We were shown a 3 minute clip of a rough cut of Shrek 4-D today at an employee rally. From what I saw, this is sure to a big hit. It recaptures the brillance of the original film, brings in some of its own material and will have tons of neat 3-D effects. It actually almost made me excited about UO again!

When do they plan on it being open? I would LOVE to see this in May - but I'm hearing summer.

What about Jimmy Neutron? Will it be open by 5/27?

I hope we get to "visit" you then! We went to Mythos for dessert on our last trip - didn't have time for more! I would love to eat there this year. Do you guys do dinner any later then when the park is open? I think it closes at 7:00 when we're there.

I have to ask: Why do they call it 4-d?

Probably because that's what Disney/MGM calls MuppetVision.

;)

They call it 4-D because of the sensory portion of the 3-D movie. There will be ORG vision associated with the film.

isn't that Jim Henson's Muppet Vision 3D?

I've seen it called 4D, in the actual movie, I believe

Robert-that's OGRE vision...

and it's muppet 3-d, says so in the film too...

Shrek 4-D.

I think they say "4-D" on the park map or something else advertising it. Maybe about "It's Tough to Be a Bug" or one of the others - but I've seen that used also.

I too would love to know when Shrek is due to open. We are going early June and I will be gutted if I miss it (it's a long way to have to go back but I will do it if I have to!):)

I heard June, but Notatourist or SecondCook might know better.

Didn't the article say that the hollywood and orlando versions would both open at the same time for memorial day weekend?

Bob Gault said June 30 at a all salaried meeting earlier this year.

this was in the LA daily news...somebody posted it a while back

UNIVERSAL CITY -- Universal Studios announced plans Wednesday to open a new theme park attraction this summer in all three of its parks, reuniting the three stars of the animated hit "Shrek" long before the planned 2004 sequel.

Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz will reprise their "Shrek" voice-over roles as part of "Shrek 4-D," a multisensory and multimedia continuation of the "Shrek" fairy tale that features 15 minutes of all-new 3-D animation. It will bridge the storyline from the first "Shrek" film with the upcoming sequel from DreamWorks Pictures.

"This will be our single-biggest attraction launch," said Don Skeoch, Universal Studios Hollywood senior vice president of marketing and retail. "It's taking a great property like 'Shrek' and making it come alive as a theater event with state-of-the-art technology that has never been seen."

The new attraction will open just before Memorial Day at Universal theme parks in Universal City, Orlando, Fla., and Osaka, Japan, and will be able to accommodate 1,200 guests per hour. It marks the first time all three parks have opened a new attraction simultaneously.

Tourism has suffered a major hit since the 9-11 terrorist attacks, and the possible war with Iraq has cast a pall over future international travel. So "Shrek 4-D" comes at a time when Southern California theme parks are vying for the drive market that includes visitors from Northern California, San Diego and neighboring states like Arizona and Nevada.

"Any time you have a theme park with a major new attraction, that's good news," said Jack Kyser, chief economist for the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. "What you are seeing is a little more optimism in the theme park industry in Southern California, where we can tap into a larger drive market."

The attraction will be housed in a castle-like building, and guests will be given a pair of "OgreVision" glasses to wear as the screen and the theater come alive with sensory elements.

Myers is the voice of the title character, a swamp-dwelling ogre, and Murphy voices his chatterbox companion, Donkey. Shrek's bride, Princess Fiona, is voiced by Diaz. The first film won the first Academy Award for best animated picture, earning $267.6 million at the U.S. box office. It has also been a smash on home video.

The new theme park attraction features a tale that begins as Shrek, Princess Fiona and Donkey set off for a honeymoon but are faced with trouble in the form of the ghost of Lord Farquaad, voiced by John Lithgow in the films and in the new attraction. The trio is transported into an adventure featuring such fast-paced sequences as an aerial dogfight between fire-breathing dragons and a steep plunge down a 300-foot waterfall.

"Shrek 4-D" marks the first animation to be created for a theme park by PDI, the animators of "Shrek," as well as the earlier computer animated hit "Antz." The addition of three-dimensional depth to the animation and the creation of in-theater effects are by attraction designers at Universal Creative.

To those that have heard Muppetvision referred to as Muppetvision 4D, you're correct...they have (and I'm not going to say they still do, because I haven't looked recently) had on park maps, and on the hot air balloon outside of the attraction, had Muppetvision 3D, and then they crossed out the 3D and changed it to 4D. This has been for quite awhile now...and like I said, I can't guarantee it's still that way.

Thanks for the article Damo - I hope they're sticking to that time schedule !

And thanks for posting MsDisney - I KNEW I'd seen that somewhere!

Noooo problem! :)

Couldn't have people thinking they were nuts!

I started second guessing myself! LOL

Now that I think about it, I believe it's on the tip board too...it's got the 3D logo scratched out and has 4D written to the side of it.
I'll have to notice next time I'm there...

Thanks for the verification, Ms.Dis...

I remember explaining it to my "way too literal" son and it was a chore to explain why the Muppets were in 4D and not 3D!

Doesn't 4 D mean 3 D (using the 3D glasses) plus live action?
