Hi there!!

reading through several threads, keep seeing notes that people have stomach bugs, viruses etc whilst there.

Silly question, but has anyone else had stomach bugs whilst there? the first 3-4 times DFi and I went we were fine, but on returning in 2002 and 2004 with DD, All 3 of us have sickness either 2nd/3rd/4th day there. With me being sick again towards the end of trip 2004.....does this happen to anyone else? we dont drink tap water, and to be honest we dont go crazy on food as I always find I really want whats on the menu, but when it arrives I can only eat a small amount..could it be jet-lag?

Anyone have any ideas????????

Manythanks

Can't say I have experienced any stomach problems during any of my trips other than it not being large enough to hold all the food I want to eat at the buffet meals :rotfl:

I also didn't think there was a problem drinking the tap water in the US :confused3 I usually drink gallons of it :drinking1

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of 'bugs' were brought on by too much sun and not keeping hydrated. I think that is what happened to my hubby on our recent trip :)

i usedto get sick a few days in, i didnt drink the water, but then realised i was eating salad (washed in the water ) and having ice in drinks alsofrom tap water. I cut both out and have been fine on the rest of my trips

That would make sense about ice cubes!! Its weird how it never bothered us B4, but all get sick now!! IUn 2002 I took a weird dizzy feeling on the flight over and was sick, OK for a few days then sick again...On a flight to washington DC via Newark early 2005 I got the same thing again!! so putting it down to a few things

1. Water
2. Travel sickness
3. Jetlag
4. Being a complete and utter lunatic!!! :crazy2:

Thanks guys!

The water is fine to drink - we drink it all the time. With the greatest of respect, I think a lot of people really overeat in America - the portions are vast, far more than we're used to, and so much fatty food as well which is bound to cause a tummy upset if one is not used to it.

The first time we went we over ate - there was so much to take - and got a bit of an upset but we now find the heat and humidity actually curb our apetites and we're fine.

By the way - I'm not suggesting this about you or anyone in particular just in general.

As I mentioned in the first thread, we tend not to eat a lot as, I am inclined to agree with you, your appetite is curbed, due to the heat. I drink on average 5-6 bottles of water a day.

I've became so stressed about "getting" sick that I feel I take every precaution, not trudging around the parks in the heat, drink plenty water etc, - I think I've just gone mad!!!

I know the water is OK to drink, I just hate the smell of it!

Being cooped up in the plane going out there can't help either. It only takes 1 person on that plane with a cold and you could potentially end up with 300+ people having sniffles in the 1st few days on their hols!

I've had a couple of stomach problems out there but then I have digestive problems so anything and everything makes me ill! The change from "normal" food here to the fatty/sugary stuff we eat in Florida doesn't do me much good so I have to transfer gradually and drink lots of water.

I have been lucky and never been ill in all our trips to Fla. I do drink the water straight from the tap and also have ice cubes though. I certainly never thought thtere was a probelm with tap water which seems to be echoed by a few poeple above.?

DH has to be very careful about eating red meat as we rarely ever have it at home and sometimes he has found if he has say red meat 2 days in a row it canb really make him unwell. So he rations it out now ;)

Maybe you have just been unlucky? Fingers crossed for you for next time :)

Thanks Queenie!!

I think I'm just hyping it up for myself, I tell myself so many times "Ill be fine, I'll be fine" that I'm probably making it happen.

Precautiuons for this year are,
no alcohol day before travel - might be difficult as its the day after my wedding ! :rotfl:

Take travel sickness tablets.
Do NOT have french toasts pancakes and syrup my first morning :rotfl2:
Drink plenty of water as usual!

Thanks again!

I'm just like that. We don't eat red meat at all at home and to be honest don't eat much meat anyway. But in Florida where they aren't the best at catering for veggies I eat pork, turkey and chicken - if I eat it too often it will play havoc with my inners. So I try and avoid it as much as possible and stick to salads etc which for me are just right in the heat.

Can't say I have ever experiened being sick whilst in Florida. I try and drink as much water on the plane as I can. We always get a car and I usually drive from the airport, so having an alcoholic drink is out of the question.

We find that the heat does curb our appetites and usually only have two meals a day. That being said we do stuff our faces at those two meals. We are not big snackers and much prefer to take time out and eat in a nice air conditioned restaurant.

When we went in 2000, we took one of my friends. She stuffed her face from morning to night and on the third day was sooooo ill. She stayed in her bed for the next two days and that did the trick.

We eat sensibly - i.e. dealign with US potions by having 2 meals and snacks rather than 3 meals, we don't go mad on sweet stuff and at Disney prices don't overdo the alcohol BUT

on our trip last Easter we flew out on Sunday, I woke up feeling weird Tuesday and was sick by the time we got to MK (so my CP breakfast was wasted). Next day I was OK -ish, not enough for TOT but enough to enjoy a lunch at Brown Derby by 12.00 ;) . Thursday DS(5) got sick as we parked at Premium Outlets (I put it down to a mixture of Strawberry YOP and not being a good traveller - until we got back to the hotel and he threw up left right and centre!). So he and I missed Fantasmic. Next morning he was much better and we did AK - it was a coolish day and he was a bit quiet, and glad of the buggy, but perked up enough to eat well at RFC. Then everyone was fine until the next Tuesday - we spent the day at KSC< and in the middle of the night DH (who is rarely ill) started throwing up. He managed to get out by lunchtime through sheer willpower, but was not operating on all cylinders.

No idea what caused it, just make sure you take Imodium with you as once the sickness is nearing the end...well, you'll be glad of the Imodium once you want to go out.

Yeah thats the same as us!!! DFi is NEVER sick here!!

As I mentioned again earlier in this thread - dont eat a lot, as portions are too big, never have breakfast lunch and dinner, drink loads of water, stay out the sun in middle day etc. DFi says "Maybe were allergic to Disney" :scared1: - Shut up - dont be so stupid!!! :faint:

people often catch a 'bug' when they're traveling.....
they're often exhausted from time zone changes and going nonstop morning/noon/night so their immunity is down...
add to that the introduction of strains of bugs they're not used to and the result is a bout of some illness or other....

it's very common....when traveling and also when people go on relocation...
those of us who relocate a lot refer to it as 'relocationitis".....during the first year of relocation many people are sick every other week, until they get used to the local bugs....

I always carry a couple of sachets of anti-bacterial wipes with me. If you think of how many places your hands touch in the course of one day, and the number of germs on there, it is quite scary. Especially with three young children, I find I am wiping their hands every couple of hours - it's easier than finding a restroom each time and washing with soap/water. I also give the resort room a quick wipe down (!) as well, to try and ensure it is germ-free - especially things like the remote control and sliding door. A little over-cautious? perhaps, but it is fine for me!

that's the reason i really hate staying in hotels....or rather, staying away from home....i love to travel but always get all creeped out by the hotel room....and that's even though we stay in super deluxe hotels with impeccable sanitation...but all the cleaning in the world can't really do away with all the creepy yucky microscopic things that find their way onto carpets, furniture, beds, etc etc..
ugh.....double yuck....but there's no travel without staying away from home, so i do my best to keep it out of my mind...otherwise i'd get sick just thinking about it...

Ditto, Beth - I am exactly the same. I try my best to clean everything over, but like you say, it's difficult being away from home and sleeping in a bed you know hundred's of other people have also slept in. :scared: I too just have to try and keep it out of my mind.
