Sigh... Remy... Is it really worth it?

I know these threads result in "it's all relative" but I want to talk about Remy...

Wife and I just did the Remy Brunch with Champagne pairing and both came away very underwhelmed.

The experience, with tip, was over $200 and both of us would have rather bought 3 or 4 bottles of Moet Ice or Tattinger to enjoy at Meridian.

What am I missing?

We got:

- The equivalent of about 1..5 - 2 glasses of champagne each.

- A sliver of ham.

- A small appetizer - heirloom tomato tarte.

- A small lobster/mayo/caviar dish (wife hated it - too creamy). I asked and the caviar was american, farmed in Florida.

- A chicken dish.

- Hazelnut dessert.

- Coffee (which was really good)

yes, service was good and food was nicely presented... but $200?!

I knew going into it that it would be about that much and had high expectations. I've eaten better food, with same service, and more wine for much less.

I dunno, just curious is others see a value in remy?

DH and I had dinner at Remy, without drinking alcohol. It was enjoyable, but pricey! I just thought of it as a shore-away-from-shore excursion -- something different to try. Not something we want to do every cruise, but it was a fun change of pace.

I don't have a sophisticated taste, so Remy would be a waste for us, but I am certainly glad this option exists for those who want to enjoy it.

We love Remy dinner and have had it twice now. I can't say what we walked away spending as we spent quiet a bit on extras due to our engagement. The first time we had no extras beyond the initial up charge and found it completely worth it.

How much is the champaign brunch if it cost you 200?! For dinner we do the up charge and then tip. Not 100% sure what we tip as my fiance handles that portion but I know it is somewhere between 30 and 40 so that is 180 or 190 for an entire dinner. That is about average for us on land for date night so we found it worth it.

brunch with champagne was $85.00pp. $55 for brunch and $30 upcharge for champagne.

I admit, I was not fully aware of the price when I booked it. I was thinking it would be comparable to Palo which at $30pp is a great value and experience.

I have no problem spending $200 on a nice meal and do on occasion but it usually involves awesome entrees, apps, salads, sides, and at least one FULL bottle of wine.

We've had Remy dinner and found it to be... the best meal we've ever had. In comparison, we find Palo to be "good" but not outstanding. So... to us is was worth the investment.

For me anyway I would not consider brunch/lunch at Palo or Remy.

But a full dinner--yes. We do both each trip.

I went to Remy in September 2013 and enjoyed the experience. It was $75/pp + a corkage fee because we brought our own wine. I thought the experience was fantastic, the food was really good but I wouldn't do it again unless I got 10 courses of the cheese cart. Mmmm, the cheese cart!

Dinner at Remy is definitely worth it, brunch not so much. We much prefer Palo's brunch to Remy's. But for a top shelf dinner Remy is hard to beat.

I've done Remy for brunch once. It is no where near as good as their dinner or even Palo's brunch. It's a way trimmed down version of dinner, but you don't get to pick your plates. It not something I would do again. Remy dinner I would do every cruise. Don't get the wine pairing though, it's not worth it.

We really enjoyed the brunch at Remy and the Champagne pairings. Keep in mind that those three bottles they serve are all roughly $60 each at Total Wine. I know because we bought all three after coming back from the cruise. With the usual DCL markup, that means they'd go for $20+ per glass. So 1.5-2 glasses for $30 is not out of line.

As for the the food, we thought it was a pretty good deal, if compared to very fancy French fine dining restaurants. A similar brunch at either of the executive chefs' restaurants would be significantly more than $55 for those courses.

So whether it's "worth it" or not is highly subjective. Like a lot of luxury goods, it's really hard to justify on any kind of rational basis. It's unique. I thought all of the dishes were great, and some were amazing. We would do it again, but I can absolutely imagine others might not, and there is nothing wrong with that, and nothing wrong with them for feeling that way.

A comparable meal to that on land with the champagne would be more. It really is up to you, we love Remy, not everyone does.

I was underwhelmed by Remy brunch also. I enjoyed dinner a LOT more, and felt that dinner was also much better value for money.

We love the Remy brunch & always try to schedule when we cruise with DCL & feel it's worth the up-charge. I totally agree with dumnsil; as noted above ""worth it" or not is highly subjective" & I understand it may not be everyone's cup of tea. We also do the Champagne pairing & see that as the "Cherry on Top of the Sundae". Cheers :drinking:

Was the ham good?

sure. It was Pata Negra, which I like b/c it seems less fatty than prosciutto
It seems less fatty because of how thin they slice it. In reality it is very fatty, which is what gives it the flavor.

Could you have more if you wanted?
No, this is just something they give you when you first enter the wine room and they tell you about the experience you are going to have.

We went to Remy for the first time at the end of Oct. I do not have sophisticated tastes, but DH is a bit of a foodie. I did not enjoy it at all, and DH only marginally. We spent the $180 plus tip, then went back to our room to order room service. The actual service in Remy was amazing and the restaurant was beautiful, we just weren't fans of the food. I ordered the French side and he ordered the American side so we were both able to try both menus.
