I was considering getting a 50mm 1.4 for my DD's tumbling and cheerleading. Kyle mentioned the 28-70 2.8 Sigma and now Wenrob mentioned the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8. Having zoom in the gym would be better than a fixed lens and I do already have a 50 1.8.
Does anyone have any experience with either lens shooting indoor sports? No flash?
A few differences I've noticed in the specs on both the Sigma and Tamron- the Tamron uses 67mm filters, the Sigma uses 87mm! The Tamron is lighter by about 8 oz. The Tamron is also less expensive. I've read reviews on both and it seems the owners of both like them.
To buy new-Sigma- $435, Tamron $349- Adorama has used ones of both.
Thanks again:)

Susan-I am hoping to add the Sigma 28-70 f2.8 as soon as my budget will allow such a purchase, or at least by the next cheerleading season. I have looked at both, but I am leaning towards the Sigma.

B&H has the Sigma for $369 or did anyway. I joked in my post that I went w/what was most popular but there were several mentions that the Sigma didn't hit it's sharpness peak until around f11 and mentions that the Tamron hit it around f4. That's what did it for me. It was mentioned that the Tamron is slow to focus but so far I haven't noticed that. However I've never had a very fast lens so it may be slow but fast to me if that makes sense. I took a bunch of shots without the flash in my house which is pretty dim and the pics were pretty good as far as sharpness goes.

edited: The Sigma is $341 at B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/352405-REG/Sigma_549306_28_70mm_f_2_8_EX_DG.html

You are right- I looked it up again- $341! Wow- I could have sworn I was looking at the Sigma for $435 this a.m. at B&H! I even went to Ritz in town- they didn't have any in stock but had it in the catalog for $499 and could order me one and I said to myself- $65 more than I can get online, hmmm. I must be losing it! :lmao: I also THOUGHT I read that the Sigma used 87mm filters. :confused3 According to B&H it uses 67mm.
Wenrob- would you mind posting some of your lowlight shots?

Update- I was looking at the 24-70 2.8 for $435

Here you go, I didn't do anything to them but convert to jpg.

My house has vaulted ceilings that just suck up all the light and minimal lighting. Pretty dim. The shades were closed when I took these but eldest DD had slightly more light in the kitchen.

I have had this lens a couple of years and been very happy with it. Works well in gym with no flash. Had very few issues with lens not focusing with lots of action.
