sinus infection problem..

I'm going through this right now! I have virus triggered asthma and have never been told to stay away from decongestants- why would that affect your asthma?

Thanks for the suggestions...ive tried the neti pot before and teh sinus rinses....not much luck with either....i think i might try it again though adn see what happens...it cant hurt to try again

The no decongestants is not because it affects my asthma. I have a heart arrythmia and the ingredient in decongestents can cause or worsen arrythmias.

Luckily, I am going to the doctor tomorrow because I have had to use my inhaler twice today which is not a good sign...I havent had to use it since the week after I got out of teh hospital 6 weeks ago

Unfortunately, I am limited as to which antibiotics I can use becasue I cant take Sulfa antibiotics or penicillin based antibiotics because I'm on methotrexate and I'm allergic to ceclor as well....its all crazy

I had three sinus infections in the last 4 months, including the start of one this week. This time I hit it hard right away with plain Mucinex like clockwork every 12 hours (not the one with the cough suppressant), a neti pot, and Flonase. I continued the Mucinex all week.

The second and third mornings I coughed up/blew out a ton of mucus and even though I am still nasally when I speak, it's all clear or white. VAST improvement over previous bouts when it quickly turned yellow or green.

I know how you feel. I went to the doctor on Saturday 2/13/2010 and found out that I have:

1) Ear infection
2) Sinus infection
3) Fluid in my lungs
4) Bronchits

I had to send my wife and two kids to stay until Tuesday to my parents so I wouldn't get them sick while I got my antibiotic (zithromax) in my sistem for a few days. They gave me an inhaler for the bronchitis and some over the counter stuff my the rest.

I used to get sinus infections frequently-every winter. I've tried everything-had the cat scan, tried neti pot- the last thing being very expensive steroid spray & antibiotics from an ear nose & throat dr.-still no relief. I read in a health magazine to try a few drops (like 4 or 5) of lavender oil (bought at a health food store) in a pot of water, gently boil on stove and breath it in for about 5 minutes or so daily. I have not had ONE sinus infection since trying this- I absolutely swear by it!!!! Supposedly it kills the bacteria that cause sinus infections. Whenever I can feel one coming on, I do this and it is GONE. It did take about a week or 2 the first time until my infection was completely gone. Now I just do it if I feel one coming on-and it seems to be cummulative-this winter I haven't had to do it at all yet. I hope others will give this a try- it is inexpensive and all natural & the only thing that worked for me- good luck!

I have to agree the nedi pot is great too.

I would also suggest you might want to try giving up dairy for a while too. The reason being, in some people it creates a lot of mucus. I've never allergy tested positive for a dairy allergy. However, once i eliminated dairy from my diet I could breathe a lot easier, i don't have to take the nasonex anymore, and only 1 puff of the astelin a day.

If you do have an issue with dairy, you have to get rid of all the dairy. If your still getting dairy in your bread, or processed food products, like in canned items, or pastas, when you eat out etc. Then you will still be stuffy, it took a few months to figure out some products i was eating must of had dairy in them, as i was breathing fine, at a certain thing, bam stuffed. It might be worth a shot. Its a matter of being stuffed up for like 4-6 days after eating the offending items.

I had that sinus sergery done about 10 years ago too, so i do have horrible sinus issues.

I'm sorry in advance I didn't read the whole thread. Can you take Levaquin? Have you had a CT-scan? Did they rule out Polyps?

Hope you have a productive doctor visit tomorrow!

I was just told this by a nurse as well. I put a towel over my head and the bowl to keep the steam in. You can do it just with hot water, if you don't want to buy the oils. You can also use eucalyptus oil instead of the lavender. You should breathe it in about 3 times a day.
I also get sinus infections multiple times a year and I currently have a bad one. I really hate taking antibiotics so I'm going to do everything I can to fix this naturally.

My friend recommended grapfruit seed spray to my dh and it helped him stave off a sinus infection (he has chronic allergies). We bought ours at Earthfare, a natural foods store.

Hope you feel better soon.
