My younger daughters each recently celebrated birthdays, and were each given two "disposable" cameras (the ones where you drop off the entire camera to be developed) to take on our upcoming vacation.

Having entered the digital age quite some time ago, it has been quite a while since I have had to deal with honest-to-goodness film in a camera. My question is this: is it safer to pack these kinds of cameras in checked or carry-on luggage? Is there, for example, a danger to the integrity of the film when exposed to x-rays? Is it safer to have the cameras in my carry-on and then take them out and put them in the little tray with all of my electronic devices? Does it really matter one way or the other???

Thanks for any help!

The X-ray scanners used for carry-on baggage use low levels of X-ray radiation that will not damage unprocessed film, but checked baggage is a different story. Just carry it on, and you will be fine.

Either way is fine. My experience is that a single trip through the xray machine is ok. We used to worry when we carried bunches of film and would go through multiple airports on multiple days.

Some airports have the new heavy duty scanners... in those places film in a checked bag will end up useless....Since you wont know if your bags will be scanned by the big dogs or not, DO NOT put them in check bags... only carry on is safe.

Thanks everyone! Into the carry-on they will go! :thumbsup2

Always carry your film on you. But usually anythung with a lower ISO than 800 is OK.
