Shrinking Candy

Discovered this when my wife opened the first bag of Halloween candy on about Oct. 1. The Reese's cups in the assortment bought at Target were the mini size and not a single regular size cup. I took upon myself to find a bag that had the previous sized candies for our first Halloween in the new house.

I mean they have sizes written in the bag.. mini, fun size, reg and king and even super king now. Mini are half the size of fun size. And fun size is the reg trick or treat option around here.

I've read about shrinkflation and seen it here and there but now I'm seeing it more often. I bought Chips A Hoy cookies for my daughters school lunches. I haven't bought them in years but they were BOGO. The size of the cookie was not much bigger than the size of a silver half dollar. My kitchen was under construction and we went to Burger King and the cheeseburger was the size of a slider. Get less, pay more.

You've gotta wonder though, how small can they shrink things. Is a Reese's Peanut Butter cup at some point going to be the size of your pinky fingernail? Ice cream used to be two quarts and went down to 1.75 quarts a while ago. Now I see it advertised as 48oz, which is really just 1.5 quarts. The 48 being REAL BIG, making you think you are somehow getting more.

The problem is that when they change the size of Reese's Peanut Butter cups/eggs/pumpkins, it changes the flavor dynamic. Usually not in a good way.

The mini sized bars given out at Halloween have always been small. The number of pieces in a bag might have gone down so they could keep the price the same. If they kept the quantity in the bag the same and then raised the price, likely people would complain about that too.

The size of the mini and fun size candy have shrunk. Not just the amount in a bag.

Man, I hate "Fun Size" - there's nothing FUN about that! 🤣
I can't take sweet as much in my old age, so a fun size candy bar is usually enough for me. I got a full size Milky Way a couple years ago and I couldn't eat the whole thing at once. Give me some good quality dark chocolates, though, and I can go to town on those.

We buy fun size candy all year long for the kids lunches and as a small treat. Nothing has shrunk in the last couple years.

I just kinda mean from a kid's perspective when trick-or-treating. Mini's are even worse, and they seem more common now.
