Should We Anticipate War-Related Changes or Omissions at the Parks?

We are scheduled to be at US/IOA this weekend and of course
I've been back and forth trying to decide if we should stiil go.
DH has no qualms whatsoever--I wish I could be more like him.

Anyway, I've been listening to ESPN radio today and MLB is
deciding whether or not the A's and the Mariners will be going to
Japan to open the baseball season. There is talk of postponing
the NCAA Tournament. In light of these types of decisions to be
made, I wondered if for example, the Mardi Gras Parade would
be held at US. Even if we decide to make the trip, it doesn't seem
quite right to be attending a "party" like Mardi Gras when we're at war. Does anyone think (or know) if certain extras might be cut out?

Why shouldn't you? I'm sorry if what I'm about to say sounds like a personal attack - I don't mean it against you personally at all - but I think the people in this country need to get a grip! I've got news for everyone - the world did not stop during WW I, WW II, Korea or Vietnam. It seems to me the people that WEREN'T actually fighting the wars were doing the best they could to carry on and when the soldiers get a break - they party like there's no tomorrow - and rightly so. The big news this week that the Oscars will go on - who cares? Unless those involved with the Oscars are called up to serve - why shouldn't they go on? Those of us that are at home need to go about our business and keep this country going so that it's WORTH fighting for. We don't need to go into mourning and overdramatize our non-roles. Support our troops, pray if you're a praying person and go about your life like normal.

Debbie, I agree with you. The more that we change our plans and habits the more that the enemies and terrorists have won. I felt this way after 9/11 and lived through it daily when the DC snipers were doing their thing. Let me tell you, it was hard going shopping and getting gas for a few weeks last fall, but we had to carry on. We were careful and cautious, but I wasn't about to let someone have such control over me!

I can see attendance dropping at Disney because most of their visitors are from out of town.

But USF/SWF/BGT draw alot of locals. There's no reason for them to change.

If Disney was smart, they'd slash season passes for locals, but Eisner would never do that. I guess that's why I haven't been there in a few years. Sometimes they have deals for Florida residents, but I haven't even heard of that lately.

But I am driving up to USF on March 31 and I have no plans to change my trip.

robvia: I think the folks over at Disney must be groaning over the recent news reports that the government is restricting flights over WDW. It's like they're saying "Watch out! The terrorists want to attack the Magic Kingdom!"

And given the skittishness of a lot of Americans, I can't help but believe that will cut into Disney's attendance. Could be a good time to avoid the crowds at WDW.

OTOH, maybe now that Disney's getting government protection, Osama will blow up Gatorland.

Disney asked for the no fly overs its properties. If the FAA did it they would have included other large theme parks like Universal.

Disney is much more of an American Icon than Universal...it is such a HUGE destination for people from all over the world, and what could be more American than Mickey Mouse?

So, it makes sense to me that the FAA would specify WDW and DL, but not Universal, or other theme parks.

I'm looking to fly up to Atlanta/Virgina to visit the thrill parks the weekend of April 11th, but can't book the plane rides yet because I don't know if the schedules will stick.
I wanna fly, but I'm not gonna plunk down my money if flights are cancelled and they make me fly at weird times. So imagine what international travelers are going thru.

The airlines need to come out with their revised schedules fast.

And yes, I agree, it's a great time to visit the parks.

Interesting. I never heard that (not that that proves anything!).

What's your source on this? The CNN report linked by UKDeb makes no mention of any Disney request. In fact, it says that Disney is annoyed by the FAA action.

I also heard this, on MSNBC. In fact, it was a no-fly over both Disneyland and Disneyworld. It got my attention because my son said "look, mom, Disney World is on tv", and it showed a few seconds worth of the Magic Kingdom. And then it went on with the story abou the no-fly.

It was government ordered. The city of Chicago asked for no fly-over status as well and was told "No" by the F.A.A. BTW there is one over USF as well.

It was on the channel 7 news here in Orlando. They were saying that Disney is so paranoid that they requested this for all there parks DW, DL and CA.

Same thing for the airlines. The executives (suits) are predicting gloom and doom. They're predicting record losses and all kinds of bad things.

Yet I want to fly for spring break. I'm going to book my Atl/Ric flights on Monday. I'm not changing plans.

The executives are scaring people away. Duh.
