Why does my female dog (chihuahua/Boston terrier mix) "hump" my cat? This my family's first dog, so I've never experienced this before. She and Bob (my cat, who's tail was lopped off when we got him) play and chase each other and get along fine. I just don't get the occasional humping (sorry for the lack of a better term).

She's trying to assert dominance over the cat. It has nothing to do with what we assume it does. Neutered male dogs do it to my neutered dog all the time (he's very submissive).

Many, many moons ago, my Pomeranian: Calvin "dominated" a stuffed animal of his....often. He sure did show that stuffed cat who was boss!! :rolleyes1pirate:

My son actually did an independent project on this topic back in grade 5 (he did NOT get to share it with his class :lmao:).

Basically it comes down to how much testosterone your female dog has. Some girl dogs have more, and some have less. The testosterone drives certain instinctive behaviors like marking and humping which we associate with male dogs.

Interestingly, it's not directly correlated with how dominant your dog is overall. Our dog is very submissive with everyone EXCEPT one of our cats. Our male cat is the one creature she gets to dominate. She leaves the other cats alone, and just focusses on him. He's her wubbie. She humps him and chews on him and basically loves on him. I assume it must feel pretty good, or she wouldn't keep doing it.

As for our cat... he mostly just lies there and takes it. If it gets too much, he'll jump up on the table.

Our dog must have a fair bit of testosterone for a mild-mannered little girly dog. She also sometimes hikes a leg into the air when she pees. :laughing:

OMG!!!! I am CRYING!!!! Hahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

You cat will likely get tired of her shenanigans and put an end to it. Hopefully, your dog won't bleed on something spendy.

This explains our dog who frequently shows dominance over her blanket because she knows she is low dog on the totem pole for everyone else in the house :lmao:. She also marks, outside, a LOT and she lifts her leg to pee. I have often wondered if she was really a hermaphrodite. :lmao:

I know this is a serious question but I am having such a good laugh. I really didn't know about this, I have had only cats.

In all honesty, posts like these make my day. Thank you all:rotfl::rotfl2:

This is off topic but I am having a problem with quick reply, I thought I was following instruction but I have been hitting the wrong icon, I am so confused:confused3:laughing:

Just click on the icon at the bottom right on each post. It is the icon of writing paper with a feather pen across it.

OMG, i found it, thank you so much. I get along on my laptop but I have to confess I don't know how to place a avatar next to my name. TKs, again.

I take my dog and my grand dogs to the dog park every day ~ some days it's like humpapalooza, LOL! It's all a dominance game to them :lmao:

my girl, yellow lab, loves fleece blankets. i made her one out of scraps i had and that lasted for about a year. that poor blanket. LOL

she's violated my blanket many times, she violated a bunch of them at my friends house. we still laugh about all her blankets and if i catch sushi humping mine, i'll try to get a pic and send it to her. :rotfl2:

We have a dairy farm. When cow is in heat, other cows who are not in heat will mount that animal. This is how we know its time artificial inseminate that certain cow.
