Last time we visited Universal, we stayed onsite and had the benefit of EPs along with low crowd sizes. We are heading there again the week of Jan. 2-7 and won't be staying onsite this time, so no EPs or Early Entry. Purchasing the passes is out of the question after I looked at prices online - $160 each, which is a pretty good indicator of crowd predictions as well. I told our group we should probably use single rider lines as much as possible, but we've never used them before. How long is the single rider wait compared to a wait with EPs? Do most rides offer single rider? Do you miss a lot of the queue when you use single rider? Some of our group has never been, so I would hate for them to miss seeing Hogwarts and Gringotts, and we haven't yet seen Kong. Thanks for any information!

Single rider lines can vary. I have had long waits at Gringotts in single rider line (so long that I walked out). It sometimes depends on the TMs loading the ride; some don't seem to use the SR as much. You definitely miss a lot of the queue, which would be especially bad for Hogwarts. In fact, I often linger in that line and let people walk past me so I can hear all of what the characters and paintings are saying in the various rooms. I would say try to get in the Forbidden Journey ride line either early or late in the day to see the full queue. In Gringotts the bank is the most interesting part of the queue to me, you may be able to get in the regular line, see the bank, and leave. I have used it for Mummy, Transformers and Men in Black, again missing some of the queue but that's OK with me. I stayed at Cabana Bay in August so no EP and did not use EE every day. Have fun!

Copied from the unofficial guide web page -
Single-rider lines are almost always available at the following attractions: Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, Men in Black Alien Attack, Revenge of the Mummy, and Transformers: The Ride 3-D at Universal Studios Florida; and The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, Doctor Doom’s Fearfall, and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey at Islands of Adventure.

In addition, IOA intermittently offers single-rider access at Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls, Skull Island: Reign of Kong, The Incredible Hulk Coaster, and Jurassic Park River Adventure, but don’t count on them being open every day.
