Sirius subscriber growth outpaces XM

By Kenneth Li

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. <SIRI.O> on Thursday posted stronger second quarter subscriber additions than larger rival XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. <XMSR.O>, sending Sirius' shares up 4 percent.

Sirius, boosted by an exclusive deal with shock jock radio personality Howard Stern, said it added about 600,640 net new subscribers in the quarter, a 64 percent growth from the same period last year. It ended the quarter with 4.7 million subscribers, still short of XM's nearly 7 million subscribers.

XM said it added 398,000 net new subscribers, a 38 percent drop in net subscriber growth compared to last year's period curbed by new product availability. XM shares were flat in Nasdaq trade after falling as much as 5 percent before the market opened.

Oppenheimer and Co. analyst Thomas Eagan said Sirius' business continued to benefit from the "Howard Stern-effect", with fans of the ribald talk show host flocking to the No. 2 satellite radio service.

On the other hand, XM's growth has been hurt by a delay in shipment of its new handheld digital music players with built-in satellite receivers.

But Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett offered a more complicated answer that explained XM's volatile stock price on Thursday morning.

He said the difference in net new subscriber growth was actually an "optical illusion" due to the difference in the sheer size of the two satellite radio operators.

With churn, or the rate of losing subscribers at an industry average of about 2.5 percent, Moffett said XM would naturally lose more customers every quarter since it has a larger subscriber base.

"By virtue of its smaller size, Sirius loses fewer customers ... each quarter," he said. "As a result, its share of net additions will always be higher than its share of gross additions, at least until it 'catches up' to XM in sheer size."

To make up the difference, "XM has to grow more aggressively," Oppenheimer's Eagan said.

He said the gap between the number of net new subscribers each company added was approximately equal to their difference in estimated churn for the quarter.

The two companies, which are expected to post net losses for the foreseeable future, are also hamstrung by high marketing and subscriber acquisition costs, analysts have said.

Sirius shares rose 13 cents, or 3 percent, to $4.61; XM shares lost 5 cents, or less than 1 percent, to $14.44 on the Nasdaq in late morning trading.

I have been a Sirius Subscriber since last September and we bought a second receiver for my car in May. I recently bought a GM automobile and have a free three month subscription to XM. Now that I have had a chance to properly compare the two, I really believe Sirius is the better product, at least for me.

It will be interesting to watch what these two companies do in the future and if there will ever be a merger. With both posting losses, something will most likely have to happen.

I'm like you; I like Sirius better than XM. We have Sirius in my husband's BMW, and I have XM in my Tahoe. We put a Sirius receiver in our pool table room downstairs after listening to the two for a while and comparing them.

We listen to a lot of the "Classic Rock"/"Top Tracks" kind of programming, and it seems to me that Sirius puts together a better mix of songs.

I've had Sirius since December '04. I can listen to XM through AOL, but I prefer the stations on Sirius much more.

I have had XM for about 2 years now. All of you have said how you like Sirius better, but haven't said why...other than the obvious of Howard Stern, could someone fill me in on what I am missing? TIA

I have XM and I'm not thrilled with it. My kids find alternative rock stations that they like buy I can't find a good classic rock station. How is sirius on classic rock? I'm not talking oldies but goodies I'm talking Stones, Aerosmith, Van Halen and some AC DC stuff like that.

I know XM has a bigger playlist, but the music mix seems to be better on Sirius.

On Sirius there is a Rolling Stones channel. It's a special channel and I'm not sure the length of time it will be on. Those get switched out sometimes. Here's a list of rock stations on Sirius: http://www.sirius.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Sirius/CachedPage&c=Page&cid=1065475754154

Octane is one I listen to a lot. I think there are some that would work for you! DH likes the same genre of rock as you and he seems pretty pleased.

Sirius has "Classic Rewind" and XM has "Top Tracks". Both play the Stones, Van Halen, Aerosmith, AC/DC, etc. you mentioned.

I just like Sirius's choices of songs better. They seem to "flow" better - I don't know if I'm explaining it well.

Simply put, on Top Tracks, XM has the tendency to play a whole bunch of really "out there" songs that I've hardly ever, if ever, have heard of. Sirius plays more mainstream, familiar stuff on Classic Rewind that I like to listen to. At least that's what it seems like to me.

I have been wanting XM. I would probably like that - I like a lot of things that people have hardly ever heard of :thumbsup2

I've been a Sirius subscriber since 11/04. LOVE IT! In fact my 1st receiver bit the dust at the end of May and I had to go the same day and buy a new one! I didn't want to be without it!

I too love Classic Rewind and Sirius 9. Those are the two I listen to most but will turn on the 80s or 70s if I am feeling nostalgic!

WTG Sirius! Keep up the good work! :cheer2:

You have several options for classic rock on XM. There is the mentioned "top tracks" and now there is also "big tracks" which supposedly focuses more on the 80s classic period--I heard a Damn Yankees song on there today. There is also "deep tracks" which goes into more depth on the classic albums and plays rarer tracks.
XM just signed Willie Nelson, and also has Oprah, Ellen, GMA, a show with Tom Petty and a show with Bob Dylan--I don't even really like him, but he puts together a show with a theme each week, and he has some really cool selections.
The only thing I wish XM had that Siriius has is Radio Margaritaville!
I just hope if they ever do merger, I don't have to listen to Howard, because I'm a big Opie and Anthony fan--but in truth I don't fit into their demographics at all, and can only listen when the kids are NOT in the car.

Why would you have to listen? Just change the channel. That's what I would do with Opie and Anthony. ;) :teeth:

I'm a Sirius gal and I've never listened to Howard. We do use it to hear Vikings games that aren't on TV in NY. I love the Broadway channel when Seth Rudetsky is on - he gossips about the shows and performers it's like a friend is talking to you.

Out Q is also a great channel - especially the morning show and Derek & Romaine at night. NOT family friendly, but open to all. As a straight woman, I find it great entertainment.

Sirius also carries 3 NPR channels and XM has none. I like my NPR and they have weekly shows that my local channel either doesn't carry or airs at 7am.

XM did hire Bob Edwards though, who used to be on NPR. Can't say I have listened though--I know as an adult I should care about NPR, but it would make me fall asleep at the wheel. Give me music and shut up those DJs, that's what satellite radio, either one, is all about for me.

I don't have either as I am one of the strange people who usually doesn't turn on the radio or CD player while I am driving.

But - I work in the transportation industry and the majority of the Professional Truck Drivers seem to prefer Sirius over XM.

When I first looked into getting satellite I didn't see that Sirius had any Christian music channels. Are there any?

The Christian music channels are new since I subscribed, but I've been around almost five years. While I don't listen to them, I like that they try and serve many demographics. There's no need for everyone to love every channel as long as everyone loves "their" channels.

NFL channel for me.

We have XM and it's ok. I love the comedy channels for my evening commute. I rarely listen to the music stations, because I can never find a good mix on any of the stations. Either you listen strictly to way out there stuff or stuff that is way overplayed on regular radio already. I want a mix!

Gabby just bought a new Ford F-150 yesterday, so she is trying out the free 6 months of Sirius. If she likes it, we will most likely dump the XM account all together, even on my car. Maggie
