I wish I was planning a trip to WDW but in the mean time
I'm planning a trip to Chicago. Anyone been to Six flags
in Gurnee, Ill? I'm looking for any info but would love to find
a map of the park. I can't seem to download it on my computer from the official web site. Any help or ideas?

Well, can't help with a map, but what would you like to know? We go every summer so I might be able to help out.

I'm not sure what to ask? I will be going with DH, and two DDs
ages 12 & 9. Our 9 year old will not be tall enough for the taller
rides. Do you have any inside info? We plan on getting there right before they open and will probably stay all day. Are any of the shows worth seeing? Can you reccomend a hotel? I was looking at the Baymont Inn which seems to be located right there.
Whne does school get out in that area? We are planning on being there early June.

Haven't been in a few years but I used to go twice a year chaperoning field trips. They used to have a deal called a Twicket where you could go back the next day at no extra charge. Don't know if it's still offered but it's worth a look. I do remember that the shows were very cold. Lockers are available for sweaters etc. You can't take food in but you can get your hand stamped and go to your car if need be. There are some great roller coasters there - American Eagle (wood), the Demon, Batman. Schools start getting out around here at the end of May - some are still in session until mid-June.

We go every year this year we'll get a season pass. They do have twickets cost about $5 to get in the next day. They have plenty of stuff for the shorter child including roller coasters. The whizzer is fun The one thing I don't like is they keep adding rides that cost extra like the bungee jump At $41 to get in you should be able to go on all the rides. They have an Imax theatre which is very good, but we usally don't see the shows It is very expensive to eat there so we don't but you can buy a refillable mug, sorry don't know the price this year The park is basically circular and once past the carasol(sp) go to the left. Every else seems to go to the right It's a fun park and usually clean but I prefer King's Island in Cincy if I can't go to WDW (unfortunately too far away) PM me if you have any other ?'s sorry but I can't tell you about hotels most school here get out in early June

I was there this past weekend with B96 (chicago radio station) listiner party. I may have the map still and can mail it too you if I find it:( There are lots of hotels and I am sure if you call six flags they can send you info on nearby hotels. mariotte(sp) is arounf there. They have the twickets i think they are $7 dollars now and $14 to use anytime during the year. You also have Gurnee mall nearby ehich is a outlet mall which I shopped till I dropped at before sixflags. Shows were not open but I always enjoyed them.

My dd is going on the 15th and I would be happy to have her bring me a map home and I would be happy to mail it to you if Jasminesmommy can't find hers.

There are a slew of hotels right in that area. Here is the website for the convention and visitors bureau for Lake County and you should find some info on there.

Hey, fellow Minnesotan....isn't ValleyFair good enough???

 :rotfl:

JUST KIDDING!!! Six Flags in Chicago is a great time....I LOVE Iron Wolf!!

Six flags has a new teritory(sp) and it has 5 new rides.2 are built 1 is almost done and 2 are still getting started but should be open by this summer. They looked pretty cool. My favorite there is my first rollercoaster ever. Demon. I still love that one.

My sister lives less than a mile from there, and we live about 35 minutes from there, so we go often.

There are lots of hotels right there, especially around the perimeter of Gurnee Mills Outlet mall which is right across the street. Baymont Inn looks pretty good from the outside, I've never been inside.

The Jewel food store on Grand Ave. & Hunt Club Rd. has discount tickets if you are interested. Just stop there on the way and save a few bucks. It's about 1/2 mile west of the main entrance.

My sister's kids go to Catholic school and they get out June 7, my kids get out June 10. Great America isn't generally THAT crowded during early June and late August, so you should be ok. Get there early and line up near the double decker carousel for the rope drop. If you like coasters, line up on the LEFT side and head straight for Superman. If you don't get on early, be prepared for a 90 minute wait at the very least, Last time we were there the wait was 2 hours.

My 8 yr. old is rather petite and she can get on a lot of the coasters, so your 9 yr. old should be fine. Their website should have the height restrictions for all rides.

FYI, Great America doesn't charge by age, they charge by height. Therefore, if your young ones are tall for their age, they may be charged the adult price. I think the cutoff for child's admission is around 52", but I'm not positive.

As far as the shows, we always stop to see the one at the Grand Music Hall. Last year it was an ice show which was great! They generally have some kind of musical revue. The almost always have a magic/illusionist show of some kind which is just so-so. The Pictoruim usually has a good IMAX type show which is no extra charge, but at certain times last year they were showing a special Michael Jordan Imax show which was $10 extra. There was never a line for that one.

If you like simulator rides (like Star Tours) don't miss the Space Shuttle ride near the front of the park. Kids generally like that.

Be prepared for expensive food that is not that great. There is a food court there that has a fairly good variety of items. The fried chicken restaurant (Aunt Fannie's??) is not good at all. They served my daughter chicken nuggets that were completely raw inside. When I brought them back they just said oh well, we'll give you more. Pizza Orleans has pretty good pizza. It's over near Orleans Square.

They have 4 different water rides, but we don't care for Splashwater Falls. You go up a hill, then come right back down. The wait in line isn't worth the short ride. The best bet is the Whitewater Raft ride (like the one in Animal Kingdom).
The log ride is fun too.

My absolute favorite coaster is the Viper in Southwest territory. It's a really smooth, fast wooden coaster. If you like the teacups at the MK, they have the same ride there only they are pottery cups instead of teacups, also in Northwest Territory. By the way, avoid the buffet in Northwest territory too. We know of several people that got ill after eating there.

That's all I can think of right now. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions. Have a great time!

Ticket prices are set by height, it is 54" and up for adult prices. Some cool rides that your DD might be able to go on... The Viper is a really neat wooden coaster, she must be 48". The same is for the American Eagle, a racing coaster. An "easy" upside down coaster is the Demon, she must be 42" for that one. There are also two kid areas, Camp Cartoon Network and Looney Toons National Park. My 9 yr old really likes both these places, he is getting too big for a lot of the rides though. At Cartoon Network area, ther is a smaller coaster that everyone can go on. My favorite place to eat at is mooseburger Lodge, near teh kids areas I mentioned above. It is VERY pricey, but my husband and I just split a burger, and it is usually enough. If you drink a lot of soda as opposed to water, it is worth it to buy the large refillable cups. I have never stayed at a hotel, so no help there. You have gotten a lot of good info from the other posters, PM me if you can think of anything more specific you want to know.

Wow - you guys are great. I am planning my first trip in ten years to Great America for this Sunday. We haven't gone with the kids yet.

The web site doesn't even mention the Twicket - I thought maybe they discontinued it.

And I can't believe it about the pricing - I didn't even focus in on this. I was initially thrilled that my just-turned-8yo was over 54" and would be free to ride whatever she wants. But now I realize that means we have to pay full price for her, and in reality she will probably be too terrified to ride the big coasters. :(

I will be staying Saturday night at the Country Inn - which is across the street and supposedly walking distance. I've had good luck at other Country Inns - I'll let you know what we think after the weekend.

I just have to laugh!!! When we started planning this trip to Chicago I remember thinking...I wish there was a web site like DIS to help me plan this trip. Then I thought I'll just ask the Community Board. I can't believe all of the info!!! Thankyou...Thankyou...Thankyou!!! You are all SO helpful!!!!
I just LOVE these boards. I just wish I was planning another trip to WDW!! Hopefully soon?!?!?!?

I'm sort of confused about the height requirement. My kids all got in as a child until 6th grade. They read books over the summer and they were always givin a child's ticket.

Great America e-mails me about twice a year.

Anyway, I don't think to many shows are open yet. They don't open before Memorial Day, but they might be open on the weekends.

The Magic Show is pretty cool.

Last year they added the SuperMan ride in which someone just fell off of in MA, but I think that is another whole story.

The park opens at 10:00 a.m. and I think it closes by 6:00 or 7:00. I think they should lower their prices if the park doesn't stay open until 10:00 like in the summer.

We are going Tuesday, May 25 with my daughters 8th grade class. Last time I did this with my oldest daughter, same class trip in 8th grade, we rode so many roller coasters, in such a short amount of time, I lost my equiliburium and had to sit for 2 hours, so I could drive back home.

Have fun, and don't compare it to WDW, nothing beats WDW.

School here gets out either on the 10th or 12th, i cant remember.
I reccomend the "Raging Bull" for u and ur 12 yr old. my 12 yr old found it fasinating! good thinking on getting there before it opens because you'll have better luck finding a parking space. I really suggest going to Pizza Orleans for lunch unless u pack a lunch. pizza orleans has the best pizza ever!:jester: The mardi gras festival is held in june, i think. there's a parade, beads and everything!:jester:
well, i hope u have a fun time!

Looks like the Superman ride at Great America is different than the one that had the accident.

This weekend the park is open 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.

And I hope they charge me a child's admission!!

OhMari, did your kids do the 600 minute reading program? If so, they always give a special kids admission ticket for that no matter what the age or size. It's different than a regular child's admission ticket.

I love the 600 Reading Minute event, though I think it was only 300 this year. My oldest has done it every year since he started school, and that is the only reason we have gone. Next year, both of my boys will be in school, so that is two free tickets! Also, for anyone with a "childs admission" look for the free ticket on Danimall's!
