hopefully we learned our lesson for next time!

Oof that would stress me out! Also you have me thinking for trips in the future... my kids are still little but I can definitely see where two rooms would come in handy as they get older...

Joining in! Ack, what a stressful airport experience! When I was in college I went on vacation with my friend and we were shopping in the terminal, looking at the departure time on our tickets and assuming we had plenty of time to get on the plane... until they called for us over the PA system and we had to run for it and we’re the last ones on. Whoops!

Looking forward to reading all about your trip!

Following along, glad you made it!

Me too! I appreciate it even more after the fact! Thanks for following!

Yes, for our trip in 2016 we had one room at POR and my then 16-year-old son slept on the Murphy bed. We realized then that our time in one room was probably limited. :rotfl:

It was definitely alarming hearing that announcement! I guess I don't really travel enough by plane to be familiar with how the timing works. All's well that ends well, I guess! ::yes:: Thanks so much for joining in! :wave2:

I’m in.
That is my worst nightmare- I need to be everywhere early and honestly I couldn’t cope running that late.
I’m sure my kids would love it.
Last trip they were 18 and 14 so looking forward to seeing how your trip went.

Following.....we had an airport experience similar to yours. Not me and DH but DS2 and family...we were all on the plane waiting for the 3 of them. I was in tears. Just as they were going to shut the door they came running down. Needless to say. Everyone on plane. Hated us...

:welcome: The weird thing is, I think we thought we were doing OK on time when we left the house, and only got a little concerned in the bag check line. Little did we know! :confused3 Sometimes ignorance is bliss!

Luv the report❤️

:thanks:

 Nothing like a last minute entrance! I don't think we had any haters, but we did feel pretty lucky!

RESORT ARRIVAL AND BOARDWALK

When I left off, we were on our way in our spiffy rental car to the Dolphin! When we started seeing signs for tolls ahead, hubby and I were a bit surprised because even though it had only been 2 years since our last trip, we did not remember any tolls! We didn't have exact change, which was OK for a couple of the tolls (I think there were 3 altogether?) but on one of the exits the only choice was exact change or you had to mail in the payment later (there was no human toll taker). I think it was $1? We were scrounging for coins in my purse, our pockets, but couldn't quite get to $1 (pathetic, I know, but you never have it when you need it, right?) but then my husband thought to look in the "rejected coins" tray of the toll machine and lo and behold there were a couple of dimes in there to give us just what we needed. The pixie dust was starting already! :wizard:

Of course we were thrilled to pass under this:

Sorry about the finger. I was rushing to get a good picture (and apparently failed). :o

Shortly thereafter we pulled up to the Dolphin. James, Alex, and Emily stayed in the car while I went to check in. It was early (before noon) so I knew that our room probably wouldn't be ready, but I wanted to let them know we were there. There was no line, so I went right up to the counter and met Ronney. All of the employees there wear nametags that have their "passion" identified on them. Ronney's passion was "positivity" and I could tell right away that he was very friendly and outgoing. Other passions that I saw on nametags throughout the week were "chocolate," "fine wine and craft beer," and of course "Disney." There was quite a mix. I think I liked Ronney's best. :thumbsup2 About a week or so before our arrival, I had sent a request to the concierge for adjoining rooms on an upper floor. When I checked in, I made sure to give Ronney an additional tidbit of information, that James and I were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary (which officially occurred on July 3rd). Ronney got the hint and began looking on his computer for something special he could do for us. Bad news: no adjoining rooms. Good news: he upgraded my husband and me to a junior suite, and Alex and Emily to a fireworks view room with a balcony. :dancer:We'll take it! I was a little concerned at first about not having adjoining rooms, but Alex and Emily's was just a quick walk to the other side of the elevator from our room, and it ended up being fine. Plus they were able to give us all keys to both rooms.

Oh, let me just mention here that it was no small feat for Ronney to be able to find us those special rooms. We discovered upon check-in that we were going to be joined on the first 5 days of our vacation by approximately 1900 conference-goers staying and meeting at the Dolphin. (I think 1900 was the number someone told us, now that seems really large.) It wasn't that bad, but they did seem to be everywhere we turned for the better part of the week, especially the lobby during happy hour. :drinking1When they left on Thursday we could definitely tell the difference and the guests noticeably turned over from conference-goers to Disney-goers.

As expected, the rooms weren't quite ready. While we were waiting for our rooms, we had lunch at the Fountain restaurant at the Dolphin. We were not very impressed, but luckily our meals improved after that. We then headed to the Disney store at the Swan (for some reason we didn't realize there was a Disney store at the Dolphin) where Alex, Emily, and I got new Magic Bands. We had old MBs from our trip in 2016 but they were kinda dirty and we wanted to be sporting the newer design. I got red, Emily got yellow, and Alex got black. James didn't care so he stuck with his dirty purple one.

Still no room ready text, so we headed to check out the pool (we had taken our swimsuits out of our suitcases before handing them over to bell services). It was enjoyable but I was surprised at how loudly the music was blaring and it wasn't very Disney-ish music. More like a pop-rock mix. I wouldn't have minded so much if it wasn't so loud.:rockband: But we relaxed in the water for a bit (Alex and I tried the slide), James had a beer, and Alex had a virgin pina colada slushie (his 1st of at least 5 slushies on this trip).

Around 3:00 our rooms were ready so we headed up to the 8th floor to check them out.

Here's the view from the our junior suite:

We were able to look out our window and see the balcony of our kids' room.

Balcony.jpg

That's Emily standing on her balcony straight across. We didn't have a balcony, but that was fine. We could just head over to Alex and Emily's room and use theirs any time we wanted! :jumping3:

We spent some time getting settled in our rooms. Alex got right into bed for a quick nap, which was pretty much his MO anytime we were in the room. He's used to staying up and sleeping late, so we kind of had him off his schedule this week. He was a trooper, though, and kept up with us for the most part.

Our plan for the evening was to explore the Boardwalk and we had an ADR at La Trattoria al Forno for 7:15. We had never been to the Boardwalk (other than to ride by it on the Friendship Boat) so I was excited to check it out. Here's a pic in front of the hotel on our way out:

And here's a bad one of James and Emily with the Swolphin photo-op sign:

Well, they look great, but the sun wasn't cooperating.

BOARDWALK, CONTINUED

I continued this in another post because it wasn't letting me upload my other Boardwalk pictures, so let me try again. OK, for some reason it won't let me upload my pretty picture of the Boardwalk, even though I reduced the size, so you'll have to settle for this pretty picture of Emily and me trying on Minnie ears. :cutie: Emily wishes now that she had bought those rose gold ones. They do look good on her!

After a bit of walking and people-watching on the Boardwalk, we headed to La Trattoria al Forno We enjoyed the meal, although our waitress was a little dry and my chicken parmesan was a bit spicy (the waitress told me afterwards that their "gravy" is made with crushed red pepper, so beware any non-spicy lovers out there!). Emily actually had the chicken parm also and loved it, so I guess it was just me. Alex had pizza (flatbread?) and also enjoyed it, and I can't remember what James had. :confused3

After dinner it was getting dark and we were able to enjoy a whole new vibe on the Boardwalk. It was really cool with the lights, and entertainers started popping up and doing shows which was fun. Emily was terrified at the prospect at being picked to "volunteer" for a magician, though, so we didn't get too close. Alex did get picked to help with a card trick, but he took it in stride. Here's a pic as the sun went down:

Boardwalk2.jpg

And here was our view heading back to the hotel:

Fountain.jpg

That fountain continuously changed colors which was pretty cool.

Back in the hotel, Alex and I managed to find some room for ice cream from the Fountain (which proved better than the lunch we had there) and then we headed upstairs as we were all pretty tired by then. Before bed, though, we gathered on Alex and Emily's balcony to watch the DHS Star Wars fireworks. It was quite a nice view, although never having seen these fireworks in person I have a feeling we were missing quite a bit from the actual show. :scratchin It was a very nice way to end the day, though!

NEXT UP: MAGIC KINGDOM!

Great view from your room! We stayed at the Boardwalk for our last trip and seeing it in your pictures has me all nostalgic. I love the ears you tried on too!

We love the Epcot Area Resorts. It's so nice to be able to walk to Epcot and Hollywood Studios. I'm looking forward to the rest of your trip report. We are heading back in March and this will be the first time both of our kids will be teenagers.

We have never been sure about stopping at Swan and Dolphin because of their ‘undisneyness’ but love the location. Which type of room did you prefer?

Thanks for sharing your trip! Stayed at the Dolphin ?5? years ago and really liked it. (Where my DD first discovered her love of miso soup!)
