Sick kitty, any advice?

Please do not allow anyone to make you feel bad about not taking your kitty to the vet last night. I know you want your kitty to feel better and come through this in the best shape she can.

But I fully believe you made the best decision in not getting your family out in bad weather. I would never have taken my son out in bad weather or late at night in our rural area in order to take one of our pets. This would be different if family lived near us. We don't have snow issues down here but definitely bad weather, in respects to tornadoes which were all over the last two days down here. I love my pets and farm animals but I would not endanger my child in order to take one to an emergency vet in bad weather or late at night.

I hope all goes well this morning for both you and your kitty.

Thank you Dinseywalle and everyone else for supporting me through this. I realize the snow had just started but I also didnt want to be stranded and not be able to get home had I made it to the emergency clinic.

Kitty made it through the night. He vomited several times and I was up and down with him through the night. He is sitting on the chair now and I am just waiting for the vet to open. Its been such a tough night I am praying for good news at the vet. Thanks again for all the encouragement last night its nice to have that when you are battling these things on your own. I really appreciate it.

You made the right choice. I think alot of people don't realize how hazards snow storms can be... People die in them! I live I'm the south now and we see snow one day a year tops but I grew up in Minnesota and no way would I go out at night in a snow storm to drive 2.5 hours with my children for an animal. Maybe I'm cold hearted but the safety of the family comes first. Black ice under one curve and the car could roll mom could hit her head and the kids are strapped in their car seats... Then who is calling 911 on a road that is deserted due to location and the snow storm. I hope kitty is ok!

As much as I love my cats, I would not have risked the drive either. Even though it had just started snowing, we all know how much snow can accumulate in more than 5 hours(2.5 hours there, 2.5 hours back and then however long you would have been in the clinic). That would have been a dangerous drive back with 2 kids, especially in darkness.

I have taken one of my cats to the vet ER twice,so I don't mind spending the money or the drive if I think it will save my cat, but I wouldn't risk my or my son's life to make it there.

imho, you made the right decision to wait. a long drive on a rural road, at night and in a snowstorm could easily have meant injuries, or worse, to you, your children, AND furbaby. it doesn't make any sense to put the cat in an even more dire situation, let alone endangering everyone else on top of that

Awe poor baby. Hope your kitty is alright. I would search the house high and low and look for the source of the ribbon. Cats love strings and ribbons but it can be very dangerous to them. Maybe something one of the kids has in their room. Check under the bed too. Believe me the cat will try to eat more of it. So please search the house ASAP. The cat does not realize that he got sick from eating this ribbon he only knows that he enjoyed eating it and will go back to eating it.
I found our cat eating the ribbon we put on our luggage handle. thankfully the ribbon was just a few short pieces and I caught him eating it so I quickly cut it off and threw it away. But he still went back to the luggage looking for the ribbon.

You did exactly what I would have done if there was snow forecast and it was a long drive. I would have stayed home and watched the cat. Especially if it was not panting nor moaning/crying. I would not put myself nor the kids in danger when it seemed like I could wait til morning. It was not an ideal situation but you weighed the pros and cons and did the right thing.

I stand by my opinion 100+% and I think you made the right call by not endangering the lives and well being of your children. Please let us know how the kitty is doing when you get a chance.

Thank you guys for all your support and getting me through the night last night. We went to the vet first thing this morning and the x ray did not show any more blockage or intestenial bunching, however his intestines are very swollen and sore and he has a fever. They said since they don't see a foreign object no surgery at this time.
The vet just called and said they have re-hydrated him and he is a little perkier although still has a fever. She said now that he is stable, tomorrow they will do an ultrasound try to determine if his intestines are perforated, which I think will be bad news but I will go from there.
Its breaking my heart but I know he is in good hands and DD has a little time to absorb what is going on and what may happen. Thanks again for all your support and concern.

I have a cat that eats rubber bands and earbud wires. We know to keep them put up but I still will find them once in a while where she is sure to find them. The other 2 cats don't seem to eat anything unusual thank goodness. The dog eats everything he can.

I hope everything turns out fine and he heals on his own.My sister's cat would even try to eat the blind cords. The only weird thing any of mine try to eat is pistachio shells. DS17 loves pistachios and she always manages to find a stray shell. She then, of course, throws it up. I wish her brain was evolved enough to make the connection

I love my animals dearly, but there is NO way in Hades I would risk my daughters lives if they were sick. I can't imagine anyone with children not understanding that! OP you did the right thing. Hope kitty gets well!

PLEASE PLEASE now that kitty is out of the house and you have calmed down a bit please take my advise and search the house for where the ribbon could have come from. Lord knows you don't want a repeat of this situation! Please keep us informed!
