Should I tip the caterer?

We're having a retirement party for my dad this Sunday and have hired a caterer. When I write the check, should I include a tip? I have no idea why this thought crossed my mind, but I certainly don't want to offend him if it's the "thing" to do. He's done several events for our church and school before and I know he will do a fantastic job.

I occasionally work for a caterer, so he's my take on this.

The price that our customers are quoted do not include a tip, as it shouldn't. Some of our customers pay by check, but give each of the servers a cash tip or give the caterer the tip with the intention that he will split the tip with us.

Catering is not easy work, there is a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes that you might not be aware of and a tip is VERY much appreciated.

As a former catering manager I would like to echo Duke on tips not being included in the price. And there is a ton of stuff going on behind the scenes, those tips are greatly appreciated.
I hate to say that occasionally we did not get our tips that were included in the check. During the walk thru for the event the customers usually asked about how to handle tips either by check and we split it, or by cash, I would suggest cash for the workers. Besides, it's a really good way to take a minute and talk to each worker as you hand them out at the end of the event. It puts a personal touch to the function and makes the workers feel good to know you appreciated all their efforts.

Hope the party is a success!

We have had a caterer several times before. When we tried to tip the bar tenders and wait staff, the manager said no, that it would be inappropriate. I still think I should have, but this particular organization aparently does not allow it.
