silly lanyard question

When I sailed with Princess years ago, we were given Princess lanyards with a little clip on them and they punched your key cards and hung them on the lanyards. I had brought some of those fancy ones with the plastic windows, but we found it easier to use the princess ones because we didn't have to take the cards in and out to use them.

How does it work on DCL? Do we bring our own lanyards or do they provide? What type would you recommend?

Thanks!

Disney only "provides" lanyards for Castaway club Members (repeat cruisers) They do sell them at the snack counter at the terminal and on the ship. They have the plastic zip lock pouches.

The Key to the World cards aren't punched, but I've read where some people bring a punch for them and use the type of lanyard you've mention. It's really a personal preference.

While it used to be allowed, you can no longer put a hole in your KTTW cards. We used to do this with our KTTW cards but were told on our last trip that it would render the cards invalid for purchases.

Does anyone know the cost of these? We are going to charge back to the room and I'm sure my mom would love to use the lanyard rather than cary things and I want one too. I'm just curious as to the cost.

Don't punch a hole or you will not be able to make cabin charges.

I agree -- at the check-in desk, they punched a hole in each of our kids KTTW cards when we told them that we didn't want them to have charging privileges. However, we were told we could always go to the front desk and get a new card if we changed our minds.

Yep, first thing we do is get that hole punched in the key card of anyone under 12 traveling with us to render them useless when it comes to charging priviledges.
:thumbsup2

While I'm generally of the opinion that free is good re: lanyards for CC members (although I'm sure my DH would dispute how "free" they really are, given the cost of our prior cruises) I really don't like thick lanyards so have never used the CC ones.

Is that the kind they sell in the terminal/shops too?

For our next cruise I've been watching e-bay and trying to pick up WDW/DL CM ID lanyards for everyone to use. Those are the thin rope style I prefer and they have some really cute ones. I've almost got everyone's favorite character covered now.

I was just wondering, with the rope lanyards, how are you attaching the KTTW cards since they don't have the plastic pouches and we're not supposed to punch holes in the cards?

We have the pouches from our gift lanyards, but you can buy the same plastic pouches separately (found at most any offiice supply store) and attach them to the clip - just like they do on the CC gift lanyards.

Okay, thanks for the answers everyone! That really helps. Now, if they punch a hole in the kids ones (so they can't charge to them) can you hook them through the lanyard?

Thanks!

I also was wondering all of this. So am I understanding correctly that the lanyards on the ship do not come with a plastic pouch?

I was able to pick up some of the plastic pouches at Walmart in the office supply isle like in cats mom's photo however I really wanted a zipper pouch. Anyone know where to pick up one of these?

Just got off the ship yesterday. The ones for purchase ar $8 each. They are still giving the CC members the free ones at check in. They ALL have the plastic pouch. My DS even split his pouch while on the ship and traded it in for a new plastic:goodvibes

If you're a DVC member, you'll also get DVC lanyards either with the Captain's Log in your room or at the DVC Member meeting (or both). I actually used this one once I got it over the CC lanyard on our last cruise -the plastic zipper pouch was a little larger and easier to get things into and out of. The CC one was basically just big enough for the Key to the World card.

I think we ended up with 4 DVC lanyards and 3 CC lanyards by day 3 of our 7-night in January. And really, that was like 5 more lanyards than we ever ended up using!

captured,
I hope my previous post wasn't confusing. All the lanyards on the ship; for CC members, the ones they sell, and for DVC members (as per owensamo ;)) already have the pouch.

I was answering DisneyCruiser's question about what we do when we use CM ID lanyards (that don't come with a pouch)

Of course when you start customizing and buying individual components here and there... the price generally goes up. :rolleyes1

Looks like Disney is selling zippered pouches now.
I'm certain my price going up comment would apply to them though and they appear to better suited to pin trading lanyards (which some people use onboard)

I know lots of online stores sell ID lanyards and I'm sure most of them have zip pouches available.
Here's one example:

http://www.idville.com/SubCatView.aspx?cat1=111&cat2=395&cat3=222

I've never purchased anything here and did not research prices or anything though, just ran across them as an example.

Again, sorry if my other post was confusing. :o

Thanks cats mom for clearing that up for me! Thanks for the link as well.

What I did was to go to the Disney Store and buy the Pin Starter lanyard which came with the lanyard and two pins. My kids then traded the pins with the crew members and started a collection with their souvenir money. Those same lanyards on the ship were $19.95. In the store -- I paid $8.50.
