Silver Lake was disappointing!

Hey, everyone! I just wanted to give an update on our trip. We won an auction for Silver Lake. I have to say I was disappointed. The pics on the website show remodeled rooms, but the one we stayed in (123 in the 100 building) was not. There had been some painting done, but it was done really sloppy. It had ran down on the tiles, it looked like a child had painted it. The trim & everything had paint on it. The toilet paper holder was coming out of the wall. Where the sheetrock had been repaired, the person that mudded it didn't even sand it down to make it smooth before painting. The blind in the kitchen was dirty, not dusty, but dirty like something like cofee had been splashed on it and left. I killed a roach one night. I was not very happy. I asked to be moved b/c there was remodeling going on near me, that woke us up one morning, but they were full. Also, I hated all of the mirrors. There are mirrors EVERYWHERE. I'm not to keen at looking at myself all day long. LOL

I'm not a really picky person, but man... I was disappointed. This has been our worst villa out of the 3 we have won thru skyauction. Maybe the Hilton Grand Vacation Club just spoiled us.

Anyway... I just wanted to let you guys know our experience. I guess the one positive thing was the huge pool. The kids really liked that. Also, we had tons of room in our 2 BR.

Well, HTH.

it would be for you!:(

Although I can understand how HGVC would spoil you!!:)

Other than the yucky accomodations - did you have fun at WDW?

:sunny:

Oh I am so sorry to hear this :sad2: . I was reading your posts before you left and know how excited you were. Well, hopefully spending time in WDW helped and made up for a shabby room.

We leave in about 3 weeks for Polynesian Isles won off of skyauction and I hope that is nice. Like you said, I guess each one is different.

What's up with all the mirrors, very 70's huh :goodvibes .

Welcome back and again I am sorry you were dissapointed.

Well, I didn't let it bother me too much. We weren't in the room a whole lot anyway!! I guess for $360 for a week, I can't complain. I was amazed that alot of the staff seemed to be young people, like in their 20's. :confused3

I hate all of the traffic on 192. We really should have stayed somewhere closer to US/IOA. I didn't realize how far away it was.

OH, WELL! Maybe next time we'll get something better. My dd asked me, "Can we stay at HGVC next time?" LOL We loved that place!! Maybe I should just buy in to it!

:rotfl:

We stayed at Silver Lake a couple years ago in the older units and liked it alot. I have heard some say they are better then the newer ones..not sure but maybe they meant space wise. We liked the mirrors as it made the place seem more open and spacious..sorry you had such a bad time though

I am going to add my disappointment to yours! We were there last week also.
We were in 8302, it was in a newer building a small one bedroom. I'll say that it was newer, but my feet were so black on the bottom from walking barefoot on the ceramic floors. I could almost scrape the crud off of them. the furniture, fixtures and matteresses were of very high quality, but there were just several small issues that added up to a dissapointing stay.

The bedroom smelled musty, and it must have been bad because the windows in the room were open when we checked in. There was a full size refridgerator with icemaker. An apartment size stove and NO dishwasher.. We did have an almost fullsize stacked washer and dryer. There was a leak in the ceiling near the front door that had mold growing all around it... AND there is no bathrooms accessible from the pool area. they are expecting people, kids and who knows who to go back to their rooms to use a restroom. There are signs everywhere that say "no wet bathing suits"... duh!

BUT, we were there on an inexpensive RCI bonus week, so if you break it down by night, it was not really a bad deal, just not what I expected.

My boss is trying to sell his timeshare there and he can't even get $5k...not a good sign as they are selling them for I guess $14k or something? I think I will stick to Disney Vacation Club! :flower:

I am so sorry that you guys were not happy with SL. I'm one of the ones that really speak highly of this place. We've stayed there twice before and will be checking in again next Friday. This is our first time in a one bedroom and I'm hoping that I won't be disappointed. I know that some people do not like all the tile floors (it happened to be great for me in a wheelchair, as carpet is sometimes hard to roll on). Additionally the mirrors do get complaints alot. It's outdated to me, but does make the unit seem bigger so we just overlook it. As for the 192 traffic, we NEVER hardly get on 192 as we are usually only going to the Disney resort/park area and the location is what we like the best. Having Sherbeth Rd. and not having to use anything else but Disney's roads is our favorite thing. I've not stayed at HGVC, but always hear great things about them. Our first stay was OLCC and then the next time we were at Orbit One and we were disappointed at first, but now after 8 trips and many various timeshares (we stay a week on and a week off each trip) we see the pros and cons of each resort. Some we won't go back to, but most offer either a more posh environment or a great location so the trade offs are ok. Again, sorry it was not good for you and maybe I'll give HGVC a try soon too! Thanks for reporting.

Also as far as the resale prices..no timeshare sells for much over $5000 in that area except for the Marriotts and Hilton..DVC sells for more because Disney controls how much they will let them go for..so a Silver Lake resale for under $5000 doesnt mean anything about the place really

Just remember, like all things in a free market economy, supply and demand drive price.

Here is my "math", for what it is worth --

lots of resales and no demand = low price, bad investment
few resales and high demand = higher price, good investment

There is a reason Marriott & Disney resales sell high besides right of first refusal - it is demand. People are willing to pay the price because they get more value (or at least perceived value).

That said, I see very cheap timeshares on eBay and other sites all of the time, and they may not be a bad bargain for an individual. But, then remember maintenance fees too, which never end until you get rid of the timeshare...I'd rather pay on something with long term value.

Oh, Cheryl, what a bummer! I think you have every right to feel disappointed. Sometimes it's all the little things and they add up to a big thing.

SL is one of the resorts I would love to try sometime because of all of the good reviews it gets on here. I was thinking we would use it on a trip when we know we will be hitting the parks everyday and not spending a lot of time at the resort.

I'm sure you have been spoiled by the Hilton, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't expect a clean, neat place at SL, no matter how much you paid for it. Remember, there are owners that pay $1000 for a week here if you include their investment and the maintenance fees.

Next time you might want to try for Vistana................it's still offered on SA and we were VERY happy there.

Glad you had a good trip to WDW anyway. :wave2:
