We just saw this for the first time. I don't normally do "horror" movies, but a friend thought we would like it.

My question: Did Cole know about Malcolm what Malcolm didn't find out himself until the end? (Trying to make it a little obscure in case someone stumbles into this thread...)

cole was the kid right? (hehe - haven't seen this movie in years)

I'm not sure if he knew he was dead...just that he could see dead people. He didn't come out and say "well, I can see you and you're dead"

so I'm gonna go with no...cole didn't know Malcom was dead either. But I could be totally wrong.

yep.

we saw this in the theatre when it first came out, and in the first few minutes, right after the two met, my husband leaned to me and said, I'll be X. And he was right! It would have been interesting to see the movie without knowing, but it was cool to watch for clues and see if we were right.

cole always knew when he saw dead vs live people, so yeah, I already answered that he did know all along. he made a point of saying the people didn't always know themselves and he didn't tell them.

I don't think he knew because he says he sees dead people walking around like normal people. So, I don't think he can necessarily tell who's dead or not. Some people he saw were injured or what-not so he knew they were dead. Or they were in his house when they shouldn't be. But, Malcolm "seemed" to have a good reason for being with him. Although maybe he did know since his mom never talked to him.

I'm not sure because Cole could see everyone, regardless of their condition. He could see people that us "normal" folk cannot see. OTOH, he did say he could see "those" people, which seemed to imply he was able -- somehow -- to distinguish between the two "conditions." Otherwise, how would he have known "those" people were really "those" people.

If you asked me that the first time I saw it I would say no he did not know. However just watched it last week, and I really think he did know. After all there were plenty of times that Cole and Malcolm were around others, and Cole didn't talk to him. It was only when no one was close by.

I definitely think Cole knew about Malcolm from day one. He was very hesitant to talk to him and like the above poster said he would only talk to him when not around others.

This is one of my favorite movies and as such, I have watched it several times. I believe Cole knew. Obviously Malcolm never talked to Cole's mother which would Cole would have noticed.

I believe he knew, too. I avoided him - went into the church, etc., and was hiding behind a pew before he actually started to talk to him.

really?
well i'm just stupid then.
heheheh

Me, too. Total shocker the first time I saw it. LOVED that movie.

A great way to understand what, why, and how is to watch the DVD extra where Night explains his "rules" for making sure the movie didn't screw up the twist.

The scene with the mother and son in the car ranks up there with some of the best movie scenes ever IMO. Great movie.

I agree--Cole knew, just like he "knew that the other people were also dead.

When I saw this movie the first time, I caught the "twist" right away, didn't see what the big deal about it was. I mean, the scene with the doctor's wife in the restaurant, never talking to Cole's mom, etc., I thought it was pretty clear. Son't own the DVD so I never saw the director's take on things. I still thought it was a really good movie.

Doesn't Cole say something like, "You're nice, but you can't help me." in hindsight I thought he said that meaning, "cause you're dead". I NEVER saw the twist coming until RIGHT before it was revealed. What a dunce!

Yes, he knew. Think of the scene when he 1st sees Malcolm, he is trying to run away from him. At 1st, we think it is because he is a stranger.

The scene where he is telling him how some people don't know they are dead. that was a direct comment to him. Also, it should of been a clue to the viewer. He explained how the room got cold, and everytime we saw him with Malcolm, he was bundled up.

I LOVED that movie. The ending blew me away.

I would say he knew based on his behavior.

I however did not catch it until it was revealed, didn't see it coming....duh...I am glad because it made for a great movie for me.
