I think I have had a sinus infection. started out as a cold 3 weeks ago then settled into my sinuses for a while. I didn't go to the dr, just managed it with steam, hot compresses, and over the counter sinus meds. I am finally on the mend, although still sound awful apparantly. no more sinus pain, just a little bit of congestion in my chest and a little bit in my nose that seems to be on its way out. haven't had to take any kind of med in over a week. I have zero sense of smell or taste right now, which is annoying but I am feeling so much better I figure that will come back shortly.

my question is, everyone keeps bugging me to go to the dr. I concede I probably should have gone a couple of weeks ago, but at this point I feel 95% better and don't see the point.

wwyd?

is there a point to going to the dr at this stage?

What would I do? - Same as you: figure I'd already beat it and no sense in going now. But I'm not an expert.

Every sinus infection I've had (and there have been plenty) required antibiotics. Perhaps what you had was not an infection.

There is a complication of a bacterial sinus infection going into your brain or other areas connected with your sinuses getting infection which ends up causing complications with scarring, if indeed you have a bacterial infection.

I know a couple of people that had near brain abscesses from a bacterial sinus infection.

As PP says, you may have had just a virus and not truly a serious bacterial sinus infection if you are feeling 95% better.
